Last night I attended a book club of the original Sense & Sensibility paired with a showing of the 1995 version of the movie at a local indie theatre. It was just delightful to hear the laughter and gasps from an audience that loved the movie so deeply. What a joy to be celebrating and discussing Austen‘s work centuries after it was written.

I started this back when we were reading S+S adjacent books — I know — but just recently picked it up again. Emma Thompson is a delight! Her diaries are hilarious and heartfelt and I got so much insight on the movie-making process for one of my all-time favorites.

This exchange between Alan Rickman and Kate Winslet was the best:

Kate: ‘Oh God, my knickers have gone up my arse.‘
Alan: ‘Ah. Feminine mystique strikes again.‘ 😂

1. Austen has a lot a hate-able characters but, in my opinion, Willoughby is the worst!

2. Characters, for sure!

Thanks to my #pemberlittens, I found out about this amazing book! I can't wait to read it. And it's just in time because this is my favorite movie and it's almost my birthday! Feels kismet. 💘

jesseastin It‘s also wonderful as an audiobook read by Juliet Stevenson. I should give it another listen. 😊 4y

Linsy @Andrea313 😄 No, but seriously, a Slytherin! Cares most about the end game -- not Gryffindor material. Courage is what he's lacking! 4y
Andrea313 @Linsy Absolutely! Falls for a girl but chooses to follow the money instead? No bravery there! 4y
Linsy @Andrea313 Exactly!! And even before that, ditches another girl (pregnant with his child) and sites the coming to light of that as ruining his life. Maybe his behavior was the problem!! He just looks out for number one. (edited) 4y

Today I‘ve caught up with my reading, and have read through chapter 4.

I‘ve been introduced to the Dashwoods, mother (almost 40), Elinor (19), Marianne (16) and Margaret (13).
I‘ve also met their stepbrother and his awful wife. What kind of people expect a person of not yet 40 yr to die within the next 15 yrs?
I‘ve met Edward Ferris.
And lastly I‘ve been introduced to their new home, Barton Cottage.

This is my translated edition of S&S that I will be reading for a chapter a day. It was a Christmas present from my parents in 1997. I‘ve reread it once since than, a few years ago.

Then I promised myself that the next time I read S&S, it would be in English in one of the wonderful editions. My problem is that I want to have all the books in the same edition and I can‘t decide among all the beautiful editions. So I‘ll see what happens.

sprainedbrain There are so many gorgeous editions to choose from! 5y
AnneCecilie @sprainedbrain I know. I absolutely love the clothbound one and the vintage one. Makes it hard to decide. 5y

It‘s the first truly beautiful spring day here, so I read a bit outside today. Amused by this quote from Marianne “I could not be happy with a man whose taste did not in every point coincide with my own. He must enter into all my feelings; the same books, the same music must charm us both.” How is everyone enjoying Sense & Sensibility? #Pemberlittens

Sense and Sensibility was shown in the Lakeside Chautauqua auditorium last night to kick off the Jane Austen at 200 week. There are lectures about her and her works coming up that I‘m very excited about.

Why is Hugh Grant in so little of this movie? ☹️

I also love when his sister in law says she doesn‘t like the smell of books in this scene. That pretty much sums up her character.

Lauram How fun! Some very good friends of mine are there this week, too. I‘m always interested in hearing about what they‘ll be learning. (edited) 6y

jillrhudy Some day our grandkids will say too much was made of Branaugh and not enough of Thompson. The best thing about S&S is that Emma ended up with Willoughby. 6y

pgh.femme I ❤️ Lakeside 6y
LeahBergen @jillrhudy @rabbitprincess @Mdargusch I was reading an article about the making of the movie and Hugh Laurie was hesitant about some of his lines. He said something to the effect of “these things are just too rude to say or do” and Emma Thompson had to tell him that they were what Jane Austen wrote. 😂😂 6y
Mdargusch That is really funny because I was thinking the same thing @LeahBergen but I didn‘t realize she actually wrote them that way! 6y

#jubilantJuly I don't have any books with #rain in the title, but I seem to recall a scene from the movie where Marianne and Elinor are soaked from being caught in a downpour. The photo is from last month, when we had nonstop rain, and the view of my backyard was pretty soggy

I'm so happy I found this book at a used book shop! Emma Thompson's Oscar winning screenplay is excellent, but her detailed diaries about the making of the film are the real gem. Thompson's wit had me laughing throughout and I loved the behind-the-scenes glimpse at the daily filmmaking grind. There are some very funny quotes from the cast and crew, also! #janeausten #senseandsensibility

Day 3 of the #octphotochallenge - A character you liked better in the movie. I love Elinor and Marianne in the novel, but Emma Thompson's portrayal of Elinor Dashwood in the Ang Lee adaptation is my favorite. She gets the balance of affection for family and sense of duty just right. Might need to listen to that soundtrack today! PS - I have a weird aversion to books with movie poster as the cover; my worn copy of this is an exception! 😜

This is one of my favorite movies written by one of my favorite actors about one of my favorite books.
Emma Thompson's diary of the movie is as funny and charming as you would expect.
I checked this out from the library when it came out, then tried to buy a few years later but it was out of print. A few years after that I found a pristine copy at our Library Friends books sale!

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Fate! I adore this movie (but reading the book almost killed me. I hated it so) 8y
BookInMyHands @thegirlwiththelibrarybag Haha! The first time I started "Pride and Prejudice" I just couldn't get into it. Then I picked it up a few years later and I loved it. I'm a moody reader. I hate required reading list (especially in school). I felt that if I could pick up a book later I might actually like it instead of finishing something I don't like reading. 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @BookInMyHands, I was already a fan of the movie tho - I just flat out didn't enjoy the book. Required reading for school could be a drag. 8y
