A friend has been urging me for years to read this, and I finally did. My first thought was “what took me so long??” And then my second was, “I‘m so glad I read it now.” This is a book that will hit you differently depending on where you are in your life when you read it. For me in my 50s, it packed a punch. (Review continues) ⬇

Amiable It‘s the story of a man named William Stoner. Born at the end of the 19th-century into a poor Missouri farming family, he‘s sent to the state university to study agronomy. Instead, he falls in love with English literature and becomes a professor, which creates a permanent rift between him and his parents. Over the years, Stoner marries, has a child, experiences disappointments and frustrations and despair and all-too-brief moments of happiness. ⬇ 5mo
Amiable And that‘s pretty much the plot – 65 years of a man‘s life in less than 300 pages. Where the book shines is in Williams‘ prose and narration. Every single word is precisely chosen for maximum impact in a compressed space. He uses words simultaneously as the hammer and the nails to create an existential hero out of William Stoner. Stoner is uniquely Stoner, and yet Stoner is all of us. ⬇ 5mo
Amiable There is a line that conveys the bleakness of approaching middle-age: “He was 42 years old and he could see nothing before him he wished to enjoy and little behind him he cared to remember.” And then he lives for another nearly 25 years. And Williams carries you along the relentless flow of those years. This novel is perfection. And I don‘t use that term lightly.

4/5 ?

A book about a quiet man named William Stoner who led a very ordinary and lonely life. It seems boring but the writing is what kept me going. Glad I read it!

Just heard about this book today at work. How it‘s so good, it changed someone‘s life.

Has anyone read it?

DGRachel YES! I thought I was going to hate it, but it was a postal book club book so I made myself start it and couldn‘t put it down. It‘s a quiet book, but so elegantly written. 7mo
Tamra This is my favorite novel of all time. I am afraid to reread it. 💙 7mo
Saknicole It‘s been on my TBR for a decade. I read an excerpt with classes sometimes and love the descriptions. I too have heard amazing things. 7mo

JamieArc A guy I follow on Instagram, @booksaresick, this is his favorite book (and he has a pretty eclectic reading palate so I trust his judgment). I need to finally put it on my TBR. 7mo
Ruthiella I loved it, but as @DGRachel wrote, it‘s a very quiet book. I think one would have to be in the right mindset for it. 7mo
CindyMyLifeIsLit Absolutely love it—beautifully written, and lots of food for thought. 7mo
zezeki I've read it recently, but I must admit I didn't particularly like it, like @Ruthiella said, I wasn't in the right mindset for it at the time, though it does sound like something I'd enjoy. 7mo
Billypar I'm also in the unpopular opinion camp on this one. I thought the descriptive portions were beautifully written, so I can understand why it's gotten the response it has. But I found the characters and dialogue to be very thin - it seemed to me like the main character was a thinly veiled version of the author, and he had a lot of axes to grind. Just my own read, though - I know it's a favorite book of many! 7mo
jlhammar One of my favorites! 7mo

Stoner: ⭐⭐1/2
The Necessary Lie: ⭐⭐⭐

#unpopularopinion
I struggled a lot with Stoner, the book and the character: it took a while to grab me, for most of the novel I was not interested enough and I really disliked the side characters.. at the end I was just waiting for him to react and fight for what he loved.
Anyhow, it's not all negative.. i really appreciate Williams's writing style and the poem collection "The Necessary Lie".

Billypar I had the same response - great descriptive writing, but the characters seemed so flat to me. Like Williams wanted to fictionalize his life to puff himself up and air some grievances. 11mo
La_Cori @Billypar i'm happy i'm not the only one who didn't love this novel! 🙃 99% of the reviews i saw were 4 and 5 stars.. 11mo

Way too close to home. Just an ordinary life, with ordinary disappointments. Living your life may take everything you've got but in the end, on your last day, in your final thoughts; what did it matter? Surprise! It does. This book made me re-examine my own life and re-evaluate my failures. They were actually worse than I thought. But, they are mine. And I will relish my battles on my last day, even if they were against myself.

Stoner | John Williams

Dispassionately, reasonably, he contemplated the failure that his life must appear to be. He had wanted friendship and the closeness of friendship that might hold him in the race of mankind... He had wanted the singleness and the still connective passion of marriage. He'd had that, too. And he'd not known what to do with it and it had died. He had wanted love and he'd had love and had relinquished it; had let it go into the chaos of potentiality.

I enjoyed this quiet story of a man's life and the everyday things he goes through. The writing was beautiful, and although the story was depressing, I found myself aching to see what would happen next.

This isn't a book I devoured quickly. Instead I chose to read a few chapters each night which gave me time to reflect.

There's just something about this book that made me really connect with it. 💚

Catching up on #Alphabetgame. There were so many #LetterS and #LetterT books that I've loved! So I cheated and picked 2 for each..
📗Stoner by John Williams - an engrossing character study of an average guy
📗Sister Outsider - everything that is said about Audre Lorde's brilliance is true
📗Tempest - Shakespearean romances are my favourite.
📗To the Lighthouse - Woolf had to show up eventually.

Life sux & then you die? Only kidding. Or am I? 😳🤔🤷‍♀️

I have had this #classic on my #tbr shelf for years. Now that I‘ve finally read it, I‘m not sure what I think about it. Stoner‘s world is dull & drab & sad, yet I wanted to read on.

All can say is thank goodness for KD because the sadness & drabness was really getting to me.

I‘m glad I finally read it. And I can see why it still gets read.

