A spellbinding, propulsive new novel from the bestselling mystery writer who "is in a class by herself." (The New York Times) Cal Hooper thought a fixer-upper in a bucolic Irish village would be the perfect escape. After twenty-five years in the Chicago police force and a bruising divorce, he just wants to build a new life in a pretty spot with a good pub where nothing much happens. But when a local kid whose brother has gone missing arm-twists him into investigating, Cal uncovers layers of darkness beneath his picturesque retreat, and starts to realize that even small towns shelter dangerous secrets. "One of the greatest crime novelists writing today" (Vox) weaves a masterful, atmospheric tale of suspense, asking what we sacrifice in our search for truth and justice, and what we risk if we don't.

It took me awhile to get into the rhythm of this book, but then….wow…total page turner. The atmospheric writing is intense and the twists and turns were really good. The plotting is clever and yet so simple as to be totally believable

A solid Tana French. I‘ve read all the Dublin Murder Squad books and it seems like this might be a one off or the start of a new series.

Looks like we have a sequel to The Searcher coming next year! Anyone else super excited?? 😊

Gissy Yes!👌 1y
dabbe Is it part of the Dublin murders? I only read her first one, and I'm thinking of reading the others during #Scarathlon! 🤩 1y
erank58 @dabbe The Searcher was a stand-alone! So not related to the characters in the Dublin Murder series, I don't recall any connections. But just as good, and I'm excited to see that this is now going to be a series! 1y
dabbe @erank58 She's such a fantastic writer, I'm sure I'll love anything she puts to paper! 1y

As some of you might know, I make padded book sleeves. My first rep term was such a great success, I‘ve decided to have another #repsearch for January - April 2023. If you love #bookish things, and would like to help promote a woman-owned small business check out my Instagram account @mapleleafstitching and the original post for details and to apply! Good Luck! 🍀

Mehso-so

This book took forever to get to the point. Once it did, it was good. The narrator for the audiobook did a great job I always find that Tana French‘s books are so slow to start.

Cal Hooper moves from Chicago to a tiny hamlet in Ireland to lead his post retirement life in peace and solitude. Then a local kid comes to him with a request - find a missing relative. Unwillingly, Cal tries to help the kid. But what he finds is much bigger and sinister than he expected!

Thanks for the tag @TheSpineView !!
1) I wanted to get the tagged from the library and waited... and waited... hopefully a hold that comes in for January...
2) I just feel like it was a weird reading year. Inconsistent. I got distracted constantly and put down a LOT of books and read super slow. So I guess I regret not having more focus and a better handle in my TBR. I am a mood reader and 2020 was a MOOD 🤣🤣

I‘ve got four other books to finish, but tonight I had to make a trip to western Ireland with Tana French. 💚 No regrets

REPollock I‘m looking forward to this one! 4y
Grrlbrarian Finished it today. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me, and as close to a trip to Ireland as I‘m likely to get for a while. Hope you like it too, @REPollock 4y

Another hit by Tana French. Another standalone as well, this one involves an ex-Chicago cop in the Irish countryside and a missing boy. The resolution has a special place in my heart for reasons. I can't say why--I'm not spoiling it!
