Fireborne | Rosaria Munda
Seraphina meets Red Rising in a debut young adult fantasy that's full of rivalry, romance . . . and dragons. The brutal revolution that overthrew the Dragonlords may have orphaned Annie and Lee, but it's brought new hope to their city. Now anyone--including the lowborn--can have wealth, an education, and even test into the governing class of dragonriders. Aristocratic by birth and with his identity concealed, Lee's confidence and air of power have made him a rising star in the very regime that slaughtered his family. Annie, a former serf, is as bold a rider as they come--in the air. On the ground, she struggles with self-doubt. Now, after seven years of friendship, Annie and Lee are rivals for the top position in the city's fleet. All the riders have been preparing to lead their people into the future, yet no one is ready when survivors from the Dragonlord families resurface with dragons of their own, bent on reclaiming the city. With war looming and their relationship growing, Annie and Lee will both have to confront wavering loyalties. Lee will be forced to choose between killing the only family he has left, or betraying everything he's come to believe in, while Annie will have to decide whether to protect the boy she loves . . . or step up to be the champion her city needs.

#serieslove2024 This first book was a little slow at first, but was actually quite good! (My opinion: Not as good as Fourth Wing but similar). A revolution to replace aristocracy and questions about if new regime is as bad as the old. Two orphaned dragon riders are left to question loyalties to family that is blood vs. found family. The author says this was inspired by the Aeneid and Plato. I will definitely read the rest of the series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I finished this series last night and it is not one I see promoted a lot in the book community. I loved this series from start to finish. It is YA with no real spice but it is an excellent dragon based fantasy. It is adventurous, political, intriguing, and thoughtful. You go on a roller coaster ride with the characters and you root for them. I will miss then until I pick these books up again!

Meshell1313 Sounds right up my alley! Stacked! ✅ 12mo

A very intriguing YA epic fantasy with dragons! A revolution has happened, overturning an aristocracy. Two orphans who are intrinsically connected are chosen to be dragon riders. They compete for a leadership position and political mysteries unravel. A solid read and I look forward to continuing the series. 4⭐️

Fireborne | Rosaria Munda

The dragon riders (since all the old guard were killed inthe revolution) are all teenagers. Annie (Antigone) and Lee (aka Leo) ~15 &16, grew up together as orphans. She lost her family to dragonfire and he lost his to the revolution and both bear the scars of the past. Both want to be First Rider. They are kids on the cusp of adulthood but the dragoriders are all asked to bear a lot of responsibility for the new regime.

humouress The author shows both the pros and cons of the meritocracy; it has improved the lot of most people but some people lose out, families who were wealthy previously don‘t seem to have changed status and when famine threatens, the ‘old methods‘ are used to ensure all the food is collected ‘for the greater good‘ 2y

I really liked ‘Fireborne‘ when I read it but I didn‘t review it so now I‘m listening to it for a second go.
I like Julia; she wanted to be part of a male-only profession and not only did she go out and break barriers to achieve that, she rose to the very top.

After a revolution, everything is merit based and now dragons can bond to commoners rather than just the 3 hereditary dragon families. Young dragonriders grapple with their new role and we see the flaws in the new regime (even if they may not; there's a Ministry of Propaganda and a Censorship Committee)

humouress We see the viewpoints of both Lee and Annie, two dragonriders contending to be Firstrider and no indication of who will win - or who we want to win 3y
humouress Author says some of her ideas come from Virgil‘s ‘Aeneid‘ and Plato‘s ‘Republic‘ (I‘ve not read either of those) 3y

🎧📚If you put Hunger Games, GoT, HP, Red Rising & an extra healthy dose of dragons in a blender on high ... you‘d get something close to his book.

I enjoyed it. Extra star for no real romance! It was slow.

War makes it possible for anyone to become a dragon rider. Annie the lowborn meets Lee the privileged. They both lost something to the other side. They both are fighting for the top spot.

Lots of dragons & political intrigue.

It's not everyday that you hear back from one of your favorite authors, or receive a bookplate in the mail from them. 🥺🥰 (The details on those stamps! 🐲)

If anyone needs to read at least one book or series with dragons in their lifetime, please consider reading The Aurelian Cycle by Rosaria Munda, particularly the first book Fireborne. The sequel Flamefall was released last March, and the third book's coming along. 😃

Bookish_Gal That‘s amazing! I recently came across that book m because I love dragons. Especially with riders. 3y

1. BOOK REC: Fireborne (The Aurelian Cycle #1) by Rosaria Munda. The meaning of revolution. And dragons. 🤌

2. RECENT READ: The Gurkha and the Lord of Tuesday. Easily a 5 star read even before the first chapter of this novella is over.

3. SHELF UPDATE: The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec. That cover. 👀

4. ARBITRARY READING GOAL: Read a Kazuo Ishiguro novel before I turn 31.

I did not love it. My frustration was more with the very unrealistic role for teen protagonists. They were in leadership roles that just did not make sense to me. Surely there are a range of adults in this world? It also reminded me of Hunger Games and Red Rising in little ways- but those are favorite books. #readyoursign

I read an ARC of Fireborne and loved it. It was plot and character driven, fast paced and had great world building. The characters inspire empathy and the reader very quickly cares what is going to happen to them. The Dragons add an exciting dimension to the story. Fireborne is thought provoking and raises a lot of ethical questions about how to structure a society.

Action-packed, triumphant, engaging, fascinating.

Fireborne‘s a novel destined to become a classic, the plot centers around two characters. The revolution involved dragons that belonged to a specialized few, after the revolution that changed. The dragon rider‘s became based upon a merit-based system for all people, that must be proven from tournaments. The two main characters Lee, and Annie are dragon riders, with one of their identities hidden.

I absolutely loved this first installment in a new dragon-based YA fantasy series. It reminds me a lot of a less wordy Game of Thrones, but with more dragons. The narrator changes between 2 dragon-riding orphans, Lee and Annie. My favorite aspect of this book so far though is the history and politics of the world. I definitely recommend this first book in the Aurelian Cycle series to anyone who enjoys this genre. In stores today 10/15/19. 🐲🐉

I‘m of two minds about this YA dystopian fantasy.

First the pros: it‘s well written, features wonderful world-building and portrays strong male and female protagonists in Lee (17) and Annie (16)...we are able to hear both their perspectives as told in alternating chapters. And I especially enjoyed how the bonds were forged between humans and their dragons (and how strong they become).

But I felt that it was too drawn out, lagged in places 🔽🔽

robinb and could‘ve been much tighter than 400+ pages. There was also a lot of political intrigue here, between an old regime ruled by a triarchy of dragonlords and a post-revolution government headed by a First Protector. The author notes that she based some of her political structure on Plato‘s Republic and Virgil‘s Aeneid, and while I‘m not very familiar with these works, I will say that I became somewhat frustrated with how similarly 🔽🔽 5y
robinb power-hungry they both were. The class system actually reminded me a bit of the Divergent series. One other thing that irritated me was the romance here. While Annie & Lee share a deep and abiding bond, there is an additional third party that just served to confuse me. TBH, I wanted to throttle Lee more than a few times for behavior that seemed out of character to me in this triangle. 🔽🔽 (edited) 5y
robinb It ended with a bit of a cliffhanger, and as I see that there will be at least two more, yes, I‘ll probably add them to my TBR. 😊 3.75/5⭐️

Thanks to #BookishFirst!
