If you want to learn about the famine in Ireland in the 1800‘s, if you want to learn about life on a ship leaving Ireland heading to New York and if you like a story that involves a murderer on board the ship, this book is for you. There‘s even an affair going on! This book is brutal and yet I‘m glad I read it. It‘s a history lesson that needs to be told and remembered. What happened in Ireland was a terrible thing.

kspenmoll I am still processing this book. 6d
Suet624 @kspenmoll it took me a bit of time before I could write this review. 😊 being Irish, you know, it really gets you in the gut. 6d

This is the story about a miserable excuse of a man and the man he‘s been coerced to murder, an Englishman who lived in #Ireland, during their escape aboard ship to NYC from the famine. But a lot of folks have reasons to commit the murder, and does he really “deserve” to die? There are a lot of side stories that all tie back to these two characters. I wasn‘t terribly keen on the writer‘s style but it was a good, interesting read. #bookedintime ⬇️

What happens when Ireland meets a Hawaii institution. Thought I‘d share my lunch & dinner for St. Patrick‘s Day. I didn‘t feel like cooking this weekend but wanted corned beef & cabbage. The closest easiest thing was to run to Zippy‘s (think Hawaii Denny‘s) for their special today. No potatoes, it‘s served plate-lunch style with 2 scoops rice & mac salad! 😂 And of course I had to add-on the drink lilikoi punch & Napple special (apple turnover).⬇️

DebinHawaii … & their other special “Pot of Gold Soup” (there‘s the potatoes!) 😉 While not traditional it was/is delicious. Eating half for lunch & other half for dinner & the Napple for tomorrow‘s breakfast.

I‘ve only just started this book for #FoodandLit #Ireland & #BookedInTime but I hope to read more tonight after work. ☘️ 💚🍀

Vansa I'm not doing this read-along, but I have read this book, and I found it devastating. I loved how the writer balances personal experience along showing you the wider socio-economic reasons for the Famine in Ireland. 2w
Cuilin @Vansa perfect description. 2w
kspenmoll I could not put this book down. So i kept on reading… felt so up close & personal. One of my great greats on my dad side cane over as a 12 year old during that time. There used to be an exhibit at Quinnipiac College in CT on the famine but it lost his home there & has not landed anywhere else. My son saw the exhibit-I did not unfortunately. 2w
Cuilin @kspenmoll oh my gosh, I think of that 12-year-old as a boy making the voyage and then having to sit on a ship because of quarantine rules to then finally make it and now you‘re here able to tell the tale. Amazing! Do you know where in Ireland? 2w
kspenmoll @Cuilin Dunquin,County Kerry. My dad‘s mom side, O‘Dalaigh, eventually becoming Daly here. Two sibs survived & died in 1870 in Dunquin, 3 are not accounted for so presumed died during famine. 1w
kspenmoll Some of my other relatives came over through Montreal- in early 1870. I don‘t know when they arrived in Canada, whether it was during the famine or not. My Abbott grandfather was born in Newfoundland, & my brother found family graves from mid 1800s. (edited) 1w
AnneCecilie I like it and I‘m keeping to the schedule, but sometimes the way it‘s told takes me out of the story. And I haven‘t quite figured out the point of the extracts from the letters throughout (edited) 1w
Cuilin @kspenmoll so beautiful you have so much of your history. Dún Chaoin, is in the Gaeltacht (Irish Speaking area) in Ireland. There a a few different Irish language dialects in Ireland this is the one I learned. It‘s a beautiful place. 1w
Cuilin @AnneCecilie Yes, there‘s definitely more to just storytelling in this one. 1w
Suet624 This book is really something. A great book to read during March. Such a brutal history lesson though. 1w
Cuilin @Suet624 Agreed. Brutal is the perfect word. 1w
Bookwormjillk I finally caught up. It‘s still not coming together for me, but I‘m sure it will in the end. 1w

What a brilliantly told story of the experience of people escaping the potato famine to the promised land. Told by a reporter present on the ship this is a finely woven mystery that tells of a murder, the killer, and conditions in Ireland at the time. The interconnected lives add to the tension + it is dickensian in telling esp with hid cameo. A joy to read .