Ruthiella I think, however, that he does get to do a job he loves and that‘s pretty rare in life, even now. 3y

Stoner is a beautifully written, lyrical portrait of one man's life. William Stoner doesn't so much live his life as endure it and we follow his unremarkable existence through years of academia, marriage, passion and graft.

Sadly, I had some pretty major issues with it which I will spoiler tag in the comments. If you want to read my full review, it's on Goodreads.

I will give it the 4 stars I feel it deserves because the prose was delicious.

vivastory One of my favorites of all time 💙💙 3y
RaeLovesToRead @vivastory I'm a third of the way through and so far it's a beautifully written, understated little novel. There is one thing that is bothering me a lot though and it's spoiling my enjoyment of it. Will write about it on GR when I've finished. 3y
Vansa I found this book completely awful. The protagonist is an unredeemable solipsist, and while that would be fine if the book meant to present him as such, but you're supposed to sympathise with him, when all I wanted to do was tell him to get over himself. Also he has a perfectly nice wife, who he literally assaults, and for some reason, we're supposed to dislike her!I found this book little more than a cliched slog, really. 3y
RaeLovesToRead @Vansa You have no idea how relieved I am that someone else has picked up on the marital rape aspect. I know that in the 60s when it was written and the 20s when it takes place, no one would have batted an eyelid, but as a modern reader, I'm really struggling to sympathise with him. Thank you for your thoughts. 3y
Vansa @RaeLovesToRead even given the time it was written in, it's pretty difficult to stomach! And there's no sympathy or kindness shown to his wife! 3y
RaeLovesToRead @Vansa I actually think his wife is quite badly written. She doesn't behave in a way consistent with anyone I've ever met or read about before. Some say it's her complexity, but I don't feel that Williams brings her to life. I'm 2/3 through now and I think I will probably still give the book 4 stars, but with a lengthy review outlining everything I hated about it. I'm not convinced he's 100% right about this Walker chap either... 3y
Vansa @RaeLovesToRead all the women are terribly written! I didn't like the book at all, really. 3y
RaeLovesToRead @Vansa It's one of those books that I could admire, but with A LOT of clauses and reservations. Hearing your thoughts has made me feel a lot saner, so thank you! 3y

A masterpiece of wonderful writing, unforgettable characters and wisdom.

It tells the story of an ordinary man who deals with life and all that comes his way with extraordinary stoicism and acceptance of the actions of others.

It's often heartbreaking, especially towards the end of the book, but it is never morose and ultimately it is uplifting simply because it is so beautifully written.

Stoner was a very underrated classic and surprisingly relatable when I read it a few years ago.

50 Great American Places is set all over the US but when I read it a few years back it really made me want to go back and see the Arch again.

I‘ve only been to Missouri twice- once to St Louis for work, and landed at the airport in Kansas City for a road trip across Kansas. I want to go back to both and all the spots in between!

Beautiful.
This re read for the library book club has resonated as much as my first reading. Simple prose describing a simple life yet so rich in all it says, and doesn't say.
Stoner's acceptance of all that life gives and takes away. His reluctance to defy it.
"What did you expect" is the line I take from this novel.

This book seems plain and unremarkable but it somehow draws you in and makes you feel like you‘ve just read something epic

I don't have the words to explain just how great this novel is. Imagine the most successful eulogy in the world, one that would make a complete stranger feel for the departed the same grief that the closest intimate would feel. That, in essence, is what this novel does, transforming what on the surface would appear an utterly quotidian life into a heroic epic. It achieves what it sets out to do with such precision that it really may be...

The_Penniless_Author ... a “perfect“ novel, as several author blurbs attest. It is somehow utterly specific to the MC and his time/place, yet universal in its depiction of a Sisyphean struggle to wring meaning/happiness/fulfillment out of a life over which one has little control. I love, love, LOVE this book! 4y
The_Penniless_Author @Milara I think this would translate very well. There's nothing baroque about the language, not a lot of colloquialisms. The style is straightforward realism, just done with such precision that it elevates to high art. As for the American thing, maybe it's tough for me to tell, being American, but I would say no, not in the way you mean. 4y
paulfrankspencer Do we need someone to translate it from American to English? 4y

He took a grim and ironic pleasure from the possibility that what little learning he had managed to acquire had led him to this knowledge: that in the long run all things, even the learning that let him know this, were futile and empty, and at last diminished into a nothingness they did not alter.

William Stoner entered the University of Missouri as a freshman in the year 1910, at the age of nineteen.

She was educated upon the premise that she would be protected from the gross events that life might thrust in her way, and upon the premise that she had no other duty than to be a graceful and accomplished accessory to that protection, since she belonged to a social and economic class to which protection was an almost sacred obligation.

Louise Such a good book! 4y
The_Penniless_Author @Louise I've heard so much about it, and I definitely haven't been disappointed so far. 4y
Louise After I read it, I read The Professor‘s House, by Willa Cather. It was interesting to read two books with the basic similarity of a MC who is a professor but so vastly different in how the authors went about telling the story. 4y
The_Penniless_Author @Louise I'd be interested in seeing the difference. To me, with Stoner, the MC's profession is almost incidental. It's really just the story of a life - an average, ordinary life in the conventional sense, but dramatized in such a way as to make you recognize the heroism in it. I've never heard of The Professor's House, but I'll have to check it out. 4y
Louise I‘d be interested in hearing your response to the two books. Happy reading! 4y

Like many men who consider their success incomplete, he was extraordinarily vain and consumed with a sense of his own importance.
