This is yet another novel with a hint in the German title. 🙈 But as I know realised the original does so as well. While listening I kept on wondering how Poirot could end up in series of political murders, that‘s not a regular task for him.

This one didn't appeal to me as much as other Christies. I didn't really understand the motivations of the characters, even after going back and listening to almost half of the novel again thinking I'd missed something. There's also a more gruesome, more modern crime scene than I'm used to in Christie's mysteries. That's not a negative, necessarily, just a surprise.

Poirot visits the dentist, who later that day is found to commit suicide... Or is it murder? This mystery kept me guessing as usual but I didn't care for how Poirot doubted his instincts so often. Overall a good read

Poirot‘s dentist appears to die by suicide, but he thinks it‘s murder. This is a mystery that isn‘t solved in a few hours but seems to confuse Poirot for awhile. Enjoyed the story & Poirot‘s fear of dental appointments (so relatable).

Poirot is at the dentist's for his regular check-up. Shortly after, the dentist's body is found. Did he shoot himself or was it murder?

This Poirot story has a terrific opening, introducing the characters at the dentist's surgery. I found it lagged a bit afterwards (I generally find the stories involving spies and criminal masterminds Poirot's least interesting cases).

Not one of my favourite Poirots. It‘s a bit of a wacky political thriller sort of mystery, and when I read this as a preteen I was terrified of the dentist, so having the book begin with a trip to the dentist did not get me on side 😆

This was my first Agatha Christie. It was ok. I‘m going to try to get in another one this month, but I think straight laced mysteries may not be for me.

TrishB I love murder mysteries and detective series, but not Christie 🤷‍♀️ 4y
rabbitprincess Planning to reread this (under the title An Overdose of Death). I read it as a tween and was terrified of it because it begins with Poirot going to his dentist 😬 4y

Thank you Jessie for the gift package! What a sweet surprise 😁. I should have time to read the Murakami before the end of the month, and the Christie for her month later this year! I love the kitty stickers and I drink tea every morning so I look forward to trying this tomorrow. 😋💗

In Italy schools are closed due to Coronavirus. I take this opportunity to prepare online lessons for my students and especially for reading.
And this is only the first of a long (hopefully) series.
I hope that everything will be resolved soon.
A big hug to those like me who are forced to stay at home.

I finished the #24B4Monday readathon with a personal best of 15 hours and 15 minutes! Thanks to the hosts @Andrew65 @TheReadingMermaid and @jb72 .

This is not among my favourites of Agatha Christie‘s works. The plot is somewhat implausible and Poirot is not as good without Hastings, but it‘s still a worthwhile read for Christie fans.

Andrew65 You can‘t do better than a personal best. 👏👏👏🥂🍾🥳😍🎈🔥 5y

Sometimes I reread Christie. There‘s really no substitute equal to her cosy murder mysteries. I had completely forgotten the characters and story line of this novel. It‘s not her greatest, and I don‘t really care for Poirot but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I keep track of all the characters she has named Gladys and this one features a prominent Gladys!!! 💉😬

An Agatha Christie classic with all it's usual twists and reveal at the end. Since I got this at a used book store and it's a bit older, came across this old cigarette ad in the middle of the book.... Funny to see and glad they don't put silly ads in books any more.

Readingismyescape Ads in the middle of books?? Ewww. 6y
LibLib @Readingismyescape could you imagine if they started doing that now?! There are ads in everything now so I wouldn't past them to start adding them to books again *shudders* 😰 6y

This book definitely had a lot going on. A lot of different characters that were a little hard to keep straight at some times, but a very good mystery. At this point I just sit back and try to enjoy Agatha Christie‘s books, because I‘m never going to guess the bad guy.

I‘m making good progress in my #makemereadit stack! Book 3 read!

Quite a number of Agatha Christie's book titles were taken from nursery rhymes. And Then There Were None, Hickory Dickory Dock, and the tagged book to name a few. I read this one years ago and remember the plot vaguely.

#NovemberByTheNumbers #dayone #daytwo I'm getting two for the price of one with book by Dame Agatha. This is one of her best plots imho, it's twisty turny involving a dentist, a blackmailer, a woman with buckled shoes & of course, Hercule Poirot. Again, some of the terms used are the casually racist type that was common in the times that she wrote in. Not defending, just explaining. Even Poirot himself cops derogatory comments about being "foreign"

#UncannyOctober #day11 #Rhyme There's quite a few of Dame Agathas books that have titles taken from nursery rhymes, Pocketful of Rye, And Then There Were None, Five Little Pigs etc. I think this is the only one that has a title that actually rhymes itself. I'm a huge Christie tragic, I could read every one of them over & over again forever. In fact, I'm planning a reread again this Xmas if I get the time.

MrBook Ooh! I like this cover for some reason. 7y

I'm really powering through my Dame Agathas, four more left before I've run out & have to order some more (though honestly there's only about 5or6 that I don't have)I remember watching this one with David Suchet as Poirot, but I think this is the first time reading it.Tricky little plot, with bodies who may or may not have suicided & other bodies who may or may not be the missing woman. This also shows Poirot having doubts over his ability. Mon dieu!
