A fun book to read in your class about resilience. So i would teach about how you should never give up and to keep trying no matter how hard it is
Off we Go! A bear and more story by Will Hillenbrand(2013). Fun illustrations remind me of older illustrations and bring back fun memories of elementary school. This book is full of Onomatopoeias and has themes of never giving up.
Cute book! I would use this in my classroom to prevent conflicts from happening because even if things are different it doesn't matter because everything works out in the end.
East Dragon, West Dragon by Robyn Eversole (2012). great rhythm throughout the pages. the muted colors add a sense of calm to the story. There is a rivalry between the two dragons and lots of comparisons throughout. The west dragon goes on a mission to find some friends, but then there is a war, and the west dragon wins.
I would use this in a classroom to help combat interruptions during story time
Interrupting Chicken and the Elephant of Surprise, by David Ezra Stein(2018). within the fun-loving humorous book, a little chicken is getting read a bed time story. the dad is reading classic fairytales when, the little chicken gets a little creative. in the end the little chicken creates his own story and he interrupts even his own.
“ CHicken! there are no elephants in the Ugly duckling“

Lots of dots by Craig Frazier (2010). Picture book. the very simple pictures with bright colors that evoke powerful emotions and feelings. They wonder what other dots you can find in the world around you. The illistratuions are abstract as well provoking more thoughts
“ if you must act wild, kindly go to the wilderness. ... what a magnificent idea“
I would use this book in a classroom in just a read-aloud since it is just a fun book and shows that it is okay to follow your ideas and see what comes out of it. Great pick I could see myself using this in my classroom one day.
Picture book- Mr Tiger Goes Wild by Peter Brown (2013). This story is about a tiger in a city where everyone wears suits and tophats. He decides that something is wrong and slowly changes into a wild tiger and goes onto all 4s. He then gets sad and misses his friends. He goes back to the city and notices something has changed. This book uses the illustrations really well to show emotions and promote questions throughout the book for all ages.
I would do an activity by giving a piece of paper to each student and letting them make something out of it. Then telling them to change it into something else until there was nothing less. After this, I would have the students write about their experiences.
“ So Joseph made a book about it. Which shows... you can always make something after nothing“
Joseph Had a Little Overcoat by Simms Taback, 1999 Caldecott winner. The imagery is very colorful and brings joy to the book. The words are also limited per page focusing on illustrations and the details within them and it is kind of like finding different pictures and figures per page.
I would use this book to show to never give up on dreams and how sometimes when you wait everything will work out. I would do an activity to make your imaginary friend and how they came into the world and became their friend.
Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend by Dan Santat, 2014- Caldecott Award winner. This is a great book about perseverance and I love how simple but complex the illustrations are there is just enough detail to tell the story but not too much it is overwhelming. The way the pages are also sectioned at a time creates movement to the pages.
I would use this to teach about being kind and how words you dont think will impact people will. this would wrk well with social emotional learning
Big by Vashti Harrison 2023- Caldecott. This is a very simplictic book with an amzing message. It shows the impact of words on a person and how we can feel that we are not worthy even from a young age. The images and colors within show the emotions of how the protagisint feels throughout.
“Its Venom Burns the land. Courses through the water making it unfit to drink.“
I would use this in the classroom, especially around earth day, and show why we have to take care of the earth and what happens if we do not. I would teach cause and effect and see if we don't do this what happens. This could also go into a persavie writing unit about how to stop pipes of oil from being built.
We are the Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom, 2021- Caldecott. This story is a great cause-and-effect book. It shows how if we do not take care of the earth and the water in it we lose many things around us. This book also shows history and folk stories since it is told by Native American elders. It is so well written and the images are amazing truly a great read
“His name was christerpher robinMilne. Christopher robin would visit Winnie at the zoo and then he would take his stuffed animal on all sorts of adventures in the woods behind his house.“
I would use this in the classroom for text-to-text connections because many people know the story of Winnie the pooh and would love to know the history i would make them compare and contrast what they thought would happen compared to what did happen.
Finding Winnie by Lindsay Mattick, 2015 - Caldecott. This is a great book for historical fiction and using a text-to-text story. Many people know Winnie the Pooh but do not know the back story behind it and this story brings it to life and is an inspirational text. The history within the book is amazing and brings you back to when it was actually happening with the amazing pictures and the imagery within.
I would use this for children to explain stories and recreate in a way where each person can form a new story and share it and compare because each person explains and sees different details.
flotsam by David Wiesner, 2006- caldecott. This book has no words so it very much focuses on the images and the sense of wonder the reader gets. The images are amazing with deltais that wont overwelm you but just enough to notice different things. It shows the pattern of a child at the beach and everything he finds through out his time on a new object
This would be a great read aloud book because it gives a sense of wonder to the reader since there is amazing images and simple wording could work a lot with predictions
The House in the Night by Susan Swanson,2008- Caldecott winner. This book is really easy to read and it results in a calming book that pleases children with simple working per page and drawing in simple colors and not overwhelming at all. The accents of yellow brings a brightness to the page as well.
“ at once, Shang lit the light and wolf blew it out again, but shang had seen the wolfs hairy face“
I would use this in a classroom with comparing stories since they are all slightly different and seeing how the sotry changes depending on the author.
Lon Po Po by Ed Young, 1989. Caldecott award-winning book. This is a folk tale from China, it reminds me of the Little Red Riding Hood, but with a twist since the wolf is in the clouds and it is in more of a dream state. It makes the author have a sense of wonder throughout
“ he spins and jumps into the air. toughing the stage again he kneels with his arms spread out, and the silk top hat and gold-tipped cane lie side by side.“
I would use this in a classroom, beucase some of my students live with all differnt people. But I would also use it in a way showing the love of story telling and the different ways that could happen, within a history lesson, I would start off with pictographs and how folk sotryeis were made and the value of listening to stories from others.
Song and Dance man by Karen Ackerman, 1988. caldecott winner- the color on the pages add a warm feeling to my body when I read the story. The images also bring happy feeling because they have so many smiles on their faces and the colors add a sense of joy to reading about the history of what it was like back in the day.
There is no words on the page but I love how they highlight so many amazing black historical figures
This is a great text to read to any classroom!! It‘s fun and lighthearted but still feels great and easy to read. I could see my self using it in a classroom because of the idea of bringing fun to the library
Picture book- Caldecott honor book and Corbett‘s Scott king illustrator honor book
This was a wonderful story bringing history to life. It flows very well and allows young readers to learn about iconic poets and “ letter kings”. The illustrations add the the journey and are very vibrant
