Why, yes, I did order a replacement copy of one of my all-time favorite books for my library so that it has a better cover. 🙌

mdemanatee Man I still have the hardcover of this one 3y
GirlNamedJesse @mdemanatee Me, too! In my personal collection, anyway. It was out of print with our vendor when I purchased the replacement. :( 3y
mdemanatee @GirlNamedJesse I‘m glad it‘s still kicking! I remember I read A Northern Light in either 8th grade or as a Freshman but it was the Tea Rose that really got me. I should revisit that sometime 3y

I have had this book for a few years, glad I read it now! Set in two timelines, Andi lives in Brooklyn with her mum with heartbroken over the death of Truman, brother and son. Her father left them and she may be about to get expelled from school. Her father returns and takes her to Paris. Alexandrine lives at the time of the French revolution, we learn about her life, through a dairy Andi finds. I enjoyed it and love any story set in Paris! #books

I kept trying, despite my immediate dislike, but 41 pages in and I just can‘t get into it. I‘ve had this ARC forever. I read These Shallow Graves a couple years ago and it was ok, but should have been better. This one, I‘m really struggling with all the substance abuse. It‘s one of my triggers - I hate YA that normalizes drug use. Giving up and looking for something else.

(Disclaimer: I listened to the audio) Revolution was an odd, but beautifully written, story about a young girl who travels to Paris with her father and in her attempts to revolt against parental guidance, finds friendship, love, and a connection with a girl of similar age from the French Revolution through a diary. Some parts were a bit fantastical, but overall, the book had a good rhythm and proper balance of detail.

Overall, I liked this book. I felt some of the language in the diary entries was too modern for Revolution era France, and there was a part at the end where I was to seriously suspend some disbelief (I think the book as a whole would have been better without that part), but I did and still enjoyed it. There were a lot of parts I absolutely loved, and a few that made me roll my eyes. Overall, a good read. 3/5🌟

claffy_reads I really loved huge portions of Revolution, but I agree, the end and the journal entries were the weak parts of the story. I feel like it would make a good movie though. 7y
PenguinInFlight @callielafleur There was so much I loved, and then BAM! Totally pulled away from the magic, LOL. I can definitely see it as a movie...I think it would be amazing. I‘m starting Shallow Graves now, by the same author. 7y

Interesting...there were parts I liked, parts I loved and parts I hated. I wish the exploration of the French Revolution would've been more than just the last 1/4 of the book. The main character is...boy oh boy...she is the definition of baggage and I kinda hated her. I wanted more of the historical stuff and less of the inner blaming of tragedy (it got pretty exhausting very quickly). Really interesting info about music!

Chasing_Pages I just finished this on audio and completely agree with your review. I loved the Alex parts a lot more than the Andy parts, but I too was more interested in the revolution aspect. 7y

I listened to this on audio and really enjoyed the two narrators for the two POV. I love the intermixing of the two time periods and how relatable the two girls are to each other with two centuries between them. I gave this book 3.5-4 ⭐️

This was a very intriguing book that managed to meld both modern reality and historical events seamlessly. The main character is quite flawed, but she finds a girl quite like her who lived during the French Revolution. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning of new and more in-depth ways to learn about historical events.

This is my pick for #TravelingTuesday for so many reasons. After a tragedy strikes, Andi‘s estranged dad makes her travel with him from New York to Paris. There she finds a diary of a girl living during French Revolution times and gets caught in her story. There may be some time travel (or is there?)

Also, I was on a plane traveling to my first conference (YA Lit) when I started this book and finished it before I returned home. #TRW2017

Loving #PhotoADayNov16. Found MANY #OneWordTitles...

I read this intriguing piece of historical fiction back in 2010. Loved how modern-day Andi defied cliche of depressed teen, and Donnelly's skill at weaving Andi's storyline with a character from 1795 France was impressive. And ambiguous. Was I reading about time travel or black outs? Loved it!

I remembered that I was going to read more Donnelly; I haven't. Should I pick up The Tea Rose next?

He clicks his tongue. The fables have failed you. Once upon a time never was. There's no kindly huntsman. No fairy godmother. There's only the wolf. Grown bold now, he strolls the streets of Paris picking his teeth with an infant's rib. Nothing changes, Sparrow.
