Hours | Michael Cunningham
A daring, deeply affecting third novel by the author of "A Home at the End of the World "and "Flesh and Blood." In "The Hours," Michael Cunningham, widely praised as one of the most gifted writers of his generation, draws inventively on the life and work of Virginia Woolf to tell the story of a group of contemporary characters struggling with the conflicting claims of love and inheritance, hope and despair. The narrative of Woolf's last days before her suicide early in World War II counterpoints the fictional stories of Samuel, a famous poet whose life has been shadowed by his talented and troubled mother, and his lifelong friend Clarissa, who strives to forge a balanced and rewarding life in spite of the demands of friends, lovers, and family. Passionate, profound, and deeply moving, this is Cunningham's most remarkable achievement to date.

I thought I‘d love this book - but i didn‘t ! It was difficult to engage with - I lost interest and probably didn‘t read it in enough detail and as a result found myself confused over who was who . It follows three women‘s lives over several decades one being Virginia Woolf - it‘s written very well - but not for me I‘m afraid .

This prose is so poetic, feelings of melancholy and sadness linger, but in the best sense possible.
In 1923 Virginia Woolf begins to right her novel about Clarissa Dalloway. In 1949 Laura Brown reads Virginia Woolf. In the 1990s Clarissa Vaughan is preparing a party for her former lover. Three women in three different timelines share a subtle connection which slowly reveals itself in key moments of their lives.

This book is beautifully written, as Michael Cunningham can do, but I just didn't care much about it. I figured out the connection early and so it mostly dragged for me. Still glad I finally read it though. It has been on my shelf for a long time. It was #96 for #Roll100. @PuddleJumper

The story is told over the course of a single day, in the tradition of Mrs Dalloway – and, in that spirit, I read The Hours in a single sitting. It‘s short enough to make that not-too-onerous an undertaking, and I reckon it‘s the best way to do it, if you have the time and capacity. For my 1998 published book I have chosen this title. I‘ve been a long time fan of Virginia Woolf and I found this book to be very good and an interesting take on Mrs Dalloway. While sad and heartbreaking it was also engaging and all of the characters spoke to me in one form or another. #19822022 @Librarybelle

5-21-21: My 52nd finished book of 2021! I decided to reread this book because it‘s been awhile and it‘s one of my favorites. One day in the life of 3 different women at 3 different times. Virginia Woolf, Laura Brown and Clarissa Vaughn. Distinctly different but all eternally linked together. What starts as 3 separate stories becomes entwined. It‘s a beautiful book and movie. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👍🏼📖#️⃣5️⃣2️⃣

I watched the film a few years ago & it remains a favourite but it‘s influenced how I read the book as I could just see every character as they are in the film. It also sticks very close to the book.

It‘s such a clever idea for a novel & is written perfectly, you really do get inside all 3 of the women‘s minds. The theme of outward vs inner reality is captured brilliantly. It‘s got a sort of rhythm to the writing that captures you. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book won the 1999 Pulitzer and was made into a very good movie which I remember loving, many years ago.

Cunningham‘s writing is crystal clear and devastating. I loved his writing as much as Wallace Stegner‘s earlier this year. It‘s a very short novel - under 200 pages my copy - and it‘s a dive into one day in the life of three different women - ⬇️

Centique Mrs Woolf (Virginia Woolf), Mrs Brown, a 1950s housewife and Mrs Dalloway, a 1990s woman nicknamed after VW‘s book. So beautiful and so sad. TW for depression 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 (edited) 4y

Centique @ClairesReads I have to buy my own copy now, it‘s one I need to own 😍 4y
Centique @eeclayton so so good, definitely more interiority than the movie could depict. 4y
Centique @SamAnne he‘s got another book that‘s been made into a movie that I want to track down 4y
Reggie I remember the movie, and how I felt the message was to choose life. And the really lovely piano score in the background. Hmm maybe I‘ll try the book. Nice review. 4y
Centique @Reggie it‘s interesting, I felt the same about the movie (and the music and cinematography was 👌) but the book painted depression so vividly that suicide seemed an understandable option. I‘d be so interested in what you think if you read it 😘💕 4y

I‘m honestly not sure how I feel about this one. The book itself is incredibly well written as the author seamlessly flows from one story line into the next. And while I can empathize with the almost out of body, “who‘s life is this?” feeling, I couldn‘t quite manage a deep connection to any of the characters. Mrs. Dalloway is still on my TBR list. #bookcrossing #movievsbook

Stunning. Beautiful. Haunting. This book delves deeply into what it has meant to be a woman in society over the last century. It brings to life the suffocating horror of the at times seemingly trivial and mundane expectations of a wife, mother, woman.

I was feeling overwhelmed and overwrought yesterday evening when I pulled this book off the shelf. I‘m so glad I did. This is a work of brilliance and empathy and, despite all rational evidence, I don‘t believe for a second that it was written by a man. Cunningham walks a darkened corridor, the walls a timeline of horror and pain, but illuminates only the floor in its ordinary reality. This book is tactful & poignant & an honor to Virginia Woolf.

Pickpick

I adore this book!
I could call it an accomplished tribute to "Mrs Dalloway" but that makes it sound dull and sterile when it is anything but. It's clever, yes, but more than that it is beautiful, humane and moving. Also, it's to Michael Cunningham's credit that I lost myself in all three women's inter-connected stories and wasn't impatient to get back to the Virginia Woolf chapters.

BarbaraBB Me too 😍 7y
AmyG I loved this book, too. Have you seen the movie? Meryl Streep is in it and as always, is wonderful. 7y
quietlycuriouskate @AmyG I have. Actually it was the film that led me to seek out the book at the library the first time I read it. Now I have my own copy. 😊 7y

"when she glanced over at this new book on her nightstand, stacked atop the one she finished last night, she reached for it automatically, as if reading were the singular and obvious first task of the day..."

Have you ever found yourself wanting to tell a fictional character about the wonderful reading community we have here?

SandyW 😂 Never thought of that, but I have found myself on the hunt for some of the books that are mentioned in books! 7y

tpixie @Bianca of course not! Locals don't site see in their own towns!! I just remember thinking this man planted tiny little oak trees with a vision of what it would look like and then probably never got to see the beautiful canopy the oak trees made down his driveway! (edited) 8y
