The Last Time I Lied
The Last Time I Lied: A Novel | Riley Sager
In the new novel from the bestselling author of Final Girls, The Last Time I Lied follows a young woman as she returns to her childhood summer camp to uncover the truth about a tragedy that happened there fifteen years ago. Two Truths and a Lie. The girls played it all the time in their tiny cabin at Camp Nightingale. Vivian, Natalie, Allison, and first-time camper Emma Davis, the youngest of the group. The games ended when Emma sleepily watched the others sneak out of the cabin in the dead of night. The last she--or anyone--saw of them was Vivian closing the cabin door behind her, hushing Emma with a finger pressed to her lips. Now a rising star in the New York art scene, Emma turns her past into paintings--massive canvases filled with dark leaves and gnarled branches that cover ghostly shapes in white dresses. The paintings catch the attention of Francesca Harris-White, the socialite and wealthy owner of Camp Nightingale. When Francesca implores her to return to the newly reopened camp as a painting instructor, Emma sees an opportunity to try to find out what really happened to her friends. Yet it's immediately clear that all is not right at Camp Nightingale. Already haunted by memories from fifteen years ago, Emma discovers a security camera pointed directly at her cabin, mounting mistrust from Francesca and, most disturbing of all, cryptic clues Vivian left behind about the camp's twisted origins. As she digs deeper, Emma finds herself sorting through lies from the past while facing threats from both man and nature in the present. And the closer she gets to the truth about Camp Nightingale, the more she realizes it may come at a deadly price.

Fifteen years ago, Emma's three cabinmates at summer camp disappeared in the night without a trace. Em is still haunted by that event. When the camp's owner decides to reopen the camp, she invites Em to come as an art instructor and Emma agrees, wondering if this could bring her the closure she needs. But of course instead things get really scary haha As with the other Sager books I've read, when I got done I still had a few questions, but ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) while I was reading it I was completely engaged. The pacing is great, and despite not being sure what Emma was holding back as a narrator, I still liked her.

Happy Saturday!! 🧡🎃 October is my favorite month so I‘m doing some giveaways! 🎈🎊📚🎈🎊📚

Unfortunately it is for US only due to shipping costs 😫 I have some cool bookmarks for international members though!

To be entered for this book answer the following question! What has been your favorite thriller so far this year?!

KadaGul Fall 🍁 arrives when your house 🏠 is decorated. My friend starts decorating at the end of August, so fall 🍁 comes early to her house 🏠 😁😁. 2mo

julieclair I don‘t think I‘ve read any thrillers this year! Unless you count (Count) Dracula 🧛, which I‘m reading now. I‘ve read quite a few cozy mysteries, but in my mind, they don‘t count as thrillers. 2mo

This was a slow pick and not among my favorite summer camp murder mysteries. 15 years have passed and the MC returns to the location of her fateful summer when her 3 older camp mates were lost to the wilderness . I just kept thinking, ‘So, you crushed on a 19-yo college boy and he unwittingly broke your 13-yo heart. Now you find out he was eyeing you back then, and your current heart‘s aflutter. I think that‘s ick!‘

June #BookSpin

TheAromaofBooks Yeah that's not actually a good thing 😬 5mo
marleed @TheAromaofBooks It wasn‘t really a plot point for the story, but bringing it up just didn‘t sit right with me and I couldn‘t let it go. 5mo
TheAromaofBooks I definitely get that way sometimes, like something that gives me the ick, and that's what I end up taking away from the story even if the rest worked out just fine. 5mo

The perfect thriller to read in Summer. Emma went to a camp when she was 13. Her three roommates went missing. They completely vanished. 15 years later, Franny, the owner of the camp, decides to open it. She invites Emma to be an instructor. Emma sizes the opportunity to investigate why her friends went missing 15 years ago.

Love his thrillers and this was crazy-good! Camp Nightingale…now and then. Emma is invited back after 3 girls disappeared over 15 years ago. What has changed besides the creepy legends that linger? Suspenseful and intriguing, this novel kept me up long into the night!😱

This one just did not do it for me. The premise, young Emma‘s perspective/recollection and a couple of the twists were good. But the behavior of …most… of the characters is so inconsistent. Minute to minute accusing eachother of murder/misdeeds, blurting out every half thought out suspect and motive (including one‘s from 1904) but then missing the very obvious and running around half cocked… infuriatinggggg.

This is my second Riley Sager book and I‘m liking it, but not loving it! I‘m just ready to finish it. Emma, the MC, is so annoying! I just want to know what happened!

Ummm meh? Anyone else get Pretty Little Liar vibes from this?
I found the MC fairly unreal- her thoughts, her actions, it just didn't add up for me. Also the various twists in the mystery were kind of more annoying than anything especially when the "first big one"(?) just fizzled out. Like poof, oh no that's really nothing. Oh ok.
I finished it, wasn't terrible but all I'll remember is mean girls at camp and shit goes wrong.

2022 Reads continued......

LTIL - better than LED, as usual with his novels the last 3rd is better, I can usually guess who the culprit is from about a 3rd in, and then the final twist throws you.I still think HBD is his best work to date. Will read THATL when its a cheap £1.99. Riley Sager is always a great holiday quick read.

Between getting COVID,followed by my husband, then going out of town for my father-in-law‘s funeral, my reading life has been almost non-existent lately. I‘m finally back home and feeling well again today, so the first thing on my agenda was to finally finish this book which I started way back on May 31st. I‘d heard so much about Riley Sager that maybe this book was a little over-hyped for me. It ended up being fine but nothing memorable about it.

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ The writing is done well enough. As you read, you may smell the campfire burning underneath the evening sky, hear mosquitoes buzzing amidst children‘s laughter, & feel the coolness of a breeze drifting across Lake Midnight. The book was entertaining, & I found it to be a quick read. However, as a mystery/suspense story, I wanted more of a plot twist. I found the ending predictable, which was disappointing. 📄: 370

I wanted a spooky read and “The Last I Lied” gave me chills throughout the book. The amount of plot twists throughout the book kept me guessing until the very end, and even then the outcome wasn‘t what I expected! Sager did a great job of weaving the mystery throughout the book while filling the multiple plot holes; plus that ending was killer 😏

I am way disappointed in Riley! This book was no where near as good as any of the others. I didn‘t care for any of the people in this book. There was way too much repetition and dragging stuff out. Main protagonist was the most annoying ever! Too many unbelievable situations and reactions.
