I have a lot of book reviews to catch up on from the last few months. I listened to this in June or July & mostly hated it. It‘s 3 hours long, so I decided not to DNF it after the first 2, but then I wished I had. I know its been a popular book, but I found it full of cliches. And the author seemed a bit arrogant. He has a Scottish accent though.

This was between a pick and a so-so for me. There were a lot of great points that I took out of this, and it was a pretty quick audiobook - so I don‘t mind too much. I‘d give it 6.5/10 ⭐️

Sometimes you need a kick up the proverbials. Sometimes meh.

So, positives:I liked the first chapter (Are you willing to…?) & enjoyed the quotes from old philosophers. And agreed with him on expectations of how the world should be.

But the rest reminded me of my A-level stats teacher (9am Tuesdays, 9th floor…) who, when asked to explain anything, would repeat the same words but LOUDER. Does being yelled at to take action actually help?🤷🏻‍♀️

TrishB Not for me- I run the other way as it makes me more resistant. Probably why I never read self help books. 3y
rockpools @TrishB I used it to practice skim-reading. I need to get better at that 🤣. Honestly can‘t remember why I decided I ABSOLUTELY needed to read this yesterday! 3y
julesG Perfect exercise book then. 😁 3y

It was alright. Like a good pep talk from a Scottish friend but not a long term life changer. I took a few good things from it.

No bingo yet, but I have accomplished a few projects such as cleaning and organizing the kitchen and decluttering some items in there. To be fair I stay in my pjs most days since I don‘t work.

AkashaVampie Same here. I am always in pjs or something like pjs if I am home. 4y
ElizaMarie @AkashaVampie Ha I am in my PJs now! I should go to the grocery store (husband comes in town tomorrow but.. I can do it tomorrow before he comes (and clean) ... PJ day it will probably be! 4y
jb72 @AkashaVampie @ElizaMarie I rarely get dressed unless I am leaving the house. I figure why dirty more clothes?!?! 🤷🏼‍♀️ plus I‘m home and want to be comfortable. 4y
AkashaVampie @ElizaMarie I need to get back into pjs. I got dressed becuz my son was going to have a therapist come today but he woke up with a slight fever (99) and dont wanna risk her getting sick or anyone else sick. So might be just a lounging day for me. 4y
AkashaVampie @jb72 totally agree. Need to be comfy. I think that's y I like staying home so much.... being in my own element and comfy. 4y

At only 3hrs this book went super fast. The narration was hard to get used to because of his Scottish accent and took me longer to process what he was saying. Also alot of the chapters were repetitive or fluff. Not what I was expecting although each chapter had a useful nugget of something.

5⭐️ #LitsyAtoZ #B

Thanks for the tag @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 🥰🤗

1. Ontario, Canada

2. Tagged book is by far the most important book I‘ve read/listened to in 2020. I‘m not a re-reader, but I will 💯with this one!

3. Depends on format. A good writer & story can persuade me to buy/borrow a chunkster, over 400 pages, but for the most part I prefer e-books for those.

4. @Susan Ornelas @GHABI4ROSES

GHABI4ROSES 1. South Bay of Los Angeles, CA, USA; 2. Game of Thrones; 3. 400 pages; 4. @Andrew65 & @Lesanne 4y

This is the first Audiobook that I've ever fully listened to. I enjoyed this one. It was interesting and quite a few things the author said resonated with me. I listened to this on the way to and from work and it gave me alot to think about and some things to apply to my own way of thinking. It was read by the author and I enjoyed his voice. There were lots of good quotes so I may need to get a paperback to highlight for future reference.

To anyone who has read this book already - does it get better? A friend gave me a copy of this book because she loved it so much. I am trying to read it to be polite - but I am finding this book rather tedious. To be fair -Self help is not a genre I particularly enjoy.

This book is alright. It‘s a quick read as far as self help books go. The book was a bit cliche for me. It mentions every cliche about positive thinking but proceeds to say it‘s different just by wording it different. In my opinion it is over hyped.

This is unlike any other "self-help" book I've read/listened to. He gets really tough with his audience, but it's tough love. He hones in on happiness being internal, while also focusing on your actions in comparison to your thoughts. Basically, you are bound to have negative thoughts. But ultimately, it's your actions that truly matter. Gary John Bishop really forced me to call myself out on my own nonsense.

RaimeyGallant Sounds inspiring. 5y

Onto the next audiobook! So far it's about how the kind of self-talk you use affects your life and goals. I'm definitely guilty of negative self-talk, so this is an interesting listen.

The author doesn't sugar coat anything, but each chapter essentially sounded the same and conveyed the same message. The book has very small rare bits of profoundness. It's written in a modern, no bullshit, "I just threw this together" tone.

It‘s a good motivational book, keeping the message straight and short. The downside is that it does not go deep into the real psychology behind dissatisfaction with life. Alternative recommendations could be the power of now, by Eckhart Tolle or breaking the habit of being yourself, by Joe Dispenza

Just okay. It didn‘t make foolish promises of positive thinking like You Are A Badass. And it wasn‘t as encouraging as The Brave Athlete. And it wasn‘t funny like any of Sarah Knight‘s books. It just was. And the reader wasn‘t a good fit.

Most of this is common sense, but a good refresher if you‘re already doing most of these things. Blunt, bold and in your face advice. Frankly I want to throw this book at half the people I know who whine about themselves every two seconds.

There is nothing here that is new, but it‘s laid out in a very clear way and with an engaging, no nonsense style. If you‘ve ever done yoga or meditation, you will probably already know that everyone has negative thoughts and those thoughts are meaningless. Action in spite of negative thought leads to real gains and improvements. That is the gist of this book - if you want to accomplish something, ignore your monkey-mind and just do it.

Unf*ck Yourself is the self help equivalent of a Starbucks Venti Macchiato with an extra shot of espresso. It is strong, refreshing, and will give you the jolt you need to get motivated and start taking action. Gary John Bishop doesn't sugar coat or coddle the reader. If you're easily offended this book isn't for you. However, if you're willing to make a change and don't mind the hard truths, go out and "Unf*ck Yourself".

Real talk about how your thoughts create your life. It‘s funny and attempting to be the kick in the butt you didn‘t know you needed. I found myself nodding a lot as I listened because I‘ve definitely heard some of this over the course of my life, including in cognitive behavioral therapy. The author is a life coach, and he reads it.
