Waterfire Saga, Book One Deep Blue
Waterfire Saga, Book One Deep Blue | Jennifer Donnelly
Deep in the ocean, in a world not so different from our own, live the merpeople. Their communities are spread throughout the oceans, seas, and freshwaters all over the globe. When Serafina, a mermaid of the Mediterranean Sea, awakens on the morning of her betrothal, her biggest worry should be winning the love of handsome Prince Mahdi. And yet Sera finds herself haunted by strange dreams that foretell the return of an ancient evil. Her dark premonitions are confirmed when an assassin's arrow poisons Sera's mother. Now, Serafina must embark on a quest to find the assassin's master and prevent a war between the Mer nations. Led only by her shadowy dreams, Sera searches for five other mermaid heroines who are scattered across the six seas. Together, they will form an unbreakable bond of sisterhood and uncover a conspiracy that threatens their world's very existence.

I wanted to like this, and really it has lots of story points that I SHOULD have liked. But it never really captured my interest.

Six mermaids are summoned by the Iele to protect the realm from a monster. The main character is a princess who has lived her life fairly sheltered up until this point, and is now in a life or death situation.

The world building was okay, but I don‘t know if magic excuses a complete lack of physics 🤣

#PLC #Mermaids

TheAromaofBooks Oh my gosh, I felt the same way when I was reading this - like how are they... setting things down? Sitting on stuff? Etc. I found it very distracting haha 2y

I was going to join in with the #PLC read along for this month but ended up adding this one to my 'Did Not Finish' list. I was excited for mermaids but this one just didn't work for me. I tried both the ebook and audiobook but that didn't help either. After 40% I just couldn't get in to it. I hope others enjoy it more.

So, this is a no for me. If it wasn't a #BookClub read I would have #DNF the book, so it got somewhat interesting but... if you don't plan on reading the next in the series (which I am not interested enough in that) it is really a waste of time. Also maybe because this was #Audio instead of print, but all the names of the places and people got jumbled for me, not sure if the print has some sort of map or something.

#ParanormalLoveCrew (#PLC)

KristiAhlers A member of a book club I belonged to also has a secondary club she reads with and they read this title and not a one liked it. She offered me a copy but I was yeah I‘m good. 3y
ElizaMarie @KristiAhlers haha good choice 3y
RedxoHearts Same here. I just couldn't get into it and kept confusing with all the names they would talk about 3y

So I am about 40% in on this one. It took me a bit to get into it. I almost DNF'd it at around the 20% mark because it felt like too familiar of a story. It still feels that way but it is not peaking my interest. I have 4 loads of laundry to fold and put away today. So I will be listening along :)

TheAromaofBooks I enjoyed this series more as it went along - to me, Deep Blue definitely felt like a First Book of a Series(TM) setting things up. 3y

Review time!! I'm a little behind!! This was my final read of 2021. I was just in the mood for something not romance lol I have had this series out from the library for a while so thought I would delve in, and I have really been enjoying them. The world-building is a little stuttered sometimes - I am frequently confused about how certain objects are behaving in the water, if that makes sense - but overall solid YA fantasy with a fun, underwater⬇️

4✨I wish there was a little more back story, but loved this underwater world! We are surrounded by mermaids, one of them being a princess,Sera, set to take the throne. When a rebel force attacks the kingdom Sera flees and finds some friends she‘s destined to be with. This was on my TBR for #WinterGames2021 #TeamGameSleighers and #AnywayYouReadathon for 4hr and 50mins

This book is connected to the real world because everyone can have problems, maybe your parents have died because of a killer, or maybe you may have nightmares because of stress, thinking that you are going to fail because of something like a test. All these problems that we have happened to Serafina, Serafina was really stressed for the ceremony, and she got nightmares, and her parents died at the ceremony, because of an assassin.

This book completely fell flat for me. The plot was uninteresting and I did not care about the characters at all. I am surprised I even made it halfway through the book because it was so unimpressive. The main character was the cliche princess who did not want to be a princess and I am sick of this character trope being used.

We did not get along, this book and I. I didn‘t like the characters - a lot of time was wasted trying to figure out if the guy liked the girl and eating the mermaid version of sweets while mean girls said mean things. I got a little excited when the action started but it got too messy when I couldn‘t remember all the characters. Then the ending.

A world that is as stunning as that cover, omg 😍😍 Donnelly totally succeeded in creating a vivid and unique underwater society, rich with its own customs and practices, and yet at the same time also incredibly relatable to us today. I loved the plot and the writing style and the characters, and totally got swept up in the story. This book toes the line between MG and YA, but is a great and refreshing take on the mermaid plot for all.

Wasn‘t sure what I was getting into with this YA but I opened the cover and there were gorgeous maps of mer-societies in all the oceans and I‘m like yes, this is happening. Good decision on my part. This book gives an amazingly different background to the history of Atlantis and the creation of merfolk. I‘m happy I already have the sequel!

Good read! Its starts off a little slow while characters are being introduced, but I feel like you need that background to understand what is happening later on in the book. There are words from different languages being used all over and sometimes it can be hard to follow. Most of them can be understood in context, but some of them it is helpful to look up in the glossary. The language made it more immersive, but difficult to keep up with.

ReadingRover I went to a children‘s book fair today in upstate NY and got to meet this author. She was super nice! 7y

Although, I'm not quite finished with it yet. I absolutely love it, it's a quick read and I love fantasy but this is my first mermaid read and I'm loving it. It's a cross between fantasy/myth/legends and is all and all a good read. So far it's a page turner and keeps you on your toes with every plot twist.. of Pirates, assassins.. landlubbers.. dragons.. it's a must read!

Not a bad series. I felt like it had to many characters however. Instead of the chosen six, there should have been only three or four. Then it could have focus more on how the friendship developed for it seemed to just happen over night with some. Over all it wasn't bad but it's definitely for the younger audiences.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. While it does hold to some of the normal YA tropes, I love that it focuses on female friendships and the importance of working as a group and supporting people. The world building is good, the characters are well done and it's well written. Im not a huge #mermaid fan, but I'm glad I read this book. 3/5 stars
