Mercy Thompson's life is not exactly normal. Her next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she's fixing a VW bus for a vampire. But then, Mercy isn't exactly normal herself.

I read the first couple of Mercy Thompson books all the way back in 2009 - and randomly seeing a review for the newest book the other day made me wonder about it - and Libby came through with the audiobook! So it was meant to be! I remembered almost nothing and had an absolute blast reacquainting myself with it all! With any luck - I‘ll stick with it this time round.

#TBRTarot (Choose a book… written by an author whose first name begins with a P) #ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 I was going to listen to the newest book in the Mercy Thompson series (book 14) but when I started, the character mentions things that had happened in previous novels, and I couldn‘t remember them. So I decided on a re-listen. I enjoyed it so much! I remembered all events that took place, but I didn‘t remember that they all took (cont)⬇️

South Carolina #BookHaul ! Two books that have been on my TBR for a while, and a book to share with the nibling!

CatLass007 Did you get these books in South Carolina or did you buy these books to take to South Carolina on vacation with you? Patricia Briggs has written an excellent urban fantasy series, with visits to other parts of the world of Mercy Thompson. I go back-and-forth between whether Patricia Briggs‘s books are my favorite urban fantasy or whether Jim Butcher‘s Harry Dresden books are my favorite urban fantasy. 1y
BookmarkTavern @CatLass007 I‘m currently in South Carolina! I visited a tiny little used bookstore on Pawleys Island! I‘ve heard good things about Mercy Thompson and I‘m excited to get to it. (edited) 1y
CatLass007 @ozma.of.oz I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. 1y
CatLass007 My only complaint has ever been that the cover art always shows Mercy covered in tattoos but the books mention only one tattoo. The cover art is great though. Just a minor quibble. 1y

Such a tough question! I think I‘d choose the world of Mercy Thompson. It‘s like our world but with werewolves, fae, vampires, and magic.

Or maybe London Below. Or The Library of the Unwritten.

Or for something completely different, either the Heart of Gold or Alderaan (before it was destroyed, obviously) or Deverry.

It‘s too hard to choose! What I need is a multi-world portal. 😆

BookmarkTavern So many excellent picks! Thank you for posting! 2y
mushrooms.and.ink Probably either Medora (The Medoran Chronicles, Lynette Noni) or Wenderall (The Prison Healer, Lynette Noni). Maybe the world that Leigh Bardugo Created. 2y

I borrowed this one from Libby on a whim. The cover doesn't really appeal to me, but I'd heard good things about the series, and I'm so glad I gave it a try. I'm about halfway in and really enjoying it.

So, I'd love to know if you like this series, what other series do you recommend?

ElizaMarie @AkashaVampie - Do you have any recommendations for her? 3y

ShyBookOwl I'm not a fan of these covers either, but also wanted to give the series a try. I've attempted it twice with no luck, so maybe it's not for me... or maybe my timing has just been off 🤷🏽‍♀️ 3y
PuddleJumper My friend recommended this series and the Kate Daniel series by Ilona Andrews to me. I've only read one of the Mercy Thompson books and I can't decide if I liked it or not 3y
Chrissyreadit I liked this series a lot. I also liked the October Daye series and Parasol Protectorate series. All supernatural fun. I just started The Slaughtered Lamb Bookstore and Bar and that one is pretty good too. 3y
EclecticBookLover I liked it. I found it after re-reading the Sookie Stackhouse books. I wanted something paranormal with a bit of humor. This worked for what I was looking for. I'm on book ten, bit so far 4 and were high points. I listened to them which worked for me, too. 3y
catsuit_mango I like those, the parasol protectorate by Gail Carrier and the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch 3y
Traci1 @Chrissyreadit I'll look those up, thanks 😊 3y
Traci1 @EclecticBookLover I think I like that it reminds me of the Sookie books. I've reread those so many times, and probably will again, but it's nice to have something similar but new. 3y

The first in the Mercedes Thompson series, which I am looking forward to reading (for the first time). Mercy is a mechanic and also a walker who can turn into a coyote, but she‘s not the only supernatural being around. Her former boss is a gremlin and her neighbor is a hot werewolf. She accidentally gets herself involved in werewolf pack issues, and that‘s not even getting into the local vampires. Excited to see where the series goes.

My favourite mercy verse characters would run a great camp!
Mercy herself would be baking orange chocolate brownies and telling ghost stories around campfires
Adam would be teaching self defence and sport games
Warren would be playing up his cowboy nature with some lassoing of objects
Stefan would be part of the hardest game of hide and seek
And Jess and Kyle would be doing camp makeovers! Funky hair check! Stylish clothes check!

1. Patricia Briggs is one of my fave urban fantasy authors.

2. I love that UF books are set in cities & places I‘ve been or could visit but have some sort of magic (wizards, witches, weres, vampires, far, etc.).

3. Somewhere in South America, like Buenos Aires, Bogotá, or Lima.

Larkken I love Patricia Briggs! For a South American UF, have you heard of Lobizona? 4y

So it turns out I've been thinking that I strongly disliked this book, because I had it confused with the first book of the author's OTHER werewolf series, Alpha & Omega, which I read years ago and found too romance-heavy. Oops! 😬 Since I'm always on the prowl for a good werewolf book, I'm going to try out this one now. Wish me luck!

The first book of the Mercy Thompson series! 🐺

Okay this just made it into the 'Pick' category because the storyline was weak but the characters were terrific and I'm thinking..maybe it's a character building novel to start off the series?

Anyway, I'm definitely interested to see where this goes and I'll continue with it. 👍

Riveted_Reader_Melissa The characters stay great, and grow over the novels, the plot is always fun but secondary. 4y
TheNeverendingTBR @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I kind of got that feeling, there didn't seem to be any plot of direction - with the first installment anyway. 4y
ShelleyBooksie Love this series so much 4y
Shmemilina There‘s definitely more plot in the later ones! 4y

So in re-reading this I forgot how much I loved this book for a few different reasons.

People will want to debate this, but I love how normal Mercy is, her job and life are not out of the ordinary which is relatable so when the extraordinary happens, it happens and is the start if a chain reaction of events that Briggs set up nicely to sucker me back for book 2 because I want to catch up to the series.

Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs

I love all of Patricia Briggs‘s books & will pre-order anything she writes. But Mercy is my absolute fave. Mercedes, a kick-ass Volkswagen mechanic living in the Tri-Cities area of Washington, is part Native American. That heritage has gifted her with the ability to take the form of a coyote at will. Plus this world is just fun with fey, werewolves, vampires, & more.

Mercy is a fantastic character - I definitely want to hear more of her story and will be looking out for the next in the series. A good amount of intrigue and drama, and well written. I was dubious about the first person narrative at first but got used to it very quickly.

Litsy NEEDS an option between So-So and Pick!! This novel was a fast read that kept me engaged and I‘m going to hit up the library to get the next in the series. It wasn‘t my favorite style of writing, but I quite enjoyed Mercy‘s character development and I think further reading will get me hooked. I love fantasy and magical realism, so this was a good “hi-carb” read: tasty, easily digested, and not too dense and filling for quick consumption. 😁

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I quiet enjoy this series, even as it continues to develop. I‘d also suggest Alpha & Omega, a short story that takes place after this book where Bran sends his son Charles to investigate the troubled pack. 5y
