This is a murder mystery set in 1920s Montana, quite an unusual setting. And l really appreciate this.
It was a mix of 1920s coming of age story and a kind of Western vibe, because, really, things were still like in the previous century in some places.

It's really different from the usual 1920s cosy mystery 😊

(Couldn't find the book in the database, it've very new).

JazzFeathers Shari Decter wrote a very interesting post about how Prohibition helped women's finaltial independence. It's surprising and interesting.

My weekend reading was taken up by the joy of the last Jackson brodie story. Kate atkinson weaves great crime stories with lots of characters bot old + new while Jackson appears be drawn reluctantly into the plot. Here the North Yorkshire coast is the background to sex trafficking . The seaside atmosphere is captured well. More please kate.Hope to get 2 more books read before the readathon ends.

I did a LOT of reading on my week off and now I‘m back to emails and scintillating reports about nonsense. 😒 I did a back-to-back x 2 with Kate Atkinson‘s Jackson Brodie series. One Good Turn was a re-read for me and I was familiar with the storylines of the next 2 from having watched Case Histories. That did not hamper my enjoyment of them AT ALL though. Atkinson just has such a way with words. Big Sky revisits several characters from...

MicheleinPhilly the series. Given the time gap between Started Early and this one, I imagine it was like revisiting a long-lost friend. I have no idea if Atkinson intends to write more in the series but if she does, Jackson better be back in Edinburgh and PROPERLY with Louise or we‘re going to have words. #SeriesRead2021 times 4. ☺️ 4y

I enjoyed this fifth installment in the Jackson Brodie series. I caught one inconsistency with the previous books but only because I recently re-read/listened to all four in preparation for this one. If you like intricate plotting, dry humor and a slightly pessimistic world view mixed with mystery, try this series on for size.

CarolynM I love the Brodie books. I'm so glad she came back to him🙂 5y

Ruthiella @Buechersuechtling Recommend that they purchase the first book Case Histories if you can. My library has occasionally acquired my recommendations. I think they have to have enough patrons who make the request.🤔 5y

Crazy times need good books and this is a good one. Kate Atkinson lost me a bit with her WWII novels but is back on form with this latest in the Jackson Brodie series. I love Kate Atkinson‘s writing. This tackles really serious subjects (child abuse, modern slavery) but with surprising warmth and wit and great characters. I will also always love a book that references my home town of Grimsby.

Cathythoughts Great review! I loved this too 👍🏻❤️ 5y
JillR @cathythoughts I‘d forgotten how much I enjoy her writing 😊 (ps I saw a suggestion today that we use the lockdown to read the new Hilary Mantel...not sure I can go there haha 😅) 5y

I‘m looking forward to Bringing Up ... & the new one ....timing 🤔... ?!! I‘ve read only 2 Kate Atkinson- love her style & humour & down to earth writing 5y
JillR @cathythoughts yay! Doesn‘t it show how sometimes it can all be about the timing with a book? You can dislike it one time and feel completely different another. At the very least I‘m going to wait for the paperback of the new one and then we‘ll see... 5y

Kate Atkinson writes extremely well. I jumped into Big Sky without reading the previous Jackson Brodie mysteries, although I loved the WWII novels.

Big Sky takes us into the morass of human trafficking. The evil doers are linked to an earlier case involving the sexual exploitation of children. In short, not for the faint of heart, but a good, complicated story.

Be aware, it has her usual cast of hundreds, we‘ll not quite that many ...

Not sure how this dog squeezes into such a little ball! She‘s really not this small! Weirdo ...

It was nice to get reacquainted with Jackson Brodie in this, the 5th, of the series. My only issue being that I read the first 4 quite a while ago and there were lots of little shout-outs to the previous books. Some I caught, plenty I probably didn‘t. Still a quick, fun read.

This will probably (no, certainly!) be my shortest book review ever. I love, love, love this book. If you read the others in Kate Atkinson‘s Jackson Brodie series, you‘ve either already finished this, or it‘s high on your TBR. You must read this book! It flows beautifully, the writing is acute, and the characters—all of them—are multi-layered. One caveat: One should read these in order, because each successive ⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ (cont.) book refers back to earlier books and the multiple cases in them. Enjoy! ♥️ (edited) 5y

I was happy to be back in a story with former police detective Jackson Brodie, friend to anarchy, upholder of justice (which is not always the same as upholding the law). Human trafficking, murder, and so many secrets… but Brodie untangles the mayhem and even sorts out some of his own personal stuff too. A gripping #audiobook read by Jason Isaacs.

CarolynM I love that cover. Better than the one they're using here. 5y

So I put a library hold on this audiobook based on title. It wasn‘t until it dropped that I realized it was 5th in a series. So, I started listening and there were so many characters and I wasn‘t sure whose story I should already know. I thought I should stop and start with the original, but the book was good and I feared I‘d never get back to it. I stuck with it and found the rhythm. Dang, fans of this series must love this one!

mcipher I did that with this series as well - someday I want to go back and read them all in order. 5y

For some reason this series has been hit or miss for me. This one focuses on a sex trafficking ring in a small seaside town. There are so many different threads in the beginning that it‘s hard to follow. I love the dry sense of humor and relatable asides that she sprinkles into the story. This isn‘t the best in the series, but it‘s a solid one. I would highly recommend reading it when you have the time to dive in and enjoy the layered plot.

The key for me here was listening in audio. It's a fairly dialogue heavy book and as usual with an Atkinson, it requires patience. The narrator definitely elevated this one!

And it's time to burn to the ground the concern for reputations of rich powerful (generally white) men and their predilections. So timely for the Epstein case here in this book.

This wasn't my favourite Kate Atkinson. I think she wrote her odious men too well and also the trafficking girls and women narrative was just too real for me. That being said, I'm giving it a "pick" because I couldn't stop reading it and cared about the story and some of the characters.

Disappointing. Certainly not her best. Hard to keep track of characters and the numerous plots. I felt it was another TV series. I had just rewatched Case Histories and this is taken in part from that and seems like an extension of the series. It wasn‘t just me having trouble following— my partner read it before me and she had a hard time too.

Kate Atkinson is one of my favorite writers. I‘ve read all her books and only one has disappointed me. This novel is her latest book and features Jackson Brodie, a British private eye and ex-policeman. The subject is sex trafficking, quite a timely choice, but Atkinson doesn‘t dwell on the graphic details we are all too familiar with. If you‘ve never read any of Atkinson‘s books, I urge you to read at least one. She‘s a wonderful writer.

Dynamic and lovable characters, riveting storytelling, humor and gravity in one breath—Kate Atkinson never ceases to amaze me. This is the 5th in a series following the same unrealistic-but-wonderful MC, Jackson Brodie. The voices of the women in Jackson‘s head have reached a fever pitch in this volume & Atkinson has ramped up the feminist and political themes. Even the subject matter is more raw and brutal (& honest) than ever. I loved it.
