This would be a great book to have throughout the year but especially to celebrate this holiday because it goes into in-depth about making prints as well

NF Funny Bones: Posada and His Day of the Dead Calaveras | Duncan Tonatiuh 2015
This book shows lots of the traditions of the Day of the Dead and some of the preparation it takes to fulfill this celebration. This book also embraces you within Mexican culture showing you so much about why they do this and the things that keep this holiday alive.
“He would praise them if he agreed with their decisions and actions. But he would ridicule them if he disagreed with them“
Posada's work moved from literary calaveras, which featured short humorous poems, to social and political commentary.
This story is about how calaveras came to be. The story takes place between 1852-1913 about a young boy named Lupe who learned the art of printing. He drew political cartoons while his country was not known for freedom of speech. He is best know today for his calvera drawings which have become synonymous with mexicos Day of the Dead.

Cute book about the Day of the Dead. Also for #ominousoctober prompt - “bones”. @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks #scarathlon #teamslaughter @Clwojick
#DearDecember Day 11: Here, the reader gets introduced to a little-known-artist named José Guadalupe Posada who popularized the “#festive bony figures calaveras,” often seen during the Day of the Dead. The book traces Posada‘s history as far back as 1852, the year he was born, along with a description of his huge family. My full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-bdI
“...no matter how fancy your clothes are on the outside, on the side we are all the same.”
The illustrations in this book are unbelievable! This book inspires me to think of activities I can use with students to teach on the day of the dead.
Funny Bones by Duncan Tonatiuh, 2015. In this book posada ‘s calaveras or artworks of skeletons are displayed especiallg on the day of the dead! The illustrations throughout the book are very detailed and colorful as well. This book is a great way to discuss traditions in cultures. I really like the fact that the author uses English but also incorporates Spanish as well!

Not sure how to point this:
1 point participation, 2 points theme (skulls?) = 3 points ? (It‘s not about Halloween but Day of the Dead so day after Halloween)
So we don‘t celebrated Dia de Los Muertos but my grandma had a little alter and celebrated. I remember having so many questions about it and practicing the celebration with her.
While browsing Libby, this one jumped out at me. The pictures are super cute!!!

“And on that special day there is always somewhere an altar with an ofrenda to remember the great Don Lupe Posada.”
My favorite part of this book is the illustrations/cartoons!
Funny bones was a overall pretty good book! It is very informational about how calaveras came to be. Also talks about how day of the day came to be. This is a great book for your classroom because it is a very teachable reading.
“Drew some wild skeletons racing and trampling one another. Was he saying that we can try to go faster but one day we will all reach the same finish line and become Calaveras?”
The pictures in this book are beautiful and fun.
Funny bones by Duncan Tonatiuh is a nonfictional book that was published in 2015. This book is about the day of the dead and shows pictures of skeletons performing funny activities. His drawing became famous because of his skeletons doing multiple everyday activities. The poses soon had then became identified with the day of the dead which is what is pictured in this book.
“Skeletons riding bicycles... skeletons wearing fancy hats... skeletons dancing and strumming on guitars.”
The drawings are very different but beautiful.
Funny Bones is a nonfiction book written by Duncan Tonatiuh. This book tells the story of calaveras. It is very informational especially to someone who is not of that culture. This story is important but long, I would not read it to very young children because they would not catch on. In the back of the book a lot of resources to learn more.
Nonfiction. This is a wonderful story for a classroom, especially if you plan on observing or learning about Dia fe Muertos. It‘s informational but feels like a story and looks like a picture book, making it a great read aloud story or a story for individual reading.
Funny Bones: Posada and His Day of the Dead Calaveras by Duncan Tonatiuh, 2015. This is a wonderful nonfiction story because it feels like a story but it‘s also telling the history of the Calaveras and Dia de Muertos. The fun illustrations alongside Posadas original works make the story engaging and the story itself is very interesting and informative.
I love this quote!! It‘s a beautiful way to memorialize our loved ones and reflect that even other groups feel the same way as this particular culture.
“Don Lupe saw his country-and especially Mexico City-change dramatically during his life.”
I love this illustration!! Such a famous drawing! I have seen this many times in movies, spanish class, and more! Each time I see it I fall in love with it more!
The illustrations bring the culture and story to life.
Published in 2015, this nonfiction book is filled with resources and information to inform the reader, but in a fun filled story-like way. It includes an index, locating posadas in the USA, glossary, bibliography, authors note, and art credits! Not only is there a story about the culture and tradition, but there are so many opportunities to really learn about the diverse group! The illustrations bring dia de los muertos to life on so many ways!
This nonfiction book was published in 2015. It is full of information and facts about the Day of the Dead. It tells the story of how the skull faces and decorations came to be. It reflects the culture and traditions of these people. The illustrations are detailed and beautifully crafted to go along with the stories.
A beautifully Illustrated baby book that explains the life of artist Posada and his journey. A Belpre winner! I was so excited to pick up a book about an artist because you're never sure where their inspiration came from. This pb not only has facts but it is also engaging and fun to read. You can use this book for a ra or as an ir

I don‘t want to work today! I‘d rather be resting my #bones in a patio chair with a book and a beverage! #blackcatchallenge #weatherkittyapp
Can‘t vouch for these books, but they seem quite interesting. I think I‘m going to look for these so I can share them with my stepson. I figure I should try to teach him a bit about my culture and what better way than with books. For those of you trying to introduce kids to a bit of Mexican culture these books may be a good start. #diversebooks

Tonatiuh does it again! Focused on the life of Jose Guadalupe Posada, this #biography sheds light on his life & the processes by which he created his iconic art. Tonatiuh's signature style brings this #nonfiction #picturebook to life.
#AllHallowsEve
This children's biography of José Guadalupe Posada celebrates the artist and social commentator. This is where we are starting with the kids for our Day of the Dead celebration.
#DayofTheDead #DiaDeLosMuertos This is our current library display in the children's area, with a few new books ( not pictured bc they are on the two bottom shelves) that we needed to update our collection! I got to help pick some of the new books, and the first one I have read was Funny Bones- my favorite part of the book( other than the story) is the artwork! @Litsy #AllHallowsRead
This gorgeously illustrated book tells the story of the origins of the calveras - the festive skeletons created by Mexican Artist, Jose Guadalupe Posada, that have become synonymous with Day of The Dead celebrations. A fascinating read and a visual treat on every page!
