When You Reach Me
When You Reach Me | Rebecca Stead
This remarkable novel holds a fantastic puzzle at its heart. By sixth grade, Miranda and her best friend, Sal, know how to navigate their New York City neighborhood. They know where it's safe to go, and they know who to avoid. Like the crazy guy on the corner. But things start to unravel. Sal gets punched by a kid on the street for what seems like no reason, and he shuts Miranda out of his life. The apartment key that Miranda's mom keeps hidden for emergencies is stolen. And then a mysterious note arrives, scrawled on a tiny slip of paper. The notes keep coming, and Miranda slowly realizes that whoever is leaving them knows things no one should know. Each message brings her closer to believing that only she can prevent a tragic death. Until the final note makes her think she's too late.

Looking for a fun YA time travel audiobook? One that channels A Wrinkle in Time (without the religious undertone)? I found this just for you. Seriously. No idea how I found it. But here it is.

I needed a middle grade novel for one of my reading challenges, and this has just been hanging out on my kindle forever… absolutely loved it!

Time travel, sixth grade angst, late 70s NYC, and $25,000 Pyramid. Lots of fun and a super quick read.

Another (hot!) day of soccer for this dude. He kicked some SERIOUS bootie with 6 goals, while today I kicked this books butt! It was a super fast paced YA. Not what I expected, but definitely not unwelcome. I really couldn‘t (and didn‘t want to) put it down to adult. It has a little bit of adventure, mystery and some science fiction. On top of it all, you enjoy going with Miranda on her coming of age story.

KateReadsYA Awww how fun. We had to miss our soccer practice today due to the heat being out of control haha. 2y

I really was a reading snob as a kid and I cheated myself out of so many great books! This was SPECTACULAR!! I get a headache thinking about time travel but I think I'm at a 6th grade level. Miranda starts getting strange letters from someone which causes her to rethink everything, even reality itself! #Top100KidLit

What a fun, quick read this is! Preteen angst, physics, learning how to be a good person (and how to cope when we don't live up to our expectations for ourselves), with a little mystery woven through all of it. From Build Your Library homeschool curriculum, level 6.

I listened to this on audio, so I probably didn't absorb everything. My mind tends to wander when I listen to audio. Nevertheless, it was a good story. “A Wrinkle in Time,“ is referenced throughout, and I hadn't read that novel at the time. It made me look forward to reading it all the more.

This SF, Newbery Award Winner follows Miranda Sinclair and how she learns independence as ominous notes from the future take her on a journey. This book would be great for IR. has wonderful resources. UDL 8.3 which fosters collaboration and community would work great for this book. I finished this book a couple weeks ago. I think this book is a 7 out of 10. I loved the character Miranda, and being able to see her perspective on the situation. I would read something like this again, because I love realistic fiction genres. However, I like reading with some action and edge-of-your seat stories. This one was slower and more realistic.

Nute Unfortunately I don‘t remember past reading experiences very well. Usually I‘ll recall that I read a particular book and whether or not I enjoyed it. “When You Reach Me” by Rebecca Stead is a science fiction novel that won the Newberry Award. This book has been frequently compared to “A Wrinkle in Time” and has said to have many of the same positive qualities. This book is about a sixth grader who receives mysterious messages from a stranger who knows everything about her and can predict the future. This website provides a very helpful lesson plan that could be used:

Kcallihan https://www.teachingbooks.net/clp.cgi?master_id=15569&lf_id=9. This lesson plan includes a story map with different levels for students depending on their comprehension levels. I could use UDL 5.3 “build fluencies with graduated levels of support and practice and performance.” This would fit because the different levels 6y
Kcallihan in the lesson plan would assist in fluency. For the ESOL strategies I would use #4 to link the lesson topic to student‘s prior knowledge. The prior knowledge I could connect is how to make a map and what a story map looks like. #lae3414sp19 6y
Kcallihan For this book I would use SR so that students can read it with a partner for guidance while also having more independence than a whole class reading. 6y
DrSpalding This is a very cool science-fiction novel. Love the old game show theme to it. 6y
