I feel like Momoko probably grew up to become Aggretsuko. She surely wouldn‘t work hard enough promoting her Lolita lifestyle to become an instagram influencer and would probably fall into some kind of basic work after school, when she finally ran out of knock-off luxury goods to sell on the underground market, earning just enough to support her luxury clothes habit, but also creating suppressed rage at her place in ‘the system‘ of work.

Another adult fiction featuring a single-ish woman seeking a mystery to distract her from the scattered mess of her daily life - a fine alternative to the old trope of literally running away from your family, whether that's to find yourself through massage and restrictive diets or by recreating an iconic road trip that did not really happen.

Revolution | Jennifer Donnelly

Theater kids, musicians, outsiders who want to be part of something, goodies who wonder what kind of adventures they might be missing out on - Ghosts, time travel, an unidentified piece of a possibly royal corpse, and a party in the Paris Catacombs. Was going to throw this up for #nakedhardcovers yesterday, but as it's purple, I saved it for today. Wonderful adventure for everyone who wishes investigating hauntings could have gotten them extra credit in school.

Everyman's Library 100 Titles Set | Various, Everyman's Library
post image

This might feel like a cheat since so many Everyman's Library and Library of America titles are sold naked, but many come with lovely jackets with thematic spine art. This copy of A Tale of Two Cities has a false front, with a face and front flap jacketed by plastic film rather than a full paper jacket. #nakedhardcovers #bookstagram #riotgrams #analog #oldbooks

If you thought the 1993 film 'The Road to Wellville' didn't adequately address the wider implications of #wellness along with late 19th century English issues with orphans, serial killers, or scones, then this is the book for you! Whitechapel murders are a mere annoyance compared to the very real threats of violent gangs and yoghurt-obsessed Americans.

I implore you all, if you appreciate fine books, get thee to ye bookery and acquire this glorious volume. Whether you define 'fine' as 'superior quality' or 'excellent' or even 'consisting of minute particles' this book fulfills every role. The matte cover and cut foil are a pleasure to the eye, the delicate pages a treasure to the fingertips, and the story is as richly satisfying as water to the parched tongue. #thehazelwood @flatironbooks

Thoroughly enjoyed this - not a classically happy ending, but an altogether positive one, in spite of the mountain of unanswered questions. Some secrets die with the souls that lived them, and that may be for the best.

Every time I read this I think 'Dinah, Dinah, Dinah!' And how if everything is about that cat, what a peaceful life and dearth of chores she must have had.

#recommendsday! For the first recommendsday in National American Indian Heritage Month I offer this title. No grand history of any particular region, this chronology is just that: a clear, concise timeline of central North American cultures from roughly 28,000 BCE through the mid-90s. A useful reference for maintaining perspective of cultural development over time.

Enjoyable, rather sweeping history of a city told through the lens of an heir to a founding family. I read this by audio, and found the narrator to be an excellent fit for the story, with a gentle timbre and steady cadence.
Solid 3 stars, I found the author fair and even in her characterizations, the pacing mostly steady, and the timeline generally easy to follow between then and now.

The Uses of Literacy | Richard Hoggart
post image

We have this concept, culturally, that literacy is what happens when you teach children to read; but if those children grow up to be adults who only use their literacy skills to write T.P.S. Reports or read the instructions on a microwave ready meal then we have still failed them.

In many ways this is a study read, a bit slow going if you are not already familiar with the Bay Colony principal families; a well-researched and delightfully footnoted history of power politics, religious fervor, and the eternal struggles of society to isolate and persecute the 'other' in it's midst.

A tale of rage and shame that has come up often since 1692, as the social struggles of resentment and blame are as true now as they were then.

The Smell of Other People's Houses | Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock
post image
Pickpick

A tale of love, loss, disappointment, betrayal, hope, fear, and despair; rage, anguish, and misdirected self-sacrifice; greed, poverty, and hopelessness. Lessons are spoken, unspoken, illustrated with the smooth hand of a narrator telling a tale with no judgment. The reader is left with a journey of broken lives stitched together with a waxed thread of coincidence, tenacity, and good luck, even if they don't see themselves as lucky at the time.
