The Long Hard Road Out of Hell
The Long Hard Road Out of Hell | Neil Strauss, Marilyn Manson
18 posts | 52 read | 14 to read
The best-selling autobiography of Americas most controversial celebrity icon, Marilyn Manson (with a bonus chapter not in the hardcover). In his twenty-nine years, rock idol Manson has experienced more than most people have (or would want to) in a lifetime. Now, in his shocking and candid memoir, he takes readers from backstage to gaol cells, from recording studios to emergency rooms, from the pit of despair to the top of the charts, and recounts his metamorphosis from a frightened Christian schoolboy into the most feared and revered music superstar in the country. Illustrated with dozens of exclusive photographs and featuring a behind-the-scenes account of his headline-grabbing Dead to the World tour.

What did I just read? I could not put this book down! I need a sequel, since this book was written in 1998. I know that a lot of craziness has happened in this band since then. I actually attended a MM concert in the late 90‘s. I can attest to the fact that none of the outrageous rumors about this bands concert antics were true. It was a good show, and this was a very entertaining book!

sjdreads I‘ve had this book for so long and I LOVED MM!! Saw him in 2001, I think. Holy crap, just realising it must be 20 years. Just started reading this and loving it so far! 3y

This has been a long hard year. I made an ultimate life decision in February: I left the newspaper where I had been editor for almost 10 yrs. The stress was too much. It was taking a toll on my health. I know so many things about the seemingly normal ppl in this town that I cant even look at them the same. Now I'm a cashier in a grocery store. And when I get the what are you doing here questions I just smile. I'm happy. That's what I'm doing.

Alora Awe I love this 💜 Do whatever makes YOU happy. 5y
Nute Congratulations on having the strength and courage to value and protect your happiness and good health. Be happy!💕 5y

InkedBookworm13 @nu-bibliophile we didn't have cellphones back then, we had beepers. The only real cell phones back then we're still huge. Nokia phones came out about a year or so after I graduated. And there were no mp3 players yet. 5y
Headinherbooks_27 I remember the beepers! I had one too 😁😁 5y

We know what everyone is reading 📖 but just for fun, what's everyone listening too? It's not a surprise that my music choices closely match my reading choices 🖤💀

Marilyn Manson, In This Moment, Pink Floyd, Disturbed, Halestorm, Metallica are just a few of my favorites.

This book has been my favorite so far! This was the second book I read this year and boy was it eye opening. If you like Marilyn Manson then you should read this. It really explains why he is who he is. This is going into my reread pile!

This was probably the most perverse, disgusting thing I've ever read, but I couldn't put it it down. It makes Motley Crüe's - The Dirt look like Goodnight Moon. While I would never condone any of the things he says happened in the book, he shows that he is also human, looking for love and acceptance. ⚠️Trigger Warning: Everything in this book is a trigger and I should probably book an appointment with my therapist now. ?

Talented, intelligent? Yes. Elitist, pretentious, misogynistic? YES. That's being generous.

This book is so dark and disturbing, I couldn't wait to finish it and climb out of the fucking hole surrounding me.

This was published in 1999 so hopefully some of the bizarre behaviors have changed, but I won't hold my breath.

Books_Wine_Repeat 😳 This will go on my I'll-read-as-a-last-resort pile. 8y
pjmayhair Reading the book profile is even a put-off... 8y

Gayan I read this when it came out and could not believe how bazaar he actually is. I wax never a huge fan but WOW, I felt like I needed a shower when I finished. 8y
valeriegeary This cover is so creepy 8y
britt_brooke @pjmayhair That should've been my clue, ha! I was hoping for some redeeming qualities and an explanation that it's all an act. Instead, it was far more bizarre than I could've ever imagined. 8y
britt_brooke @Books_Wine_Repeat Wise choice. 😆 8y
britt_brooke @Gayan I was never a huge fan either, but I thought it might be an interesting read. Completely bizarre and horrific and disturbing. It was just TOO MUCH. I was hoping for the explanation that it was all an act. 8y
britt_brooke @MicheleinPhilly @valeriegeary Totally creepy cover. Even creepier book. 8y
EvieBee Yikes! Well now you can't blame Dita for hitting the road, right? 8y
BookishRedhead I read this when I was younger. I couldn't finish it. It creeped me. 8y
britt_brooke @BookishRedhead I was not prepared for the disgusting and horrifying acts that he describes as if they are no big deal. The only reason I didn't bail is because it was short, lol. 8y

Reading Marilyn Manson's book while my kids play on the playground at Chick Fil A, an odd combination. Feels slightly naughty. 🙃

OffTheBeatenShelf.com @LisaJo I'm from Alabama (Birmingham, specifically) and totally thought the same thing. I now live in Ohio, so it's weird seeing people that don't make the connection between houndstooth and Bear. 😂 8y

LisaJo @britt_brooke @OffTheBeatenShelf.com I am an Alabama transplant. I also live near Birmingham. I'm originally from Southern California. When I moved here the first culture shock I got was college football. Auburn and Alabama. So now every time I see houndstooth all I can think of is The Bear. 8y
Kappadeemom @britt_brooke I read 50 Shades of Gray on a flight. Was super glad it was on Kindle 😳 8y
britt_brooke @readinginthedark This was the first time I tried it. I really should do it more often. It's too easy when they're in a contained area like that. 8y

britt_brooke @LisaJo 👍🏻👍🏻 I bet that was major culture shock coming from Southern CA. It was shocking for me coming from Kentucky, haha! 8y

britt_brooke @MrBook Ha! Yes, I feel the same about beer, of course. ?? So, the book was a random ebook purchase the other day when Amazon thoughtfully "suggested" it on my kindle. For 1.99, I thought "what the hell, I'm in." Interesting so far. Stay tuned! 8y
britt_brooke @MrBook PS. Now, hubby and I are having Goose Island's special Bourbon County Brand Stout. https://www.google.com/amp/amp.usatoday.com/story/94361448/?client=safari It's a special release, Black Friday thing. SO. GOOD. 8y

#booktober #day11 #memorablememoirs I've read a lot of biographies & memoirs, but this one is the most memorable out of all of them. Marilyn Manson has a reputation as a devil worshiping, Crowley loving goth god, which admittedly he's cultivated. But he's actually very intelligent, well spoken and a great conversator who underneath all the craziness is a lovely person from a normal family. I'm not a huge fan of his music but I really enjoyed this.

Rachael_reads I read this in high school for a writing class I was taking. I wrote my thesis on Marilyn Manson. There is some crazy stuff in that book, if I remember correctly! I wonder where my copy went.... 8y
The_Literary_Jedi I loved reading this as well, such a huge fan of Marilyn Manson both as an individual artist and band. Listening to his interviews and reading things he has written is an amazing juxtaposition to his music and public persona. So many people ridicule or make assumptions based on his creation of MM on the outside without taking time to hear the words he actually speaks 8y
TrishB I think he's amazing! 8y
Zelma I love his interviews - very smart and well-spoken artist. 8y
