Ruin | Dervla McTiernan
It's been twenty years since Cormac Reilly discovered the body of Hilaria Blake in her crumbling Georgian home. But he's never forgotten the two children she left behind... When Aisling Conroy's boyfriend Jack is found in the freezing black waters of the river Corrib, the police tell her it was suicide. A surgical resident, she throws herself into study and work, trying to forget--until Jack's sister Maude shows up. Maude suspects foul play, and she is determined to prove it. Cormac Reilly is the detective assigned with the re-investigation of a seemingly accidental overdose twenty years ago--the overdose of Jack and Maude's drug and alcohol addled mother. Detective Reilly is under increasing pressure to charge Maude for murder when his colleague Danny uncovers a piece of evidence that will change everything... This unsettling small-town noir draws us deep into the dark heart of Ireland, where corruption, desperation, and crime run rife. A gritty look at trust and betrayal where the written law isn't the only one, The Ruin asks who will protect you when the authorities can't--or won't.

This is an excellent detective/crime story with a fantastic narrator. More so than any other audiobook I‘ve listened to, I envisioned it so clearly like a movie the whole time I was listening.

If you‘re looking for an excellent mystery with suspense, betrayal, and corruption, I highly recommend The Ruin by Dervla McTiernan. It‘s the first installment of the Cormac Reilly Mystery series. I purchased the audiobook from Audible. I loved the beautiful narration by Aoife McMahon. I could listen to her all day!

The reader was great in this book! DI Cormac Reilly has transferred to Galway because of his girlfriends work. The atmosphere at the Garda is strange. He's assigned a cold case that he witnessed 20 years ago. Aisling's boyfriend Jack has committed suicide, his long lost sister Maude returns convinced it was murder. And the cold case revolves around Maude's mothers death.
A really good start to this series! I'll definitely read the next one!

This was the first official book in the Reilly Cormac series. I really enjoyed it but found it a little slow and slightly predictable. It gave a lot of good insight on who the characters are. I am looking forward to the next book tho. 🤓

Cormac Reilly was new to the Garda when he first met 15 year old Maude and her 5 year old brother Jack. Twenty years later, he is newly transferred to Galway and stuck working cold cases when the past resurfaces in unexpected ways. A tense, atmospheric police procedural, and a painful look at the fate of children left unprotected by society.

Went in with low expectations as I downloaded it at Heathrow Airport desperately seeking something to keep me awake. Murder mystery set in and around Galway. Exciting enough with twists and turns. Many TW‘s. Did the job though. Impressive narrator considering the plethora of accents.

I finished a book 🎉. And thoroughly enjoyed it too!

This is set in Galway. A detective returning home, reopens one of his earliest cases following the apparent suicide of one of the children he found that day. But why do the team around him seem to be working against him? And who can he trust?

Not too graphic/gory, but content warnings in comments.

This was a fantastic read, and a gift from Cathy backalong. Thank you @Cathythoughts 🤗

Train reading. Yes, that is a scraggy little palm tree outside the window. I seem to be on a crime thing at the moment- really enjoying this so far.

Following a probable suicide, Cormac Reilly, working on cold cases after a move back to Galway, is asked to reopen one of his earliest cases. But why?

My first completed book of October isn‘t even on my #BookSpin list. (Yay for free spaces). I read this series out of order which made me know more about the storyline about why Cormac doesn‘t fit in with his new police colleagues than I should have if I‘d read this first book first. I did still like the main mystery, and agree that this is a good series for people who enjoy Tana French. The audiobook narrator is great.

LOVED this on audio! This was an audible freebie I downloaded on a whim.

I totally agree with the comparisons to Tana French, and I actually think this series is a great alternative to those who struggle with the DMS books and French's standalones. Seems like McTiernan traded French's world building and atmosphere for a faster pace and more action. Both are great storytellers overall, and this was a win!

The narrator of this book is fantastic! I found a lot of it interesting, but as a whole it left me feeling flat. There‘s a lot happening in this book, and I feel like it‘s almost too much. There are too many threads unraveling, and the ending wasn‘t satisfying. I may or may not listen to the sequel. Probably moving on to something else. #audible #audiobook

This is a good read, if you can handle the claustrophobia of the antagonist being in a position of quite a bit of power, with a conspiracy to back them up. I am going into the sequel hoping that it won‘t perpetuate the cliffhanger, but I‘m iffy about it.

Nervy, haunting & gripping, the plot is strengthened by the alternating male and female narrations with the author giving the character jus the right dab of depth. Scrubbed with the right dose of perfection and flaws to make him redolent, determined and caring, Det Cormac Reilly is a great character to sink one's teeth into.
If you are looking for an utterly compelling & a standout crime thriller read, pick up The Rúin from your local bookstore.

Great for fans of Tana French, this one had me turning pages long after I should have put it down. McTiernan was woven quite the tale and it was fascinating to see it unfold.

My book club is reading the second in the series, I decided to prep myself with this first, my first read of McTiernan.
It is a story of two deaths, how they are connected, and how they are solved. It was really slow, but once the action started I could not put it down. I'm now sure if I was to like Aisling Conroy. The ending was half way predictable, but was still interesting.
I would recommend this to any one that likes detective mysteries.

A competent police procedural with a basic storyline. The only sticking point for me lay in the narration rather than the story - a truly dreadful attempt at an Australian accent.
The story meandered a bit and never really hit that ‘edge of your seat‘ pace which would have made for a far more exciting book. Having said that though, the characterization was good and the plot was sufficiently filled with red herrings / twists that I give it 3 stars.

This was an excellent procedural mystery. There was just the right balance of tension and shock without it getting gory or explicit. I had fun putting the pieces together from the mystery in the past and the current murder, and there were a few reveals that I didn't see coming. I don't think I've read any other mysteries set in Ireland, so that was really interesting as well. The audio version of this is great.

It is a short listen about sisters Carrie and Aifric, both working in criminal justice in Dublin, and who both get involved in the same case of a boyfriend accused of killing his girlfriend. Aifric is on the boyfriend‘s criminal defense team, and Carrie is an officer who finds some evidence that affects the case. I think I‘ll be reading more of this author.

Jumping into #aussieapril with this book, hosted by SixMinsforMe and AllDBooks on YouTube. I was suspicious that it may not be called an Australian book, but Kate at The Novel Nomad on BookTube calls it Australian, so who am I to argue? Really excited to try to read some new -to-me authors from that part of the world. Any Australian authors or books that I simply must read? Anyone else joining in?

CarolynM All the above are at the more literary end. If you like crime try Peter Temple, Garry Disher, Shane Maloney (a particular favourite of mine), Leigh Redhead, Marele Day, Sulari Gentill. 6y
