The story was so cheesy. I don't know how many times I cringed and rolled my eyes, but I did it quite a lot. In the end though, I didn't hate it. 🤫

ljuliel It‘s got an odd title, doesn‘t it ? 5y
JulietReads @ljuliel Because of the title, I thought the book was going to be about happy people. It turns out that it's actually about lonely depressed people. Lol. 5y

Happy National drink coffee day! Do happy people like to read books and drink coffee or is it that reading books and drinking coffee makes us happy? Either way I'm good! It's a cool rainy day here so no outside work and play. Lots of inside chores are getting done but I had to take a break for a short book and one more cup of coffee to celebrate this day ðŸ˜ðŸ“šâ˜•

I don‘t recommend it... I want to think that some information was missed due to it being a translated book, but it seemed so rushed that I just can‘t truly believe it. The characters have changes that simply seem too drastic as well. I feel there are many gaps in this one.

Diane's life is drastically changed in one moment. What makes this book a good read is that Diane finds her footing and in doing so finds herself.

My library has this amazing thing called book clubs in a bag where you can check out the entire bag for your face to face book club. I was curious as to what book was in it today. Here it is....anyone familiar with this book? I had never heard of it!

Zelma I will be the lone dissenter as I despised this book. It‘s really dark and depressing, with unlikable people, and not the cute fluffy book the cover make it look like. 7y
ericarobynreads I enjoyed this one. Though after reading the first three pages, I came verrrrry close to adding this book to my DNF list.

However, I decided to continue on and I am very glad that I did! In fact, I read it in one sitting. I wasn't "hooked" per say, but I did enjoy it so much that I didn't want to go to sleep until I had finished it. I think it would be great for book club!

#JubilantJuly #day13 #LostLoves #day14 #SetInFrance This book covers both prompts well, the beginning & end is set in France 🇫🇷 & the main character, Diane, loses both of her loves, her husband & daughter, in a horrible car accident. Diane used to run a bookstore/cafe in Paris until that fateful day when her world ended. After a year of refusing to leave her apartment, she decides to move to a remote Irish coastal village to rebuild her life.

So that cheerful blue cover with the window box of flowers? Wrong. This is much more apropos.

I only finished this because it was short. Unlikeable characters, so many cliches and cardboard characters, a love interest who was an awful person, and everyone smoked a cigarette about every other sentence. The sections about the protagonist's grief were really raw and actually quite effective but the rest was just terrible. Ugh!

britt_brooke Love honest reviews! ðŸ‘ðŸ»ðŸ‘ðŸ»ðŸ‘🻠8y

Zelma @DebinHawaii well, if you ever get tempted and start reading it, you can finish it in a day or so. So it has that going for it! 😆 and honestly, everything in the book dealing with the protagonist's grief was good; I was teary reading such depression and despondency. 8y

I know this had some mixed reviews, I decided to give it a go last night before bed and read half of it. Diane is a prickly character and it's hard to warm to her though she got under my skin. I think the translation could be a bit cleaner but overall I enjoyed, grief is such a personal thing and this resonated with me. Plus I love the Aran Islands which make a cameo

Mariposa_Bookworm I happened across this one in Overdrive last year. I was immediately drawn in because the first lines completely contradicted what the title suggests. The translation was a little choppy to me, but I loved this book. 8y

Thanks to everyone with awesome suggestions for me to read the other day! 💕💕💕 I love this community so much. Still struggling and today was tiring. But I have these lovelies planned on my nook and I think I may have a nice reading evening ahead. The Underground Railroad is up first, I think.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Underground Railroad is on my list too to read this year, that and Underground Airlines which also came out last year. 8y
Zelma @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I really liked Underground Airlines. I think in another year it may have gotten a bit more attention and not gotten lost in the shuffle. It is more of a thriller plus character study. Super interesting, completely believable, and unsettling. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Zelma I agree, I haven't read either yet, but Underground Airlines caught my attention first, and I bought it first...and it wasn't long after that Underground Railroad was the talk of everyone and on every list. I'm anticipating both to be very good, but still sad one seemed overshadowed by the other (and that's without reading either yet). 8y
Zelma @Riveted_Reader_Melissa am about 30 pages in to tUR and it is outstanding writing. I can already tell that this will deserve all of the accolades it has received. UA is quite good but in a different, page turner kind of way. Also, super different stories and tones, just similar titles. 8y

Zelma @Suzze yay! I am not excited about reading it on my iPad, but I decided I wanted to read it now and not wait for print. I plan to dive in as soon as I catch up on Litsy today. 😀👠8y
Zelma @Suzze btw, I always do a double take when I see you comment; my nickname in real life is Suz. 8y
Suzze @Zelma We both have the same "real" first name, Susan. I've been called Suzze since 9th grade (1966) it's supposed to be Soo-zay ( with accent over the e. But I gave up years ago. Everyone calls me Soozee or Suz (like yours!) I'm reading Fairyland on my iPad through Hoopla. I love the colors and like to read it with the lights off. LOL 8y
Zelma @Suzze I had a brief stint as Suzie but it wasn't me at all. A few relatives still call me that but I've been Suz since I was little. A bunch of Susans in my family so we all have different nicknames. I'll answer to anything but Suzanne. 😆 8y

I finished this book in 24 hours. I started reading it on a whim and was drawn into Diane's story. It's written in such simple prose it's almost elementary school, which usually turns me off. However the roller coaster of emotions that Diane experiences drew me in. Everyone is trying to find themselves and rebuild from losses and disappointment. Such a good read!

#bookisholympics #bookone Finished my first book of the day! Would have been done sooner but I had a nanna nap for a few hours. It's Sunday and the Hubbys roasting a leg of lamb, it made me sleepy. This is a sweet little book about loss and the despair when you know the people you love are never coming back. I cried. A lot. The only criticism is I'd have loved for the ending to be different. No spoilers! Groot approves of my choice.
