Broken Harbor: A Novel | Tana French
An addictive thriller fromNew York Times bestseller and the acclaimed author of In the Woods and Faithful PlaceTana Frenchs rise can only be called meteoric. Starting with her award-winning debut, French has scored four consecutive New York Times bestsellers and established herself as one of the top names in the genre. Broken Harbor is quintessential Frencha damaged hero, an unspeakable crime, and an intricately plotted mysterynestled in a timely examination of lives shattered by the global economic downturn. Mick Scorcher Kennedy always brings in the killer. Always. Thats why hes landed this high-profile triple homicide. At first, he thinks its going to be simple, but the murder scene holds terrifying memories for Scorcher. Memories of something that happened there back when he was a boy.Tana French's newest novel,The Secret Place, will be published by Viking on September 2nd, 2014.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Dublin Murder Squad #4. A family is murdered in a failed luxury community. Tons of unfinished and crumbling homes. “Scorcher” and his potential new partner are on the case. Tana French is a master storyteller, but I didn‘t love the resolution here. The journey was so well done, though. I was rapt.

High tension, excellent plotting and bonus of tandem storyline about the main investigator‘s family. I was loving this one til near the end-the resolution was a bit of a let down. Detective Kennedy is teamed up with a rookie to solve the murder of a family with two small children. Revealing too many details would spoil the plot. Some minor characters were too stereotypical and some scenes could have been cut but French is an excellent crime writer. I enjoyed reading this mystery, loved the character development of Kennedy and the way French deals with the murder of children (which had almost made me bail).

The 4th outing in the Dublin series was a cracker and the storytelling gets better + better. In this Mikey Kennedy is a lead detective back from a divorce + teamed with a rookie to investigate what appears to be a domestic family killing. With a troubled history + problematic sister the bk brilliantly mirrors Kennedy breaking down with the victim father's slide into paranoia. With the rookie Ritchie being morally judgemental a great climax ensues

Ruthiella Your the second Litten I follow who has just read this title. The end of this book with Kennedy and his relationship with the rookie just slayed me. I was so invested and when the turnaround happened, it broke my heart! 3y
andrew61 @Ruthiella yes , I liked that the author was willing to throw sympathetic characters to the wolves which with individual stories she has capacity to be brutal with her storytelling. Great series. 3y

I am slowly making my way through Tana French‘s Dublin Murder Squad series. This one tells the story of Mick “Scorcher” Kennedy who is teamed up with a rookie to investigate a triple murder in a housing development on the decline during the recession. French centers each book in the series on a different character and really pulls you in to their backstory, adding a layer of depth that is not seen in many other mysteries I‘ve read.

Many things can be said about 2020 and one is that this is the year I stopped saying that I don‘t really read mysteries. This series is a huge part of why. Scorcher has a new partner and a new high profile case. Three members of a family are murdered and the fourth is in the hospital but this isn‘t just a whodunnit. This is the fourth book and one that made me sad in ways I wasn‘t expecting with all of the loneliness and good intentions.

mom2bugnbee I'm with you! I always said that I wasn't big on mysteries & I have found that to be not true! 4y
readordierachel I've aways said that too. I remember reading the first book in this series several years ago. Maybe I need to explore the rest. 4y
Jas16 @readordierachel I liked the first book but have liked the following books more. I am glad I figured out the type of mysteries I like but I still don‘t think thrillers are for me. 4y

I wanted to get back on the #readingenvysummerreading challenge (to finish a series!) and decided to start with book 4 of this series as recommended by BookRiot. (I read In the Woods back in 2014.) A family is found murdered and Scorcher is working with a new partner, on a case in a coastal town that holds negative memories for him. ⤵️

ReadingEnvy A recession has put people out of work and left the housing development where the crime occurred unfinished, and the entire novel feels pretty bleak.French is a skilled crime writer who understands how people communicate beyond words, and how much is left unsaid. Luckily she lets Scorcher have that ability too. 4y

This fourth installment of the Dublin Murder Squad series features Mick Kennedy from book three. As you would expect he‘s a more complex man than we‘d been led to believe, and this case - a father and two children are killed, wife in critical condition - gets under his skin like none before. As beautifully written and psychologically intense as all Tana French books are.

The function of a mystery story, most of the time, is what "Scorcher" (I can't take that nickname seriously) claims his function as a detective is in this book: to create an ordered world out of chaos. To reassure the audience that there are simple answers.

I can get on board with that sometimes, but I think what I like about French's books is that they don't do it. They're mysteries with complicated, messy endings, not always the one you want.

craftysilicate This is one where I don't really agree with the protagonist on a lot of things (I don't think I'm supposed to, but if I were I still wouldn't) but still mostly sympathize and even when I don't I at least understand where he's coming from. That's another thing I appreciate, because a lot of detective fiction doesn't have as much depth as it wants to. (Okay, a lot of fiction in general, but you know what I mean.) 5y

This was an interesting one, because I found the main character so unlikeable, and I think I was supposed to. Also, it took me a long time to get a grasp on what was going on with the crime. What happens if you follow all the rules, do all the right things yet the bad tides still hit you? French weaves a melancholy tale of the sacrifices that people make; things they do for love, and out of need. While this is absorbing, I find it not as solidly good as Faithful Place, which is my favourite so far. I like that she portrays her characters flawed and long-suffering, and probes into the minds of the suspects, victims and investigators.
