Now available in paperback--The Mummy Congress is "clear, direct and intense . . . all the stories sparkle. Pringle is a crack-shot storyteller." --New York Times Book Review Perhaps the most eccentric of all scientific meetings, the World Congress on Mummy Studies brings together mummy experts from all over the globe and airs their latest findings. Who are these scientists, and what draws them to this morbid yet captivating field? A dark and stormy morning seems like the perfect time to finish a book entirely about mummies!

I learned so much from this book! About parasites, peat bogs, civilizations of long ago, the monetary aspect of death and preservation of bodies, and possible future death practices… so much info here!

It‘s a strange and dark topic, but if you‘re curious at all I‘d recommend this one! Thanks for the loan and rec @Eyelit !

julesG It's been on my wishlist-TBR for ages. 3y
Soubhiville @julesG I may try to find myself a copy to refer back to. I don‘t know why I find this topic fascinating. 3y
julesG Mummies have fascinated me ever since I saw my first at age 8. My class visited a baroque castle/mini-palace and it was the only "odd" item in the collection. Okay, thinking about it right now, there were Chinese vases and Italian marble statues, too. So probably not that odd, but unexpected. Anyway, I've been interested in them and archaeology since then. 3y

julesG Yeah! It's on kindle offer over here. Got it for €1.49 instead of a "used copy" for €66.95 ??? 3y
Soubhiville @julesG whoa that‘s steep for used! Glad you found it! 3y
Shemac77 I loved this book! 3y

Tons of fascinating stuff in this one -- just the kind of archaeology book I like, one which discusses all sorts of sites and circumstances.

I cannot recommend reading the chapters 'The Dissector's Knife' or 'Hosts' during dinner.
