Another Rincewind book for #OokBookClub, and this one also came up as my July #BookSpin! There was a bit more depth to this one—more going on than just the jokey bits, with some good commentary on the use of power, and the impact of a “revolution.”

TheAromaofBooks I just finished this one this past week as well! I liked but didn't love it. Which is kind of how I've felt about all the Discworld books I've read so far. One a month feels like the right pace for me lol 5mo
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks I feel like I got spoiled in having read Pratchett‘s Tiffany Aching books years ago—they‘re so good!! Rincewind is very “meh” to me. But I do want to read the rest of Pratchett, and once a month with the group works for me, too! 5mo
julesG @BarbaraJean I'm glad we're reading the Rincewind books first. Then they are out of the way. 😬 As for the pacing, I could easily read one Pratchett a week. But I'd need a longer break after a few months. 5mo

When the far away Agatean Empire requires a Great Wizard to fulfill a prophecy, Ankh-Morpork sends Rincewind.

Well. At least my least favorite is out of the way now. This one combines Rincewind, who I‘m pretty meh about, & Cohen who I immensely dislike. Combined w/ a repetitive Rincewind accidentally saves the world storyline, too many rape jokes from the Horde, & how funny the fantasy Asian culture is, this is his weakest work for me. 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑

julesG It's a Rincewind book. 😮‍💨 5mo

Pickpick

So, currently I am switching between Agatha Christie and Terry Pratchett audiobooks. I liked “Interesting times” even thiugh the quality of the audiobook was not the best one (it seems to be an older recording). But just imagining Rincewind fighting a whole army with the held of a bewitched armour he accidently stepped into made up for it. 🤣

Book 31

I first heard the curse "May you live in interesting times" when I was 8 or 9. As a kid, I didn't get it, interesting times didn't sound that bad, why is it a curse? As an adult living in the year 2020, I absolutely get why it's a curse and I am rather tired of interesting times.

Aa far as this book goes, it's cringey and borderline racist full of tropes and generalizations about Asian people and customs. It has not aged well.

MariaW But this is exactly what Terry did, he ridiculed the stereotypes and generalizations to that extreme extend that some of his charachters are most bizarre. 4y
AbbaZabba02 I see what you're saying and agree that's what he does, but in this particular book it doesn't come off as satire so much as it does just leaning into easy race centered "jokes" that would have probably made me chuckle when it came out, but 26 years later just make me wince and want to put the book down. 4y

It destroys me to So-So a Discworld book, and yes there were plenty of the usual genuinely funny and clever bits, but it was absolutely ruined by the setting which was composed of a mush of offensive Japanese and Chinese stereotypes.

And I think the moral was that raping looting barbarism is more straightforward and honest than hypocritical civilization? Or something?

I liked having Twoflower around again. And Mr Saveloy was good fun. Sigh.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk #DiscRead #SummerOfShort3 book 1. There was one particular #LitsyAfterDark joke that made me laugh out loud for quite some time. I have placed it behind the spoiler flag below for your optional enjoyment: (edited) 4y

I had great success with my original #SummerOfShort and #SummerOfShort2 Secret of the Ooze!

And now this weirdo school year has reached its end which means it‘s time once again to spend my days with my wonderful kiddos while working my way through as many books with less than 300 pages from my TBR as I can.

Welcome to #SummerOfShort3!

May you live in Interesting Times indeed, I‘m beginning to feel a bit like poor Rincewind as our realty goes a bit wonky, and bless his soul he really does manage to save the day, while stepping his foot into trouble every step of the way. I quite enjoyed seeing the barbarian horde in all its aging glory, along with Twoflower and the Luggage again.

Late #WeeklyForecast Mar 8 - 14, 2020 I‘m still struggling to get through the inaptly named Interesting Times & 50 Great Short Stories. I‘ll finish the Discworld book but the short stories are going back on the shelf for now. I haven‘t started Little Brother yet but I‘m hoping to this week. Artemis is OK but I don‘t love it the way I loved The Martian. I have some books in mind for my next read but doubt I‘ll start either of them this week.

Cinfhen Sometimes we need to scrap our plans and hit reset!!! I was SO DISAPPOINTED with 5y
TK-421 @Cinfhen I was excited when I first heard about Artemis but after seeing a lot of poor reviews, I wasn‘t sure if I wanted to read it. Anyway, I went in with lowered expectations so I‘m doing OK with it so far. I‘m just over halfway through. 5y

Oh, I wanted to love this one, but it's simply not happening. The characterization of the Aegean Empire is too casually racist, there's too much Horde for my tastes, and it lacks an emotional arc. And more Twoflower please!

