My reading theme for 2024 seems to be revisiting & finishing series - just where my reading whims have taken me. This is the 3rd book in French‘s Dublin Murder Squad. Each book takes on a new protagonist from the Dublin Squad - this time it‘s Frank Mackey - and boy does he have some emotional baggage! A body turns up and it upends a number of things in Frank‘s past. Great to get immersed into a dysfunctional family when its done so well ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Book 3 in the #DublinMurderSquad series by #TanaFrench was another engaging mystery. LOVE how she takes a character from previous book to be the narrator in the next. Keeps the series fresh and interesting.
Faithful Place tackles Frank‘s backstory. I didn‘t love him in Likeness but this did an excellent job of showing us who he really is and care about him.
Also fun to be introduced here to the narrator of the next in the series😉

A reread of a favorite - this time via audio. I think Tana French‘s entire murder squad series is stunning, but to me, this one is the best. The tragic romance, the complex family dynamics, the layered emotions, the beautiful writing! It‘s mesmerizing. She doesn‘t simply create characters; they feel like real, breathing people whose story unfolds before your eyes, shattering your heart in the process. 🎧

I‘m feeling well enough today to at least sit up in bed and cross stitch while listening to my audiobooks, so that‘s definite progress! I guessed the ending pretty early on, but that in no way detracted from the book. The narrator did a fantastic job and Tana French‘s writing is superb!

Such a good series. I really enjoyed Frank Mackey's POV. Audio narrator was very good - almost too good at the characters who are meant to be grating - but that made it a more immersive experience. 😆

Some of you may know I am a big fan of Tana French and the Dublin Murder Squad series. Many have citied ‘The Likeness‘ and ‘Broken Harbour‘ as their favourites but mine is the tagged book. Gripping, well written, great dialogues, bleak and utterly realistic, and gives a good look at life in modern Ireland. And Frank Mackey is by far the most interesting character in the Murder Squad. 👌

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Frank and Rosie were set to run away together, but she never showed, leaving him behind for a new life. Now, two decades later, a long-forgotten suitcase turns up. That‘s all I can give you. No one does a slow burn quite like Tana French!

If anyone isn't sure how generational trauma works this book explains it well. Francis was aware from a young age that getting away from his family was essential and he succeeded, ultimately becoming a cop. But his GF who was supposed to go with him never showed and he's never gotten over it. 22 years later her suitcase and then her remains turn up in a derelict building & Frank is reluctantly drawn back into his family (and neighborhood) drama.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • Wish it was 100 pages shorter but still enjoyed.

I‘m really getting sucked into this series. Holy dysfunctional family! in this one, but it seemed realistic and was engrossing. I‘m a little sad that there were no references to characters in previous books, but still a good story and mystery.

Tana French is fast becoming one of my favourite authors... another great sport in the Dublin Murder Squad series... I enjoy how the narrator is someone different each time, so you slowly start to get a richer picture of Dublin life in each book 😁

My favorite book of the Dublin murder squad series. Frank Mackey returns home to his dysfunctional family after a shocking discovery. The plot line of this story is incredible. Just when you think you have it all figured out, you realize you do not. French does a wonderful job building the characters and pulls you right into their lives. I'm excited to check out the next book in this great series.

Best of the Dublin murder squad so far in this story of Frank mackey having to come to terms with revisiting his highly dysfunctional family after 22 years estrangement. The reason he returns draws out ghosts from his first love and historic family conflicts . Frank is a troubled character and the story is brilliantly told. The third book in the series and my favorite so far. I love getting books about characters we have met before and already have preconceived notions about. I instantly forgot about how little I cared for Frank in the previous book and was riveted to the story of him being forced to face his past including his family and what happened with his first love.

I love the way this author writes. The mystery plots are always good, but they are also always secondary to the setting and the characters. It‘s a relief to see them resolve, but reading about how the characters behave along the way is the real draw.

Such a fan of the Dublin Murder Squad and Tana French‘s approach to the series. While these can be enjoyed as stand alone reads, I‘ve enjoyed keeping pace with the squad as the series develops...the little insights to the next book‘s “lead” from the current. This novel added depth to Frank Mackey that I didn‘t expect while reading The Likeness.

The thing I like best about this series is that the lead character is always someone new. And they are super involved in the story instead of just trying to figure it out from the outside. This is the third and they, by no means, need to be read in order. In this, Frank is called home when some builders find an old suitcase. He has thought for 20 years that his girlfriend took off on him and went to England alone. But what if she never made it?

Decent read in the Dublin Murder Series - I enjoyed Mackey as the main character but much like her previous book in this series, the plot needs to move a bit quicker.

Everyone raves about the Dublin Murder Squad series - and more often than not, people say The Likeness is the best one. And it was very, very good. But I enjoyed this one more. Can‘t put my finger on why but it just sucked me in. Her writing is so excellent and man, can she ever weave a compelling tale.

The problem with reading a book in a series as part of a reading challenge is that you then want to read the rest of the series whether they fit prompts or not. #3 was another great part of this series. I love how she takes a different member of the squad with each book, so they‘re related but also can stand alone.

Good filler for when I‘m on hold for Louise Penny novels. I like how the link between books are side characters from previous novels.

I really enjoy the way Tana French takes a minor character from the previous book in the series and turns them into a major character in the next book, so they feel familiar but also new. This book explores how family can be toxic and whether those connections are worth maintaining, and what we owe to people based solely on blood relations.

Another great mystery by Tana French! I love that her mysteries have such development of characters--they are not at all only plot driven.

#8 in the Modern Mrs Darcy Must Read mystery list! The 3rd book in the Dublin Murder Squad Series which follow detective Frank Mackey. When Frank tries to run away with his girl Rosie, she never shows up the night they are supposed to leave. He never went home but neither did Rosie and 22 years later her suitcase is found behind a fireplace in an abandoned house where it all began. Frank does on an unauthorized investigation! Sounds really good!

My April wrap up! Only three to go along with my reading slump of a year! But in the plus side I loved these!

This third book in the Dublin Murder Squad series is deep in local history and is probably my favourite so far. The narrative is riveting, the atmosphere of the place is vividly described and the complex and richly drawn characters are believable. French‘s writing style is slow burn, and the other thing I like about her novels are not merely solving of the crime but they‘re character driven; 👇

Serendipity. And look how books make us go away and learn more. I posted a pic of GoT limited edition malt whiskey yesterday and today I started on the tagged book, where the setting is in The Liberties, Dublin. The Guinness Storehouse, the home of Guinness is situated nearby. I took some time reading up on the historical parts of this centuries old neighbourhood and some places of interest nearby..Dublin Castle, Trinity College, Dún Laoghaire. ?
