This one was an interesting read. I thought the world was cool, a traveling circus city that moves around, and the magic was intriguing as well, a girl with no eyes that creates illusions, real actual illusions that have become her family, and still sees, and all sorts of other inherent jynx magic.
The story was more whodunnit and I figured it out pretty quickly but still enjoyable enough. Not particularly memorable, but a fun read.

Daughter of the Burning City had a promising storyline, but failed to deliver for me personally. I think the characters and the plot were interesting, but I was left at the end wishing there had been more world building and a better explanation of the magic system. #LMPBC #Round9

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Daughter of the burning city is so magical and creative. The writing was astounding and vivid. I loved every minute of this book. I went into it not knowing much about the book other than it revolved around a show, similar to a circus or carnival. I was so amazed by everything in the novel and completely blown away by how good it was.
Overall the creativity and imagery were just mind-blowing.

#SeptemberDanes #CityOfDreams Set in the world of illusions this YA fantasy is a murder mystery unfolding in the middle of a dark and mysterious magical circus. At the heart of this novel is Sorina, a girl with no eyes, yet graced with the ability to weave complex and realistic illusions. My first (and only)YA fantasy ~ great world building but the story, romance and mystery was thin & weak! I tried...#MoreMehThanYeah **image from Google**

[#BookReview] Daughter of the Burning City by Amanda Foody was such a fun read! It is not a perfect book and I had some issues with the execution as a whole. However, the story and the murder mystery completely hooked me and had me needing to know what was going to happen next. Click the link below for my full thoughts! Have you read it? 📖🔥🌆

Quite enjoyed this magical, quirky, dark read. Inventive and detailed world building, original yet relatable characters, intriguing plot (albeit at times perhaps slightly predictable, but more of a guess than an actual “I solved the mystery!” sort of situation). The pace slows a bit towards the middle but then picks up again. The writing was ok, but the world was so immersive it did the job. A very satisfying read! Thank you so much @Cinfhen 💜💜

In this den of assassins, thieves, and entertainers, we find an illusionist with the power to turn her imaginings into flesh and bone. When the impossible happens and one of them is murdered, her world begins to splinter apart as she searches for the villain who‘s systematically killing off her family. Daughter of the Burning City contains unique characters not frequently seen in its genre thrown into a world of magic, murder, and self-discovery.

I loved how the world of Gomorrah was described. The language was lyrical and so easy to escape into. I enjoyed the mystery and the subtle romance (it wasn‘t overt and in your face, which is nice). I did figure out who was commuting the murders pretty early on but there was a twist that I didn‘t see coming, which I enjoyed. I do hope to see more of Gomorrah and it‘s traveling shows.

So...I read a YA fantasy book and it wasn‘t terrible. I was engaged for the first half but then the plot and story started to dragggggg and I figured out from the onset who the “bad guy” was. Glad I tried it but I won‘t be reading another YA fantasy for awhile.

emilyhaldi Oof, YA and fantasy in one?! Brave! Atleast it want half bad 😄 7y
MicheleinPhilly Did you lose a bet? 7y
Soubhiville Interesting... I have been disappointed with all the YA fantasy I‘ve read this year, and it‘s a genre I used to love. Have you ever enjoyed it? 7y

Kalalalatja Another YA fantasy!? Man, you are really branching out at the moment 😂 pretty flowers, though! 7y
Cinfhen I know @Kalalalatja @MicheleinPhilly @emilyhaldi the blurb sounded really good...and this was actually not bad but it‘s really NOT my preferred genre @Soubhiville and with so many books I really want to read I‘ll probably be skipping YA fantasy for a while. It‘s good to branch out once every so often😀 7y
TrishB I was so surprised when you read this! 7y
TracyReadsBooks When (if) you are ready to try another YA fantasy, take a look at Leigh Bardugo‘s Six of Crows and it‘s sequel Crooked Kingdom if you haven‘t already. It‘s a heist story set in a fantasy world and it does not disappoint. Complex plot, engaging characters, phenomenal worldbuilding and, best of all, great writing. In a saturated field, Bardugo‘s work stands out. Can‘t recommend this duology highly enough (and you don‘t have to like YA to enjoy it). 7y
Mdargusch At least your flowers are pretty. #fowerfriday on Saturday 👍🏼 7y
LeahBergen Gasp! You read YA?? 😆 7y
Reviewsbylola You‘re braver than me. 😂😂 Not only was it YA but it was YA FANTASY!! 7y