julesG Okay. I'm going first. I would have loved to find out more about The Luggage's love life and how little luggages are made. 😁 Overall I thought that Rincewind was pretty much Rincewind, no big surprises in the story. I really liked the rumours about the barbarian invaders though; walking through walls and so on. 😂😂 5y
See All 16 Comments
Soubhiville I love the idea of baby luggages @julesG ! Maybe there‘s some fan fic out there somewhere. 🤣 5y
julesG @Soubhiville But The Luggage is an ass. He leaves his wife/girl and the little ones behind and follows Rincewind. That's not what I thought would happen. 5y
khooliha The things I liked best about this book were bits around the edges: Ridcully being nice to Rincewind, the little weather butterfly when it finally shows up and does little weather, Hex. The main plot is too white-saviour-y though! 5y
gossamerchild @khooliha yeah, some of his books age better than the others 😣. I feel like he was better at feminism than race. 5y
khooliha @gossamerchild That is absolutely the conclusion I'm coming to through this reread, which makes me nervous about revisiting Jingo. 5y
Gezemice @julesG I totally agree! More Luggage! lol. I have enjoyed the poking fun at Barbarian hero legends, too. Like they barely wore anything but it had to be all padded lol. 5y
Gezemice @gossamerchild @kooliha definitely better with feminism than race. There are some racial stereotypes. Overall though I think he was taking on totalitarianism rather than race. Men At Arms, Thud, and a later one, Snuff, all tackle racism head-on. Snuff is especially poignant, a departure for Pratchett, but one of my favorites for that reason. 5y
Gezemice Overall I enjoyed this one, Rincewind annoyed me less than before. He is kind pf growing on me. He did do some pretty heroic stuff and not always just because he found himself on the spot. The barbarians were hilarious. And the Red Army that was always so polite! And the description of a totaliatarian regime that kills independent thought was harking directly to my recent read Wild Swans, and how Maoist China policed thought completely. 5y
julesG @Gezemice Great points! I agree, I think the main idea was taking on totalitarianism. 5y
DrexEdit I liked it, with reservations. It was casually racist (while claiming not to be racist so TP knew he was skirting close to some sort of line) and conflated different Asian cultures as if they were the same thing. Still I enjoyed getting to know the Horde a bit better and TwoFlower came out of nowhere with some real backstory. Now I want more TwoFlower stories. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa May you live in Interesting Times indeed, I‘m beginning to feel a bit like poor Rincewind as our realty goes a bit wonky, and bless his soul he really does manage to save the day, while stepping his foot into trouble every step of the way. I quite enjoyed seeing the barbarian horde in all its aging glory, along with Twoflower and the Luggage again.
5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DrexEdit Yes, I agree about the racism part...because he blended a bunch of stuff together to make many of his “fictional” Disc-lands he seems to skirt a lot of borderline racist stuff that would never fly if set in our “world”...although to be fair, I‘m finding that a lot of early sci-fi fantasy has that issue....sadly. 5y
julesG @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Agree with you on the racism in early sci-fi. Different times, different mind-set. 5y

Two thoughts:
1) I can't believe, 250 pages later, I'm learning that Vetenari is the only person on the Disc who can recognize butterflies on the first pass
2) do Rincewind and Ridcully ever hang out more? Ridcully deciding to bring Rincewind back after 4 days is surprisingly sweet (especially since he would have left the Dean to rot)

Buh, I had COMPLETELY forgotten that this book pulls finding your compatriot's child attractive. Rincewind's heterosexuality feels -extra- perfunctory in this novel so far, so hopefully he keeps this to himself.

I‘m a mood reader so it‘s rare I make reading plans & actually follow through but I here‘s my #WeeklyForecast. Finish Interesting Times! I‘ve been reading 50 Great Stories here & there but tbh most of the stories have been NOT-so-great so I‘ll probably drop it for now. I borrowed The Unquiet Past & Little Brother from my library for my lunch & coffee break reads & might read some Tiffany Aching, another GMing book or Artemis if my hold comes in.

Cinfhen I‘ll be curious to hear your thoughts on Artemis ~ it really disappointed me 😖I had high expectations. 5y

I‘m waiting for my hubby to finish Jingo so I can continue my #DiscworldReread so I decided to read 1 of 8 Discworld books I haven‘t read yet. I‘m not a big fan of Rincewind. I‘m only 80 pgs in but so far it‘s not really interesting (haha). I‘ll keep on, though. I want to read all of Discworld so no bailing! And 1 book I actually finished last week. It was super short so more like a very short story and not a book!

Probably my favorite of the Rinsewind books, but I really just don't care for that character. Also, the book hasn't really aged well in our current age of hyper racial awareness. Over all, not so great.

I spent last night getting my outer appearance to match my inner feelings. It‘s so good to be back!

I also finished my reread of Interesting Times. It‘s a fun adventure in Discworld‘s version of China, with an army of rebels trying to overthrow the oppressive Empire. There are several tongue in cheek twists, and I laughed out loud in the salon. Overall, I find the Rincewind books weaker than some of the other themes, but still a lot of fun!
