I finished this long audiobook. It was just another history before Game of Thrones. I did enjoy listening to the audiobook. I rated this book a 3 out of 5 stars

August 10 #BookBinge Involves Dragon 🐉 This had lots of dragon fights. There is nothing like the dragons in this story. @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks
This is a history book written in-world by one of the archmaesters of the Citadel in Westeros. It covers nearly the first 150 years of Targaryen rule, summarizing the life and reign of each king and their families, starting with Aegon‘s Conquest and ending with the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.
With many ambiguous elements around what might‘ve happened behind closed doors, this book is truly enthralling for fans of Westerosi lore.
New library book came in! 🙌
Best. Bookrest. Ever.

I was surprised by this series stat! Also I‘m still salty about the fact that this is only Vol. 1 of 2 (and who the f knows when GRRM is going to finish another book).
Some of the other series I started, finished, or revisited: Red Rising, Infernal Devices, Last Hours, ACOTAR, Saga, STEMinista, Lore Olympus, Heartstopper, Cormoran Strike, The Atlas, etc.
Watching episode 9 by the light of the Christmas tree.
Pistachio 🐱 First of his name, King of the Isthmus, Protector of the backyard, joining me for tea and re-reading tagged book now that my binge watch has ended for season 1 House of the Dragon.
Storygraph October Wrap-up!
I finished 9 books during October, including the tagged book, which was my highest rated at 4 stars.
Moods skewed towards funny and dark (usually my top mood is emotional), due to the books I choose for #Scarathlon.
Audiobook time was much higher than pages read due to finishing the 26 hour Fire & Blood and 19 hour False Witness.
For November, I am focusing on comfort reads and #BOTM backlog books.
Readers should be aware that this is written in the format of a history compiled during Robert Baratheon‘s reign, so it isn‘t a straightforward narrative like ASOIAF series. Also it‘s only volume 1 of 2, so you are only getting the first half of the Targaryen history of Westeros. I did enjoy the audiobook since the narration by Simon Vance is great, but it will feel incomplete given this volume ends shortly after the Dance of the Dragons. 4🐉

I have had this on my shelf since publication but was only inspired to read it after watching the first few episodes of House of the Dragon.
I enjoy the worlds Martin creates - he writes strong women, nuanced characters and is sympathetic to the role of mother, queen and wife. He also writes a great deal of sexual and physical violence.
I found this, like the Game of Thrones books, entertaining and a little addictive
I think I need to come to the realization that this type of fantasy just isn‘t for me. Or rather, GRRM isn‘t for me. My brain was on auto pilot trying to finish this. There are just too many characters and houses to keep track of that it all becomes headache-inducing.

Without going into spoilers for those who haven't seen it, anyone else find the pacing of HoD incredibly weird? We are now nearly halfway through season 1 & I literally have no idea where the story is heading. Plus the significant time jumps between episodes, yet the characters have literally all of the same concerns and worries? It feels very disjointed to me.
I'll admit that I went into this without realizing it wasn't written like the GOT books. I started and was a bit confused, but intrigued. Once I got that Martin was writing this like a history book I was all in. 😁 All of the similar names do become a bit maddening, but the family tree helps.
Any fan of this world needs to read this. It's so detailed and informative. And the illustrations are gorgeous.

All I can say is wow! I have so many thoughts about this book but I cant really share them all. So I will say...
Game of thrones=House of the dragon + dragons. It's the same story but different people with dragons. It seems that history will alway repeat itself. It was very confusing cause it seems they all have the same name, but gory and still entertaining all the way thru. My only annoyance is that this new show is gonna be another one of those
Wow, this is a chunkster. Very detailed with lots of characters. The family tree certainly helped. The authors imagination and world building are epic in scope. They could make 100 tv shows out of this book alone. Excited to watch the new show next week.
Would anyone else like to join us on a very low key buddy read on this one? Maybe a few chapters a day and discussion every 2-3 days? I feel like I will read this one sooner as a group 😊
Canceled for now…

Rhaenyra Targaryen has my heart
“From there Aegon the Dragon would rule his realm, holding court from a great metal seat made from the melted, twisted, beaten, and broken blades of all his fallen foes, a perilous seat that would soon be known through all the world as the Iron Throne of Westeros.”
“And Orys Baratheon he proclaimed to be “my shield, my stalwart, my strong right hand.” Thus Baratheon is reckoned by the maesters the first King‘s Hand.”
Enjoying it so far. Needed to make notes to follow the people and places. Slow, careful read.
This was by far the best book to come from the author! It was so engaging & unputdownable. It reads beautifully like a true history text & most of the characters are really interesting. My only grievance is the choice of the names Elmo Tully & Kermit Tully, which did spoil the effect somewhat at being a true fantasy epic. Not sure what possessed him to choose such names but not his best decision. Overall definitely one I recommend to others.

Enjoy!
I'm a little bit conflicted about this book. On the one hand, it was very interesting to read about the Targaryen history. On the other, it was extremely confusing to read about a couple having 14 children, 4 of them named Aegon, and only 3 living to be adults. It was also sort of dry...even the telling of someone being tortured was rather uninteresting.
This book was long! If you are a fan of Game of Thrones, it is a must read. It is a long history of the Targariens, lots of Lord's names to get through, lots of gore and death. Every time a dragon died I cried. I know it's ridiculous, but they didn't do anything wrong lol. This is Hard Fantasy #NSR221 @Nessavamusic
1. Tagged although i started it in december and listened to it.
2. Depends on the author. Outlander no, classic literature yes