BarbaraTheBibliophage Ohmigosh ... you‘ve gone over to the dark side. ♥️ 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Beautiful pic!!! 7y
Elisa I take it it isn‘t your go-to genre 😉 I think YA fantasy may often be more predictable than adult fantasy. Then again, I don‘t think unpredictability is necessarily the main quality that is called for in fantasy work, unlike say, thrillers, which revolve around it. Fantasy is more about originality and world-building, and that‘s what it mostly gets judged for — is this world believable? Can I picture it? But I agree, good twists make it better. 7y
Cinfhen Yes!!! The world building was fantastic and on those merits it‘s a total pick but you‘re correct...this clearly wasn‘t my preferred genre🖤 thanks for your response @elisa definitely helped shift my perspective 😊 7y
Elisa @Cinfhen as a fantasy lover (and someone who has this book on her to-read list 😉) I‘m happy to hear that it had good world-building! I think it‘s cool that you ventured out of your “reading comfort zone” — I do that once in a while as well to shake things up or get out of a book hangover 😅 but I‘ve been mostly on a fantasy kick for the past couple of years, so that‘s what I tend to go back to 😊 7y
Elisa @Cinfhen if you want to recover your faith in YA, Illuminae might be a better pick. It‘s a sci-fi thriller (which sounds completely cheesy, but somehow isn‘t) and surprisingly worth of the hype (shocking, I know! Hype tends to let me down). As for fantasy recommendations, I personally really dislike the Six of Crow duology so I can‘t second that rec 😅 But if you ever decide to give epic fantasy a try, Brandon Sanderson is The King 😉😁🌟🌟🌟🌟 7y
Cinfhen 😂 so many different opinions...I‘m happy to mail u the book @Elisa since you‘ll give it a proper home...let me know 7y
Elisa @Cinfhen oh that is incredibly kind, but I live in Europe, so shipping might be a bit steep and I couldn‘t ask you to do that! But that‘s such a lovely offer — only on Litsy 😍😍 7y
Elisa And yes, it‘s a constant source of amusement and curiosity for me to see how varied opinions can be on the same books! 😂 7y
Cinfhen I‘m actually in Israel, so shipping to EU is reasonable...I‘m happy too @elisa 7y

Really great read with an interesting premise, fantastical world building and likeable characters all topped with a tense mystery. I really loved the clever use of simple illustrations to give a glimpse in to the past and to add another "voice" to this first person present tense narrative. Like the smoky nocturnal city itself, this book invites you in to its constantly moving world of magic and stomach twisting entertainment.

Daughter of the Burning City was such a treat! It was mysterious, thrilling, original and cute all at the same time, with really amazing characters. A central theme in the book is what makes someone a 'real' person, something that's definitely less clear than it seems. I would have preferred a somewhat less predictable story though - it was pretty obvious who the murderer was throughout most of the book...

I love the plot of the story, cause for me travelling circus are fun. Not that i've experienced it, there arent any in my part of the world. The story line is also good! However, i feel that it is a bit rushed... i think it could have been a great series or perhaps duology... just to get more into the details on how things turned out like they did.

Another random pick to listen to while I work and another winner! I loved the mystic atmosphere of the carnival as well as it's history. The additional of some Old Testament lore involving Gomorra was pretty cool and I also think that focusing on the Mystery element was a great touch. It seems like YA novels tend to stay away from Mystery novels.

Hopefully my next #workaudio is a good one. I've had some trouble finding binge worthy listens.

Sorina is an illusionist in a traveling show whose illusions start getting murdered. In order to save her illusion family she has to find out who's you blame. Add in magic, political intrigue, and a touch of romance... you've got a unique and engaging story.

At times Sorina's voice seems a little too naive and childish, but she's only 16 and has been sheltered. And as the book progresses you start to understand why that's the case.

Enjoyable.
