The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle
The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes | Arthur Conan Doyle
26 posts | 33 read | 5 to read
Watson visits his friend Holmes at Christmas time and finds him contemplating a battered old hat, brought to him by the commissionaire Peterson after the hat and a Christmas goose had been dropped by a man in a scuffle with some street ruffians. Peterson takes the goose home to eat, but later returns to Holmes with a blue carbuncle his wife had found in the bird's crop (throat). Holmes makes some interesting deductions concerning the owner of the hat from simple observations of its condition, conclusions amply confirmed when an advertisement for the owner produces the man himself: Henry Baker. Holmes cannot resist such an intriguing mystery, and he and Watson set out across the city to determine exactly how the jewel, stolen from the Countess of Morcar during her stay at a hotel, wound up in a goose's crop. The man who dropped the goose, Mr. Henry Baker, comes to reclaim his hat in response to Holmes' advertisement. Holmes drops hints about how he saved the "innards" of the goose, but Baker fails to respond to them, simply saying that he is afraid goose remains are not much use. He does, however, give Holmes valuable information, eventually leading him to the conclusive stage of his investigation, at Covent Garden. Holmes offers a fresh goose to Henry Baker, who responds with gladness and departs, whereupon Holmes tells Watson that Baker is eliminated from the suspect list as he obviously knows nothing about the carbuncle. At Covent Garden, a salesman named Breckinridge gets angry with Holmes, complaining about all the people who have pestered him about geese sold recently to the landlord of the Alpha Inn. Clearly, someone else knows that the carbuncle was in a goose and is looking for the bird.

Well, Dickens's "A Christmas Carol," of course, and Dylan Thomas's "A Child's Christmas in Wales," too, but the Sherlock Holmes story, "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle" always gives me the Christmas feels ? ????️‍♂️

CogsOfEncouragement Holmes seems to care foremost about the brain teaser. He finds satisfaction in unraveling the answer. In these short stories of not pursuing penalty for the perpetrators he always gives a list of logical reasons for doing so. It doesn‘t seem that he doesn‘t care at all, it seems he finds himself adequate judge and jury in these particular cases. He convinces Watson with his logic and I kinda trust Watson to do the right thing. 8mo
dabbe Holmes says it best: “I am not retained by the police to supply their deficiencies. If Horner were in danger it would be another thing; but this fellow will not appear against him, and the case must collapse. I suppose that I am commuting a felony, but it is just possible that I am saving a soul.“ As the world's first consulting detective, Holmes is not required to work within the constraints of the police, which was a new organization as well. 8mo
Cuilin @dabbe I loved the saving a soul line. 🫶 8mo

CogsOfEncouragement @dabbe @Cuilin Good points. Holmes is sometimes reimagined for tv as lacking in the humanity department and I feel this points to the opposite. 8mo
Cuilin @CogsOfEncouragement agreed. He sees things which others do not. 8mo
Librarybelle I loved that line, @dabbe . I agree, @CogsOfEncouragement …Holmes lays out his reasonings and does seem to make judgments as “judge and jury.” And very true about the personification of Holmes on TV…we don‘t necessarily his more humane thinking in some of these adaptations rather than in the stories. 8mo

CogsOfEncouragement Well, I sure like Watson as our narrator. He‘s necessary. I think Holmes really needs Watson in his life too. Watson is essential. 😉 We are so far removed from men dressing this way, but I had thought that possibly a man could wear an old hat for a reason, not that the hat was his only or best hat he had. Of course not the case, just a thought I had while reading. 8mo
dabbe Agree 💯 with @CogsOfEncouragement. Watson is essential. As Holmes puts it, Watson is his “Boswell.“ Watson humanizes Holmes. Holmes's deductions re: the hat are a bit far-fetched today, but back then ... maybe not. My favorite deduction is when Holmes claims Henry Baker is intelligent just because his hat is big (bigger than even Holmes's head). Phrenology was a big deal back then--now reduced to a pseudoscience. 8mo
Librarybelle I said to myself “you can tell this is the age of phrenology” when I read about the large hat size, @dabbe ! Completely agree with @CogsOfEncouragement that Watson is essential. He serves well as the narrator. 8mo

CogsOfEncouragement Goose chase! LOL I liked this one. Clever fun. The crime is definitely significant. Alas, the criminal is one who thought he had a spectacular plan but managed to blow it. 8mo
Cuilin @CogsOfEncouragement I thought this one was fun too. It‘s nice when authors don‘t take themselves too seriously and can have a little fun. 8mo
Read4life I enjoyed it, too. @CogsOfEncouragement it went from spectacular plan to plan blown spectacularly. 🤓 8mo

dabbe I also believe it's the only SH story that is a close-to-Christmas caper. A fun one with quite the comic relief! 8mo

CrystalE02 I enjoyed reading this one. I thought it was fun!!!! 8mo
Cuilin @CrystalE02 it certainly had some humorous qualities. 8mo
Cuilin @Read4life not exactly a criminal mastermind. 8mo
CatLass007 It was light-hearted enough but I still don‘t like the way Holmes just seems to know things that are not known to the reader. 8mo
Librarybelle This one was much better than the story from last week, in my opinion. It was fun and a bit light. 8mo
Cuilin @CatLass007 I understand that. I‘m one of those readers that always think they can solve the mystery themselves. So I love it when a writer provides all the clues. At least give me a chance. Lol 8mo
Cuilin @Librarybelle agreed. It‘s wonderful to see the variety in the short stories. 8mo
kelli7990 I enjoyed this story. 8mo
Aimeesue @dabbe True! It‘s one of those seasonal stories I read year after year in December. 8mo

Switching from Pratchett to British detective novels and back. This version is a radio drama and is very well made. The Sherlock stories are perfect for my commute because the last one way.
Does anybody else see Mark Gatiss in the drawing?

The gales of Storm Arwen have passed over our bit of North West England, bringing a fall of snow. Kid-me was delighted to get out for a walk while it was coming down. Adult-me is delighted that it is already melting and won't affect my work commute tomorrow. Cat-me is cosying up with The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle, a spicy sweet potato salad, and a hot Vimto. Did a glug of red wine fall into my glass? Only Holmes could say 🔎🍷

I'm late posting this because December has been out of control stressful, which wasn't helped by the fact that I decided to make a giant cake for my book club holiday party that had six distinct components and took twelve hours start to finish. But it was gooooooooooooood. Hells yeah I made those trees! Black Forest Dome Cake + the tagged short story = #bookclubbakes

I've been enjoying some Sherlock Holmes stories on serial reader lately. I've found that I don't always have the attention span for longer novels in this format, but I like reading shorter stories this way.
