Gathering Blue
Gathering Blue | Lois Lowry
Lois Lowry once again creates a mysterious but plausible future world. It is a society ruled by savagery and deceit that shuns and discards the weak. Left orphaned and physically flawed, young Kira faces a frightening, uncertain future. Blessed with an almost magical talent that keeps her alive, she struggles with ever broadening responsibilities in her quest for truth, discovering things that will change her life forever. As she did in THE GIVER, Lowry challenges readers to imagine what our world could become, how people could evolve, and what could be considered valuable. Every reader will be taken by Kiras plight and will long ponder her haunting world and the hope for the future. This ebook includes a sample chapter of MESSENGER.

A pretty interesting follow up to The Giver. Kira should have been "taken to the field" when she was born because of her deformed leg, but her mother saves her. Kira develops a skill for sewing and, after her mother's death, she becomes responsible for repairing a ceremonial robe. Good buildup and reveals. The ending was good. It felt a little rushed and open ended, but not much different from the Giver, just not as impactful IMO.

After re-reading The Giver for my church book club, I decided I should finally read the rest of the series. We are all curious about what happened to Jonas & Gabriel. This is Kira‘s story—she lives in a primitive society where everyone is hunting/gathering. She gets picked to live an easier life because of her gift of sewing & dyeing colors. She finally realizes the evil of certain people in her society & plans to help fix it.

To the people who have read the book Gathering blue @SpotlightBookBlog @Johanna414 @hdhubbard don't you think that when Matt takes Kira to the side and says that she can marry a boy with blue eyes who lives there. Don't you think that the boy is Jonas from The giver (First book in the Quartet)?

1. Yep, I've read a series and it called The land of stories I've read many more, such as, Harry Potter, Pages & Co and many more.
2. It should be interesting, it should make sense, it should have the following, Setting, Mood, Inciting Incident(s), Conflict, Rising Action, Climax and Resolution. For it to be a proper book it needs to have good Spelling, Good Sentence Structure, good grammar, Paragraphs, and Appropriate Terminology.
3. IDK

I loved this world and following the journey of Kira the orphan girl as she discovers her special talents - if anything I was sad when it ended because I wanted more details. It was very enjoyable but there were hints of a cruel and dark element to the community which wasn‘t fully exposed. Perhaps in the next book? The audio book was so well read - it was a pleasure to listen to!

This was a great story. I absolutely loved The Giver and it was interesting to read about one of the other communities from the first book. I do wish it would have been a continuation of the first book but this one was fantastic on its own. Time for the next one! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TheAromaofBooks I had trouble getting into this one because I spent the whole time waiting for it to connect to The Giver! It was an enjoyable story on its own part, though. 5y
TamTracy @TheAromaofBooks I completely agree! That‘s probably the only reason I didn‘t give it 5 stars. I wanted the story to continue! 5y
TheAromaofBooks I'll be interested to see what you think of the other two books. I honestly found them lacking the tight narrative of the first two books. They do somewhat tie back into The Giver, but the thoughtful themes that make The Giver such a disturbing story are just not there. But lots of people seem to really enjoy them, so maybe I'm just the weird one?? lol 5y

⭐⭐⭐ I enjoyed this better than The Giver. I'm confused as to why there was no blue in the village though. And why the two books don't seem to connect except for a maybe mention of Jonas that I'm not even sure of. 😒

pppooraikul The next book, Messenger, will connect Gathering Blue and The Giver and I like it best. (The final one has a rather unsatisfying ending IMO.) 5y

Kira's saved after her mother dies, she is told she is no longer welcome due to her disfigurement. Kira feels lucky to have been rescued from a hard life or even death, she is now protected by the guardians and is taken care of much better than she could have imagined. But the longer she stays the more she learns that something is just not quite right. She, Matt & Thomas decide to investigate and figure out what is happening. 4/5 ⭐

Lois Lowry is a powerful but gentle writer. She knows how to carry you away, Iull you, and then surprise you. “Gathering Blue” is officially my favorite book from her. I cherish the image of Kira threading the robe of the Singer, saddening, blooming, and bleeding for art.

I loved 'The Giver' and have always wanted to finish the series (once I learned it was a series). This is #2 of 4 books. I like how this entire world is a mystery...its supposed to be a futuristic world, but it seems like a very out-dated way of life. I couldn't imagine growing up as Kira did.
It feels like they could of put all 4 books together, as they seem too short to read as a stand-alones. On to #3 'Messenger'. Got to find out what happens!

everlocalwest It's honestly not even the text of the novel, but the story behind it that moves me most. Lowry wrote it for her deceased done (if I remember correctly he died in combat in Afghanistan). In that way, the novel is a beautiful elegy. I hope you enjoy it as I did! 7y

This book is much like "The Giver", it was an alternate future, or a dystopian society. Much different form Jonas' community but there is much emphasis on "survival of the fittest", strong against the weak. It was a really inspiring and eye-opener book. And like "The Giver" it will definitely leave you begging for more.
