Collected Poems of Robert Burns
Collected Poems of Robert Burns | Robert Burns
21 posts | 3 read
With an Introduction by Donald McFarlan. Robert Burns, the most celebrated of all Scottish poets, is remembered with great devotion - his birthday on 25th January provokes fervour and festivity among Scots and many others the world over. Born in 1759 into miserable rustic poverty, by the age of eighteen Burns had acquired a good knowledge of both classical and English literature. In June 1786 his first collection of verse, Poems Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect, which included 'To a Mouse' and 'The Cotter's Saturday Night', was greeted with huge acclaim by all classes of society. His later poems and ballads include 'Auld Lang Syne', the beautiful song 'My Love is like a Red Red Rose', 'Highland Mary', 'Scots Wha Hae' and his masterpiece, 'Tam o'Shanter'.

I‘ve got a copy of Robert Burns that was published in 1943! Just a plain green cloth bound hardcover with a matching ribbon bookmark. I got it from a library overflow sale. 💚

#SundayFunday Hope you are all having a great week, and don‘t forget to tag me!

Teresereading I have a book of English poetry given to my great great grandmother by her fiancée in late 1800s. Will have to check how old it is. 7mo

Halloween

The mix of Scottish and English make reading very unique. I had to Google some words to make sense of the poem.

#joinin Christmas night supper.... cock-a-leekie soup that‘s been simmering since this morning! In addition to the required boatload of leeks, this edition has carrots, parsnips, celery, turnip, and golden potatoes instead of rice or barley. Bone-in chicken thighs and chopped bacon and prunes on top.

Lynnsoprano That looks fabulous! 5y
Tamra Yum! 5y

Burns Night was SO MUCH FUN, y'all! We read stuff aloud and ate delicious haggis (WHO KNEW?) and sang songs and drank Scotch. At the host's request, I performed a brief history of Burns's life and gave a toast, then got called upon to play the witch in another guest's trippy Scottish fairy tale reenactment. And I got fancy clan tartan cards after the lecture on Scotch.

It was totally worth missing six hours of #24in48, but now I'm back in.

Marina_h Sounds like a great night! I tried haggis when we were in Scotland and was surprised that I actually liked it. But it's really packed full of flavour so I couldn't eat it as a main course. We had it with our fried breakfast 😊 6y
Oryx Scotch 😍 haggis 🤢 (it tastes ok actually, just the thought of what's in it puts me off). Sounds like a really fun night. I forgot it was Burns night. 6y
xicanti @Marina_h tonight we had regular old haggis AND these puffed pastry things filled with the stuff. I ate an embarrassing amount of them. 6y

xicanti @Oryx it was actually on Friday, but the host figured Saturday was a better bet. Given how late things went, I'm sure she was right. 6y
BiblioLitten Sounds so much fun!! 😃 6y

@VioletCavalier and I attended the 2nd annual Robert Burns celebration at a local Michigan brewery; we had haggis, neeps and tatties, cherry cranachan, and Scottish eggs - all yummy Scottish foods!!! Also there were Scottish dancers performing while bagpipes played!

We even wore plaid! 😊

I hit 4:48 for #24in48 while I finished TURNING POINTE by Katherine Locke and sampled Lucy Parker's London Celebrities series. Now I've gotta hunker down with these old, old books I inherited from my grandpa, because I'm expected to share a wee literary tidbit tonight.

Shaneyney I LOVE old books !!! 6y

In Honor of Burns Night - That time my Bestest Book Buddy Becky took me to a Whisky Tasting & Poetry Class.
"And – if freedom an whisky gang thegither –
How do you like your freedom? Swallowed neat?
Distillations of history, language, weather
In an usqueba o barley, burn water, peat." #burnsnight #poetry #whisky
It's a very long poem. Read it here. ?
