The Last Unicorn
The Last Unicorn | Peter S Beagle, Peter B Gillis
Peter S. Beagle's beloved fantasy classic captured imaginations around the world, and takes on new life in this luscious, fully illustrated graphic novel adaptation. The Last Unicorn is a tale for any age about the wonders of magic, the power of love, and the tragedy of loss. The unicorn, alone in her enchanted wood, learns that she may be the last of her kind. Reluctant at first, she sets out on a journey to discover the fate of her fellow unicorns, even if it means facing the terrifying anger of the Red Bull and the malignant evil of the king who wields its power. Along the way, she'll encounter a cast of unforgettable characters, including Schmendrick the magician, the bandit Molly Grue, the noble Prince Lr, and the occasional talking butterfly. Adapted by Peter B. Gillis and lushly illustrated by Renae De Liz and Ray Dillon, The Last Unicorn is simultaneously current and timeless in this newest incarnation.

The tone of this novel is a cross between The Chronicles of Prydain and Howl's Moving Castle, with maybe a hint of Tiffany Aching, but it doesn't hit me like those do. The tale is enjoyable, but the characters are a bit too changeable for me. I like characters that change over time, but these do less evolving and more flip-flopping. Some scenes are excellent, like Mommy Fortuna's Midnight Carnival, and really make me wish I liked this book more.

I remember, as a kid, taking the movie out from the library repeatedly. I never got more than 15-20 minutes in because I'd start sobbing at the idea of the last, lonely unicorn. My mom finally told me I wasn't allowed to borrow it anymore. 🙃

I didn't realize when I borrowed the book that it was the graphic novel, but in the end I'm so glad. Beautiful artwork to tell a beautiful tale.

And this was my #BookSpin for this month! @TheAromaofBooks

I ordered this book (specifically the 40th anniversary edition) from eBay for my daughter's birthday recently. The seller sent me the current edition I could have bought for cheaper on Amazon. 😡 Do any of you wonderful Littens know where I could get my hands on this version, for a reasonable price? I've been Googling and trolling eBay for a month now, but I can't find it. My daughter is a super fan and I would really love to get this for her. TIA

GondorGirl Maybe try AbeBooks? 3y

😏 This got a resounding “no” from both kids as a read aloud after I read the blurb. I‘m not surprised really because fantasy isn‘t something they typically go for, but I thought I‘d try since people seem to love it. However, son has expressed willingness to try HP, so there‘s that!

JanuarieTimewalker13 I‘m not a big fantasy person and I enjoyed this one...plus it doesn‘t drag on, and on, bc it‘s a short book...it worked for me. 6y
Tamra @JanuarieTimewalker13 it might work for me, just not for them. Shoot. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa It‘s a tough one, I read it after I watched the cartoon as a kid. But it‘s a bit sad, which makes it tough even if I‘ll always have nostalgic memories there. But yay for HP! 6y
See All 6 Comments
JanuarieTimewalker13 Oh, well, you can read it on your own one day! 6y
Chittavrtti It‘s a quest story, more fairy tale than ,what I consider, true fantasy. The scene in the tower with the talking skull is hilarious. The Red Bull is scarier in the reading than in the film. 6y

I‘m not sure how many times I‘ve read this old favorite. I love it every single time. This was the book I chose for my long term postal bookclub. In reading through the notebook I was surprised how many hadn‘t heard of the book or movie! I always assumed it was just as well known as LOTR or Harry Potter! In my family it‘s as loved as The Wizard of Oz!

I‘m glad to have been able to share it with so many, and happy most enjoyed reading it!

TheKidUpstairs I loved this movie as a kid (I seem to remember crying a lot), but haven't watched it in ages. And I've never read the book. I'll have to remedy that! 6y

My #OwlPost book has returned home! It‘s been over a year (2 years? Help me out, I don‘t remember...) and it has traveled the country. I‘m going to reread it, starting tonight, before I read the journal with all of your notes. This postal bookclub has been so much fun.

Soubhiville @LibrarianRyan which group are you in? I have to say, the larger groups seem to almost always run into problems. I think the #CoverToCover group is the only one which hasn‘t had any real issues. The smaller 4 person groups seem to work out much better. Maybe because of shorter commitment? 6y
Soubhiville @ElizabethAndino I‘m so glad to hear that! I‘m going to try to resist looking in the journal until I finish my reread. I can‘t wait to see what everyone thought though! 6y
CareBear I‘m so glad it made it home safely! It was one of my favorites too. 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz Wowwww! How come it took 2 yrs to get back to you? How does this work? If you don't mind me asking...Your caption has made me really intrigued! 6y
Soubhiville @Jee_HookedOnBookz our postal club had around 20 members. Each person chose a book and a journal for notes to be recorded by other members. The books traveled every month one spot around a huge circle, so after about 20 months, my book has visited 20 readers to be read and discussed. And it just made it back home 😊 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz Wowwwwww!!!! That's way tooooo cool!!!! Is there like a next round? Or it's already closed to 20 members? 6y
Hooked_on_books You‘re welcome! I think it was 2.5 years ago that we started. Time flies, eh? We are still in negotiations for the property, but I‘m pretty sure it‘s going to happen. 6y
LibrarianRyan @Soubhiville it‘s not owlpost but my #travelingbook. A litten who is frequently on will not send the book. She has told me at least 6 times in the last 9 months that she is going to send it. And post proof. I used to get told “I‘m sick” which I totally forgive it happens. Now I‘m told “I have no money” but then she posts pretty big hook hauls of new hot titles. It‘s frustrating. 🤬 6y
Soubhiville @Jee_HookedOnBookz you have to join a group at the beginning. This one is just ending. 6y
Soubhiville @Jee_HookedOnBookz I‘d recommend looking for #lmpbc- Litsy Markup Postal Book Club. I think those are groups of 4 people, which is way more manageable and only lasts 4 months. You‘ll see folks looking for new members pretty regularly that way. As far as the larger groups go, there tend to be a lot of issues with a commitment that long. I started several big groups, but I won‘t be doing it again for that reason. 6y
wen4blu It was a great choice! 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz @Soubhiville thank you so much for the detailed info, Soubhi! I'll look for #lmpbc Coz I really like this idea of sharing notes and thoughts on the same book and then sending it all back to the original sender/owner of the book! ❤️❤️❤️ 6y
