Three Parts Dead
Three Parts Dead | Max Gladstone
A god has died, and it's up to Tara, first-year associate in the international necromantic firm of Kelethres, Albrecht, and Ao, to bring Him back to life before His city falls apart. Her client is Kos, recently deceased fire god of the city of Alt Coulumb. Without Him, the metropolis's steam generators will shut down, its trains will cease running, and its four million citizens will riot. Tara's job: resurrect Kos before chaos sets in. Her only help: Abelard, a chain-smoking priest of the dead god, who's having an understandable crisis of faith. When Tara and Abelard discover that Kos was murdered, they have to make a case in Alt Coulumb's courtsand their quest for the truth endangers their partnership, their lives, and Alt Coulumb's slim hope of survival. Set in a phenomenally built world in which justice is a collective force bestowed on a few, craftsmen fly on lightning bolts, and gargoyles can rule cities, Three Parts Dead introduces readers to an ethical landscape in which the line between right and wrong blurs.

A mystery/dark urban fantasy story, this is the first in a series that explores a world of magic and gods. Necro magic user Tara finds herself thrust into a mystery when her first job is to resurrect recently deceased god Kos but things aren‘t simple. Tara works with a strange host of characters to get answers.
This book was witty, bizarre and strange but still overly enjoyable. Definitely going to try the next book.

Okay, I know this is an unpopular opinion from what I‘ve seen but I...did not like this book. I felt like I barely got to know the characters as characters. The world was cool—but we just kept throwing stuff at the wall rather than building it out and making sense of it. Lots of things happen. But it often feels like we‘re told the action rather than experiencing it. Book club should be interesting anyway.

Honestly, this is how I am feeling about the world and character building so far. I am enjoying the tone. I know this is generally pretty well received so I know I am probably the odd one out. Should make for an interesting upcoming book club discussion.

great and fun read! I really enjoyed Gladstone's mix of urban fantasy with a crime/lawyer procedural. the cast of the book is quirky yet unique, and their dynamics play well off each other. I've noticed some people have issues with the prose style since it's a touch more descriptive and snarky than the average fantasy book but I think it works pretty well in this case.

HeyT My friends all looked at me crazy after I read this and told them they had to read it and it was about magic lawyers. 4y

Part fantasy, part alternate world, part law, part religious—it‘s hard to categorize. But if I had to classify it, I‘d say legal fantasy. In fact, the legal parts are so strong, I looked up the author to see if he was a lawyer (he‘s not). But as a lawyer myself, I appreciated seeing a legal system combined with magic in a fantasy book.

A murder mystery. Who killed the God of Alt Coulumb? Gods are bound by very detailed contracts, with clauses and loopholes. Mages are practicing lawyers who write the contracts and conduct trials. An interesting world for a story.

However, the writing is trying for snarky but often ends up just clunky, to the point it was a distraction. I also didn't build up any sympathy with the MC, who was alternately improbably skilled and incredibly naive.

I enjoyed the first book in this series very much. It's an urban fantasy murder mistery, with gods and gargoyles, and where practicing magic is like practicing the law. I love Tara, the main characte, and how smart and resourceful she is. Can't wait to read the rest.

So yeah, apparently Squidapus has been missing out on a fun author. This combination fantasy of Gods and necromancy and also murder mystery and court procedural was great. It had a fantastic ability to create a world and populate it with it's own history and terminology that didn't leave you confused. There were no pages of exposition or awkward stilted dialogue but Squidapus never had trouble following along. And a rarity, a satisfying ending!

THREE PARTS DEAD was fun to read. It‘s the first novel of The Craft Sequence series written by Max Gladstone. Upon seeing the Judge Cabot dead and literally torn apart, Tara Abernathy also sees a Gargoyle who claims not to have done the dirty deed. Things get exciting in the second half. The world-building is outstanding! Driverless carriages, shape-shifting Justice enforcers, and floating buildings!

Max Gladstone will be at #GenCon2018 and he‘s one of the authors I snagged a ticket for his autograph. I‘ve been putting off reading this series but my goal this month is to read a book from the authors I got autograph tickets for to make sure I really want their autograph. If I read the entire series it will be in the order it was published.

