My Husband: A Novel | Maud Ventura

Pickpick

My, oh my. The wife is nuts! Her all-consuming obsession for her husband, her insecurities, neuroticism, are intriguing and suspenseful to read in the beginning. But the repetition annoyed me. I know it‘s to stress how obsessed she is, but I was impatient to get to the end. And I didn‘t like the twist at the end (I saw many loved it). Giving it a Pick as I found some parts amusing and entertaining.

BarbaraBB She is nuts indeed! 2d

Narratively, I am enjoying this one, although it's pretty early to make any real calls. Physically, on a book-as-object level, there is something I find irksome about it, although I'm not sure what. I may have to switch over to the ebook (or wait for the paperback).

Erinreadsthebooks I‘m intrigued by the “book-as-object” evaluation. I‘ve probably dnf-ed some books based on that and didn‘t even realize the root of the problem! 😄 1w
Tamra I completely agree and get it. 1w

I thought this would be an interesting social commentary, looking at a time when divorce was not widely legal, forcing women (of means) to live in Nevada for a short time to “establish residency,” then finally be granted their divorce. But I got through about 25% of it and it‘s like watching paint dry. Back to the library it goes!

marleed But that cover though! 2w
Hooked_on_books @marleed Right? I think that‘s what drew me in. I‘m still happy to look at it. 😆 2w
marleed @Hooked_on_books I‘m such a sucker for cover art of a sun-glassed midcentury-look drawn woman on a book cover. I‘m sure it has to do with my JackieO sunglasses obsession 😎 2w

I enjoyed it so much. Expecting our first kid in two weeks and I have so many things to take away from this read. I asked my partner to also read it because I want to keep our relationship a happy&strong one even when the baby arrives and this book has a lot of food for thought 🙏🫶 #janceedunn #hownottohateyourhusbandafterkids

The Half Moon: A Novel | Mary Beth Keane

Pickpick

This story was so relatable to me. Like Jess, I'm a lawyer in my early 40s. We even have the same maiden name! And though my issue wasn't necessarily infertility, my husband and I wanted kids but it didn't happen for us for other reasons, and we both had to process that and grieve the what could have beens in our own way and time, and that puts a strain on a marriage. Keane writes beautiful novels with such realistically flawed characters.

This American Life (my latest obsession) was my first introduction to Dan Savage, and I quickly purchased his book. Witty and intelligent, full of big feelings and hilarious surprises, comes Savage's debate and heartfelt ode to his family. I laughed out loud more than once and tucked away excerpts in my arsenal of retorts for the inevitable run-in with a disgruntled right-winger and/or religious troll ("powers of gay marriage activate!").

I was so disappointed after all the praises to this book. Totally mediocre and wearying book about practically nothing. Characters were unlikable people, their behavior was stupid and incomprehensible...
