Reading for results | Laraine E. Flemming
3 posts
The mid-level text of Flemming's successful series, Reading for Results hones students' comprehension skills and introduces them to the basics of critical reading. Featuring the author's trademark high-interest reading selectionsincluding multi-paragraph readings to prepare students for college-level textsthis developmental text motivates students to complete numerous exercises and tests, while simultaneously fostering the idea that reading is a stimulating and exciting activity in its own right. Step by step, students learn strategies for improving their vocabulary and using SQ3R, a well-known system for how to effectively survey, question, read, recite, and recall material from college textbooks. Basic reading skills include how to find main ideas; draw inferences; locate supporting details; and understand charts, graphs, and tables. Two chapters are devoted to patterns of development, one on recognizing patterns in paragraphs and one on combining patterns in paragraphs and longer readings.
