She Votes: How U.S. Women Won Suffrage, and What Happened Next | Bridget Quinn
13 posts | 1 to read
She Votes is an intersectional story of the women who won suffrage, and those who have continued to raise their voices for equality ever since. From the first female Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation to the first woman to wear pants on the Senate floor, author Bridget Quinn shines a spotlight on the women who broke down barriers. This book also honors the 100th anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment with illustrations by 100 women artists. A colorful, intersectional account of the struggle for women's rights in the United States Features heart-pounding scenes and keenly observed portraits Includes dynamic women from Elizabeth Cady Stanton to Audre Lorde She Votes is a refreshing and illuminating book for feminists of all kinds. Each artist brings a unique perspective; together, they embody the multiplicity of women in the United States. From the pen of rockstar author and historian Bridget Quinn, this book tells the story of women's suffrage. Perfect for feminists of all ages and genders who want to learn more about the 19th amendment and the journey to equal representation You'll love this book if you love books like Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg by Irin Carmon and Shana Knizhnik; Rad American Women A-Z: Rebels, Trailblazers, and Visionaries who Shaped Our History . . . and Our Future! by Kate Schatz and Miriam Klein Stahl; and Why I March: Images from The Women's March Around the World by Abrams Books.

#ForeverNovember #Vote Your right to vote is valuable, over the years I believe there were more moves to disenfranchise voters than voter fraud. This poll tax slip is from Tennessee in 1900.$2.00 was a lot of money back then. From the folds I imagine this man kept it in his wallet, in case he was asked to prove he could vote and to keep it safe.

Texreader This is cool that you have this 4y
Leftcoastzen @Texreader I bought it from a stamp & paper dealer. There is something about physical evidence of history, I probably should have been an archivist.😃 4y
AmyG That‘s pretty neat. 4y

Leftcoastzen Should also mention saw a table that had wages circa 1901 .For average African American man laborers $140.00 per year. 4y
Buechersuechtling Is this still common, to have a tax voters need to pay❓I‘m confused … 4y
Leftcoastzen @Buechersuechtling The short version, to keep African Americans from voting ,states put in poll taxes and /or literacy tests etc . to prevent voting. Not to mention good old fashioned intimidation. 4y
Leftcoastzen @Buechersuechtling basically made illegal by 1965. 4y

Every time I sit down to write something about voting, it turns into a diatribe, and frankly I'm exhausted. To my American Littens, I hope you voted today. I hope things get better. I hope we can move toward justice and away from cruelty. I hope. #vote #ForeverNovember

OriginalCyn620 I hope so too. 4y
Buechersuechtling I hope, you don‘t think, this is supposed to be appropriation because it isn‘t. But, you know, I am from Europe (Germany) and I quite feel you because the whole day through I am running around feeling a slight nervousness and constantly checking on the news even though I know the slightest chance for a first rough result will be earliest when I get up tomorrow at 5 a.m. because of the time shift. So, I feel you and send stamina. 4y
Andrea313 @Buechersuechtling Thank you for this! I am sending stamina your way, too. I know that it's not just Americans who are upset and fatigued by the onslaught of attacks and diversions these past four years. I am nervous but trying to hope for a positive outcome, for my country and the global community. ✌️❤️ 4y
Andrea313 @KVanRead Thank you, and right back at you! ❤️ 4y

Saw this post from my favorite book store and thought it might interest this community.

Books Are Magic in BK will be raffling off 6 months of books to anyone who donates $5 to help restore voting rights in Florida. Check out the post on their Instagram for much more detail and information.

It sounded like this was a great intersection of interests for a lot of the people I interact with on here. If it doesn‘t interest you, just ignore 😁

Jilly6183 This is a great idea! I will definitely do this, thanks! 4y
JoeMo Thanks for sharing...it‘s cool that in addition to this raffle, they‘ll match donations to several different organizations if you email them a receipt. 4y
Annie1215 @JoeMo I didn‘t notice that! I‘m going to do that now. 4y
