Passengers | John Marrs
89 posts | 80 read | 94 to read
You're riding in your self-driving car when suddenly the doors lock, the route changes and you have lost all control. Then, a mysterious voice tells you, "You are going to die." Just as self-driving cars become the trusted, safer norm, eight people find themselves in this terrifying situation, including a faded TV star, a pregnant young woman, an abused wife fleeing her husband, an illegal immigrant, a husband and wife, and a suicidal man. From cameras hidden in their cars, their panic is broadcast to millions of people around the world. But the public will show their true colors when they are asked, "Which of these people should we save?...And who should we kill first?"

This was crazy. I was riveted through most of the book. Loved the theme of algorithms making ethical decisions, or rather the people responsible for them. Manipulation from people in power or with a political or financial agenda. Just really crazy, probably too close to the truth stuff. PLUS the whole soap opera with the secret lives of the Passengers. The ending rushed a bit, but it was quite good.

I have roughly five million thriller/mysteries on my TBR, so if none of these click, it's not hard to find some more options 😂 But here are a few that I keep meaning to get to - I've enjoyed other books by each of these authors. Let me know what you think @Jerdencon @robinb @bookandbedandtea

bookandbedandtea I've read the Marrs (loved it!) and the McIntosh but the other two are new to me and sound good. 5mo
Jerdencon I haven‘t read any - all sound good. 5mo
robinb Haven‘t read any! 😊👍 5mo

TheAromaofBooks @bookandbedandtea @Jerdencon @robinb - I think I'm going to go with the Lisa Jewell book for this round then - even her books that I've read and didn't find as good as the others have still been compelling reads, so I'm hoping this one will be a win 😂 5mo
bookandbedandtea @TheAromaofBooks Sounds great! I agree that I've generally been happy with her books so can probably expect this to be good. 5mo
robinb Great! Shockingly enough, I‘ve never read a Jewell book. 😱😱🤯 Why do I feel sort of embarrassed to admit that??! LOL 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5mo
Jerdencon I‘ve read a couple and they are good page turners - looking forward to this one 5mo
TheAromaofBooks @robinb - I was late to the party as well and still have a lot of her backlist books to read. She's one of those authors that I get done and think, “Wait... that kinda didn't make sense...“ but her pacing is so good that I rarely notice when I'm actually reading 😂 5mo
robinb @TheAromaofBooks 😂😂😂 I totally understand you!! Sometimes it almost feels like certain authors throw in a BUNCH of convoluted stuff to steer you off track of…”Hmmm…I‘m not sure that‘s feasible/possible/accurate”. And my poor brain just usually gives up and goes with the flow. 🤯🤯🤯 5mo

Mehso-so

The premise was very interesting. I‘m in minority here with So-So rating, but I couldn‘t wait for it to end….I think it just could‘ve been edited down a bit and the characters annoyed me. It lacked “heart” to me, or it may just be me at this time. I‘m not sure…it followed a book I really enjoyed, which was published in the 90s and I think that may have played into it. Maybe it was just too cold and futuristic for me.

Wow! This was an excellent thriller.

I loved the story, the characters, the surprises as the story unfolds, and the ending.

Yes, the action and suspense are great, but this book will also make you question your own morality and how you judge others.

Highly recommend this one.

What a ride, literally. This is the dystopian thriller I‘ve been waiting for! Everything seems so plausible in this book where 8 passengers of completely self-driven cars get caught inside them and are told they are being driven into collision with each other. A hacker is telling so and involves the government. All of this is to be followed worldwide. So many twists, good characters and witty dialogue. Read it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My second read by John Marrs and I loved it almost as much as the The One. Driverless cars creep me out anyway, but the idea that one could be hijacked when I‘m a passenger is downright terrifying. The chapters are fast-paced and short, and there are great twists throughout. I thought about this book anytime I wasn‘t reading it. It‘s just a lot of fun to read.

I‘m on hold for another Marrs book from my library. I can hardly wait. #rushathon

Just started Honeybees and Distant Thunder and it is very promising. Next will be The Passengers, a dystopian/SF book and a favorite of @Dreesreads who I follow on Instagram since she is unfortunately no longer active on Litsy (I keep hoping she‘ll return though!). And another #booker23 read, which @squirrelbrain and @TheKidUpstairs didn‘t like at all so I have low expectations.

A very fun thriller, a loose follow up to The One (not essential to the read first but I would recommend). In a not distant future UK where self driving cars are becoming common place, a group of unrelated strangers are trapped and riding towards death. Though I guessed the twist, it was still a fun, dark ride (pun intended). 4⭐️ #roll100 read done! #bookspinbingo

Excellent book that deals with themes of AI (is it really all its cracked up to be); politics (who decides who is worth saving); social media/reality tv (are others people lives entertainment). Only thing I did not enjoy was Libby's intense love of Jude after meeting once and talking/kissing at a bar - the story would work with their meeting/liking each other and more intense feelings developing later -

🎧📚 Did you read The One? There are a few callbacks in this book.

I don‘t want to spoil the story. There‘s a reason why this 3 year old book has 10 people waiting for me to finish it on Libby. I‘m going right into his 2020 release! I like the author‘s style!!

Libby is called to jury duty and the thrill begins. Multiple people are locked in their self driving cars and as the story progresses their secrets are revealed.

8 autonomous cars have been hacked w the hacker promising The Passengers won't survive the morning. It's terrifying in its plausibility. It's a large cast but I found them interesting &easy to keep track of.I'm already a bit suspicious of technology so this book added fuel to that fire but kept me utterly entertained the whole time. I enjoyed the nods to his previous book The One & I'm determined to keep my Level 1 car for the foreseeable future!

This book provides edge-of-your-seat tension. Everyone, even the victims, has something to hide. I liked the ending and found the book to be well-written. As a TW, there are a few graphic scenes, but no gore fests. I didn't find them to be extreme, but others might.

5/5 stars! I was enthralled with this book within the first chapter! Nice short chapters and I cared about the characters so much that sometimes I was seriously mad at the book! I had to take a half day break half way threw the book though because I feel like it was a very heavy read. I cried multiple times during this book. There are spoilers for his book The One in this book. So make sure to read The One first!