GondorGirl Any interest in trying to do a Litsy meetup at GenCon? 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @GondorGirl I‘m figuring out my schedule now, I kind of overbooked in autographs, but I‘d like to meetup with Littens! 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @GondorGirl Are you going all four days? 6y
See All 28 Comments
GondorGirl @jpmcwisemorgan I have tickets for the whole show, but only have things scheduled on Thursday and Saturday right now. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @GondorGirl I think Sunday is the only day without much I‘ve scheduled. My eyes were bigger than my time so I‘m reevaluating some of my choices. Do you know of other Littens who are going? 6y
GondorGirl @jpmcwisemorgan Not offhand, but I'm sure we could put the word out. What all do you want to see at the con? Have you gone to GenCon before? 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @GondorGirl I‘m not been to GenCon before. I‘m really not much of a gaming person but one of my friends who‘s going is. My brother goes too so I‘m hoping to get to hang out with him a little bit. I was really hoping to get Scott Lynch‘s autograph but I didn‘t get a ticket but my brother told me sometimes they sign other times. Patrick Tomlinson is my other for sure but everyone is tentative. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @GondorGirl We‘re going to try some games and we‘re doing the haunted walking tour because a new goal is to do those in every place I visit if I can. 6y
GondorGirl @jpmcwisemorgan The company I work for has a booth there, so we go frequently. If you have any questions let me know. 6y
GondorGirl @jpmcwisemorgan Also, you can buy generic event passes for, like, 2$. Sometimes there's room for you to use those to get in at the end of a signing line. 6y
GondorGirl @jpmcwisemorgan My must-dos are to get the rest of my Mercedes Lackey books signed and track down Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman to get more of my DragonLance stuff signed. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @GondorGirl I bought generic event passes for just in case kind of moments. We will have to try to meet up while we‘re there! That would be so awesome! 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @GondorGirl Wait. Is Mercedes Lackey going to be there? She wasn‘t on the list I saw. 6y
GondorGirl @jpmcwisemorgan Yup. She and Larry Dixon have a couple panels and signing slots Thursday and Saturday. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @GondorGirl I missed that! OMG! 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @GondorGirl Do I have to buy books there or can I bring my own? I know if I go to a signing here at Book People they ask that you buy the book there. 6y
GondorGirl @jpmcwisemorgan There is usually a bookseller on site, but you can bring your own (and should because it's usually easy cheaper). 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @GondorGirl Yes! My brother got a book from Mercedes Lackey last year and I‘d like to get the rest of that series signed if I can. I may bring other books with me because that would be cheaper. I just wanted to make sure so I didn‘t do something I wasn‘t supposed to do. 6y
GondorGirl @jpmcwisemorgan Last year I brought over 30 books to have signed. But I'm lucky in that I can leave things in our booth instead of having to cast everything. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @GondorGirl I also didn‘t want authors to be oh, you didn‘t buy my book here from me because I don‘t want them to be sad. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @GondorGirl They‘ll have books available to buy there, right? I only own Scott Lynch‘s books in ebook. 6y
GondorGirl @jpmcwisemorgan There is a bookseller on site. They usually have at least something from each author. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @GondorGirl Excellent. My brother found me a copy of one of his books, I think. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @GondorGirl I‘m so excited about Lynch I can‘t focus at work. My boss was making suggestions about where to find a book. My poor officemate had to listen to me for about an hour already. 6y
GondorGirl @jpmcwisemorgan It looks like there are a bunch of his books on Ebay. Just watch the shipping options so they get to you on time. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @GondorGirl Yes, that‘s the trouble I‘m running into. I didn‘t think I‘d be able to get into his signing because it sold out but I was looking at the schedule today and saw it was open and I got so excited! I figured I might be able to get a book there but my brother found something and I paid expedited shipping on a different one so between the two of us I should be set. That‘s the downside to ebooks. 6y
GondorGirl @jpmcwisemorgan I'm going to a huge book sale tomorrow. I'll keep an eye out for any of his stuff. 6y

Loved this first entry in the Craft Sequence and I can't wait to read more of the series! Steampunk fantasy mixed with legal thriller is the genre mashup I never knew I needed. My only disappointment is that (because these books are written out of sequence) I won't get to see Tara Abernathy again until book 5. But I'm sure books 2-4 will introduce equally interesting characters and ideas. Definitely recommend checking this one out. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finally starting this series! There are two schools of thought on how to read The Craft Sequence: in publication order or in chronological order. Gladstone made it easy to figure out the timeline by putting the appropriate number in the title of each book (for example, this was the first one written but third in chronological order). I decided to start with the first published, but I love the idea of a series that can be read two different ways.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Jaberwocky I'm not big on short fiction either! His novels The City & the City and Kraken are great places to start. Kraken = dark urban fantasy cranked up to 11. I hesitate to call it Urban Fantasy since it takes place in a Fantasy world post a giant event called the God Wars, but it has steam tech and other things that make it feel Urban. Such a unique and wild ride. The ridiculous fire fights made me feel like a kid again watching a cartoon but in the most adult, badass of ways.

Interesting world-building and great ideas meet a book that didn't entirely come together for me. Part legal drama, part mixer mystery, all fantasy, THREE PARTS DEAD is absolutely worth checking out, despite its flaws, if for no other reason than its truly compelling mish-mash of genre conventions into something new. Some of the writing doesn't hold up, but it's a promising start to the series.
