Final #Scarathlon points total!
I was lucky to rack up a bunch of game points during the second half of the month and did finish a few more books, but not my best showing for this monthlong event.
Unfortunately, work and life just got in the way this month. My husband and I moved out of our rental (we‘ve been there 7 years) and into the townhome we just bought, and while that has been a huge time suck, it‘s been worth it.
#mischiefandmayhem
This was such a pointless book. There are glimpses of plots but it's mostly boring rambling of an annoying MC.
It's trying so hard to be atmospheric and confusing to create suspense and tension. All it does is make me wonder what I'm doing and why this book is so dumb.
There is an ending but by that point I'd stopped caring.
#mischiefandmayhem buddy read
A gorgeous cover and interesting premise got me intrigued, but overall this book was very disappointing. The FMC attends an elite girls prep school, returning after a year away dealing with mental health breakdown due to the traumatic death of her best friend/secret girlfriend. The dark academia aesthetic really failed for me, since despite numerous references to the FMC‘s intended thesis there‘s basically no magical explanation or studies. More >
My current points for the halfway check-in. I will calculate the #LittenListen readathon hours at the end of the month (along with bingos, etc.). I am almost done with the tagged book and am also currently reading The Running Grave and Emily Wilde‘s Encyclopedia of Faeries.

I came up with a list of 70 books with something in common with either A Lesson in Vegeance or Seven Years of Darkness.

A good read, set in a girl's school, it has witchcraft, female friendship, and secrets.
This was hella atmospheric!! It‘s dark and spooky, and there was sm gaslighting everywhere, it rly added to the plot (which tbh, is minimal) and overall feel of this book. It‘s short and sweet (not sweet, more like astringent), and it broaches topics of mental health and paranoia and family and relationships and…oof you just gotta give it a go!
Oh how I wanted so much more from this book! It was bland to me, all around. And I really couldn't get into the idea of one of the main characters being only 17 yet had lived a life of a woman in her 30s or 40s. Glad I read it just can't sing its praises.
Read this for a YA book club I joined and man did it disappoint. Between the inaccuracies of climbing Longs Peak to the rather slow and drawn out narrative to the fact I figured everything out before the halfway point, this is a book I will be unhauling #Scarathlon #TeamMonsterMash #31by31 #pointsathon #spookoween #booklyreadathon +256 pts (correction: 3376 pts)
Surprisingly, I slogged my way through this one, bailing but returning not once, but twice. Despite having a bunch of things I love - witchcraft, boarding school, gothic setting - I just found it a bit slow. I sympathized with Felicity (at first), and was intrigued by Ellis, but found I cared about neither. Still, I was curious enough to find out how it ended. Now I know! Not bad.

Early morning reading with a cat on my back 😌 📚❤️ 🐈 Slowly making my way through tagged book. It's great but the pace is a little slow which makes it easy to put down. I do keep picking it back up though!
It's been a hot minute since I posted a #weeklyforecast as I was sick last weekend and gone the weekend before!! The windowsill is still pretty full, especially considering there is only one week before August's books go up (!!!) but I actually have been reading quite a lot lately. I'm down to the final books in both the Bridgerton and Percy Jackson series, so hopefully both those series will get checked off soon. Three of these are 2022 books ⬇
Thirteen thousand feet above sea level, you can drown in air like water.
#firstlinefridays Started this this morning. Not sure I'm in the mood for fantasy, but it's a great opener so I'm giving it a try!
Just barely a pick. This is a pretty good addition to the Dark Academia genre - genuinely creepy and atmospheric. Having the protagonists be in High School rather than college worked against it, imo (I know, it's YA, but still!) & the last 1/3 dragged up to a somewhat rushed resolution.
I just can't resist Dark Academia - yet my cravings are never satisfied. I may have to venture deeper into horror to find that elusive something I'm looking for.
This was…not what I was expecting. I don‘t think the description on the book‘s jacket was accurate at all. Still, it was fun for what it was: northern private school, possible magic and witch craft, mental illness, murder…not a bad story.
Mixed feelings about this one! The themes of witchcraft and dark academia are appealing to me and I love so many elements included in this book. I found the characters unlikeable but I think it was mostly the pacing that made me feel ambivalent.
It does have a spooky vibe (which I enjoyed) and a strong mental illness representation which I really appreciate. I can tell the book was written with passion, it just wasn‘t for me.
This was a very slow moving book, and nothing really happened until the end. Overall, this book bored me. I just wanted it to end.
I ran out of shelf space (again), so I stained some cheap crates and glued them together. Done.
#currentlyreading #preview #digital #junerso2022 I am already creeped out. But there‘s a strong literary theme, and a 17 year prize winning author. But also rich girls at boarding school being murdered. So eep.
18 of 2022. Book 1 of #Sharreadathon . This book was just okay for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I have been in a bit of a reading slump. Hopefully one of the next books I pick up will pull me out of it.
Pages read: 384
Look what has finally been published in the UK and dropped through my postbox this morning 😄💕
Excited about this one!
🎧 Oh I know someone is going to say that it‘s the reason for the book but it coulda done without the romance. I just didn‘t feel it.
I loved the premise, the location, the creep factor & the last 25% of the book!! Interesting ending. Dark academia it is!
Extra star for the cover! Makes me want a copy of it even though I felt the book was just a high so-so.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
I liked where this book went eventuality but it took a while to get there. Like other reviewers I thought it was odd these girls are in high school. It really seems like this should be set at a college. The end saved this for me, it took me a while to get through it but I'm glad I did.
I still don‘t know how I feel about this book. The atmosphere wasn‘t as strong as I would have liked and I really like any of the characters. I will say that I didn‘t see the ending coming and appreciated that. However, it‘s best to go into this blind because the synopsis is very misleading and sets you up for something that doesn‘t really happen. If you want something that reads quick set at a boarding school, try this. But it‘s just a meh for me.
I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 335.

