“There is an Arabic proverb that says: She makes you feel like a loaf of freshly baked bread. It is said about the nicest, kindest people. The type of people who help you rise.” Comment someone who helps you rise! @DrSpalding helps me rise, so I can be the best teacher I can be! #NCHPedsReads #JanPedsReads

DrSpalding That made my day Channing! Thank you! ❤️📚 5y
CodyFordPEDS My fiancée helps me rise. No matter the kind of day I‘m having, she lifts me up. No matter what path I choose to forge, she is with me. It‘s important to have that in your life. One of Jude and Fatima‘s favorite things to do is drink tea and watch movies! Jude describes the movies she likes, and the actresses she relates to in those movies! If you were to watch a movie with Jude, which movie would you pick to watch? Why? If I were to watch a movie with Jude, I would watch Frozen. I think Frozen would be fun to watch with Jude because the movies she describes do not include an animated movie! #NCHPedsReads #JanPedsReads

sydneydaniels I would watch Frozen with Jude too! Haha love your post. 5y
Bshelton27 I would watch the emoji movie! I actually really like this one and how can really feel the emotions from all the characters! Frozen would for sure be my second pick though 5y

Where in the Wild by David M. Schwartz and Yarl Schy is a NF PB all about camouflage. The information is given through P which I think makes this book even more unique. Students will have so much fun trying to find the animals in the pictures. I would use this as a RA, but also have the book available so students can look at it up close! #LAE3414Sp19

When You Reach Me | Rebecca Stead

When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead is a SF novel that I believe many students will enjoy during IR. Personally, I found this book difficult to follow so I would encourage my students to draw a concept map to keep their thoughts organized. Other than that I thought this novel was entertaining and a good read! I would also only encourage students who are in 4th grade and above to read this book. #LAE3414Sp19

How I Discovered Poetry | Marilyn Nelson
post image
Pickpick

How I Discovered Poetry by Marilyn Nelson is a wonderful story to begin a poetry unit. This Coretta Scott King Honor book is about Nelson‘s life and how she discovered poetry. Her story is told through P (sonnets). It was a very quick read, and at the end of the book she explains to the reader why and how she wrote her book. #LAE3414Sp19

Channing_Austin As an African American child growing up in the 1950s, her story touched on many topics like racism, and the Civil Rights Movement. In addition, she also talks about the atomic bomb and the early rumblings of the feminist movement. 6y
Channing_Austin I would use this book as part of an AS. Due to some of the content, this book should be limited to 6th grade students and above. Although this book is not the best for elementary students, there are topics that are addressed in this book that students need to learn about. So, if you are thinking about 6th grade or becoming a LA teacher in the secondary grade levels, this book would be a great addition to your classroom library. 6y
Channing_Austin As stated above, I would use this book as part of a poetry unit. This resource talks about poets and how they are inspired to write poetry. Lucy and I really enjoyed Out of Wonder: Poems Celebrating Poets. It is a wonderful picture book to celebrate P (Anthology). This book would be a great introduction to a poetry unit in your classroom. I would definitely use it as a RA. #LAE3414SP19

Channing_Austin At the end of the book there are paragraphs about each of the famous poets that the poets celebrate throughout the book. And let‘s not forget about the beautiful pictures by Ekua Holmes. The illustrations that go along with each poem really brings the poems to life! This book won the Coretta Scott King Award! 6y
Channing_Austin This book is recommended for older middle school students, however, some of the poems could be shared in a higher elementary classroom. I believe this picture book would give students a great introduction into poetry and what it is all about. 6y

The New York Times‘ Bestseller, Stella by Starlight, takes you back in time to the 1930s where tensions are running high in the small town of Bumblebee, NC. The Ku Klux Klan has made their way to the town of Bumblebee and is stirring up trouble. Main character, Stella Mills talks about the issues happening in her town through her writing. #LAE3414SP19

Channing_Austin Throughout the story, Stella struggles putting her thoughts down on paper. I believe many students can relate to that, making this HF novel a great read for older students. Author Sharon Draper wrote this book based on her grandmother‘s writing. This novel would be best in LC because students will feel happiness, frustration, hatred, and love while reading. The Crossover by Kwame Alexander is RF novel about two twin brothers, told through P. Since the story is told through poems, the page structure is different. I believe with fewer words on each page, students will not feel overwhelmed and stay motivated to keep reading. #LAE3414SP19

Channing_Austin The Crossover is about two twin brothers who are exceptional basketball players, and is told through Josh‘s point of view. Josh learns it is hard growing up because things start to change. As the reader, you will feel the overwhelming emotions Josh feels both on and off the court because of these changes.