I finally finished this and was not expecting that ending. I was expecting it to go one way, but still. I enjoyed the vibes of this book.
3.75/5⭐
Between a pick and so-so.
I loved the atmosphere, writing, and dark academia aesthetic. But the story fell flat.
I forgot often these were high school girls. They read much too old. (No computers or cell phones..c'mon) I'm an old soul and deeply appreciate the setting here but I still embrace technology. 🙄
Read this with an old fashioned while wearing tweed.
A great option if you're looking for some dark academia this October. While the tension between reality and the supernatural isn't as blurred as I anticipated toward the end, it still establishes a haunting tone that looks into the idea of obsession https://youtu.be/gR-7wo9OuQQ
First part of my 14 books read this past week. I took some days off and traveled with hubby and read a lot on our retreat and it was a nice chill anniversary trip. I‘ll post a picture later if I remember 🤣. All but one of these are my audiobooks.

A mid month #bookspinbingo update!
Not doing too great this month 😬
But enjoying all the fun books I'm reading!
@TheAromaofBooks
I have to put plants away, pack, go to physical therapy and try to get these two books done by tomorrow. I‘m almost halfway through both of them so....hopefully I can? I know I can always get them again from the library, but I hate getting halfway through a library book and then returning it unfinished (unless it was a DNF). Anyone else weird like that?
Bk21 of #LittensDressedInBlood & Bk2 of October‘s #Scarathlon2021 #Screamathon #SpookoweenReadathon #Wickedathon #BookspinBingo is done! I really enjoyed this, quite surprised me actually. A dark academia YA, it has elements of mystery, suspense & the supernatural(real or imagined). It‘s always a shock to see how much girls can be awful to each other. #Booked2021 #PickYourPoison #NerdReading2021 #CloakDaggerChal #Pageathon 1,096pts #TeamSlaughter
Next up for #Scarathlon #Screamathon #SpookoweenReadathon #Wickedathon #LittensDressedInBlood etc is this witchy academia book from August‘s #Owlcrate It‘s not bad so far, for a YA novel. Felicity is back at Dalloway School, a centuries old campus in the Catskills after the death of her girlfriend a year ago. Vowing to leave witchcraft alone, she instead finds herself helping the new girl, Ellis, research the Dalloway Five for her new novel. 1pt
I really enjoyed this one. Witches, seance/rituals on Samhain/Halloween and an unreliable narrator. #Scarathlon #TeamHendrix #Screamathon #Wickedathon #SpookOWeen #BookSpinBingo 26pts
This book is a mood and I am soaking it alllll up.

Also finished this one about a week ago, maybe more. This is a weird dark academia story and I just don't quite know what to think of it. There were twists that just kinda popped up and some of the story lines just didn't seem realistic. I did not like Ellis and didn't understand how Felicity did. It just seemed a bit too much a lot of the time. But it did keep my attention.
I kept with this because I enjoyed some of the writing and the story, but overall, it‘s ludicrous. Teens who read as though they‘re in their late 20s or early 30s including one who has summited Everest twice by 16 and another who is a bestselling author? Yeah, ok. And much of the story is absurd. But, honestly, it was kinda fun to hate-listen. 😂
A dark literary academia set in a high end girls' school featuring rituals, death, and magic. The MC is trying to get over the death of her girlfriend while sharing an old house with for other girls (including a writing progidy).
While it's still a pick I think I would have enjoyed the book more had I not read a trigger warning post on Litsy that spoiled the twist for me. If your not worried about triggers I'd suggest going into this book blind.
It's 95° today and absolutely miserable outside. I spent the morning painting in the basement and now I'm going to settle on the sunporch with a new book (which conveniently matches the paint on my leg).
For some reason Tommy cat loves to melt himself in the heat. Weirdo.
