False Report: A True Story of Rape in America
False Report: A True Story of Rape in America | Ken Armstrong, T Christian Miller
85 posts | 65 read | 180 to read
Two Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists tell the riveting true story of Marie, a teenager who was charged with lying about having been raped, and the detectives who followed a winding path to arrive at the truth. On August 11, 2008, eighteen-year-old Marie reported that a masked man broke into her apartment near Seattle, Washington, and raped her. Within days police and even those closest to Marie became suspicious of her story: details of the crime didn't seem plausible and her foster mother thought she sounded as though she were reciting a Law & Order episode. The police swiftly pivoted and began investigating Marie. Confronted with inconsistencies in her story and the doubts of others, Marie broke down and said her story was a lie--a bid for attention. Police charged Marie with false reporting. One of Marie's best friends created a web page branding her a liar. More than two years later, Colorado detective Stacy Galbraith was assigned to investigate a case of sexual assault. Describing the crime to her husband that night--the attacker's calm and practiced demeanor, which led the victim to surmise "he's done this before"--Galbraith learned that the case bore an eerie resemblance to a rape that had taken place months earlier in a nearby town. She joined forces with the detective on that case, Edna Hendershot, and the two soon realized they were dealing with a serial rapist: a man who photographed his victims, threatening to release the images online, and whose calculated steps to erase all physical evidence suggested he might be a soldier or a cop. Through meticulous police work the detectives would eventually connect the rapist to other attacks in Colorado--and beyond. Based on investigative files and extensive interviews with the principals, A False Report is a serpentine tale of doubt, lies, and a hunt for justice, unveiling the disturbing reality of how sexual assault is investigated today--and the long history of skepticism toward rape victims.

The #AsheCoNCReading Challenge has 50 categories. I am SO CLOSE!! I especially want to support Ashe County with all that has happened there with Hurricane Helene.
This satisfies the True Crime category. Confession: I do not enjoy (if that is the right word?!) reading True Crime. I feel that this is such an important issue and concern for women.

#IdiomInsight

The meaning of the idiom #CryWolf is to lie. This phrase refers to a person who lies or complains about something even though no real problems are present.

Police charged an 18-year-old woman with filing a false report about being raped. 2-years later 2 female investigators in another state working on a serial rapist case proved she wasn‘t crying wolf. I thought both the book & the Netflix mini-series Unbelievable were well done.

Eggs Fascinating turn of events -sounds compelling. Well done 👌🏼 1y
DebinHawaii @Eggs It‘s a tough read & watch but yes, very compelling. 1y
TheLudicReader I just watched the series a couple weeks ago and thought it was fantastic. Frustrating and maddening but really well done. 1y

So so so heartbreaking. I cannot fathom how some of the investigators involved were so willing to write off a victim. I‘m also very thankful for stubborn and headstrong investigators that refuse to give up and fight tooth and nail for victims. I feel like this should be a required reading for police and detectives. Very good but made me angry.

I read the tagged book over a year ago and it stayed at the forefront of my mind. I spent yesterday bingeing on the Netflix limited series based on the book. Heartbreaking, infuriating, disturbing & shocking miscarriage of justice on a rape case. Unbelievable is the right word. And yes, this is the story on Netflix's miniseries, Unbelievable.

Mitch Agreed - it was all those emotions to the max! 5y
LoverOfLearning Fantastic and much needed book! I was honestly surprised that someone else read it and admitted that they read it. I work as a sexual assault advocate and I went to a conference in Chicago in 2017 where I met these authors. I have a signed copy of their book! Have you seen the Nexflix show called Unbelievable? It's based on the research of this book. I loved the show, I just hope Netflix gave credit to these two authors. 5y
thereadingowlvina @LoverOfLearning No, I have not watch the miniseries yet. I'm afraid it'll be too emotional for me because I had a hard time reading the book. The miscarriage of justice was appalling! Yes, I agree with you that it is a much needed book & I think everyone should read it 🙂 5y

thereadingowlvina @LoverOfLearning And it's so cool you get to meet these authors! Uncovering hard truth like this case and writing about it is not an easy task. So kudos on them! 😁👍 5y
LoverOfLearning @thereadingowlvina Yes it was a very hard book to read. The show was absolutely gut-wrenching at times, I have to admit. But the filmmakers show cases the different trauma types of trauma so beautifully and accurately. I'm glad the world is viewing the show because it is eye-opening and people need to start caring more about trauma and sexual assault and the survivors who come out of it. 5y
thereadingowlvina @LoverOfLearning Yes, I agree that more care, empathy and understanding should be shown towards the survivors. I'm glad that the book did not focus heavily on Marc O'Leary but Marie and other survivors. I really appreciate that the authors did that. 5y
LoverOfLearning I absolutely agree. Glad to find another advocate among our society! 5y

This was a fabulously, well reported story. It was also a really upsetting read, but I think there is a lot of good that comes out of it (changes in procedures/investigation techniques, etc.)

It isn't my most eloquent review, but I think I'm just spent. It can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2982892279

abookishbutterfly I read this when it was published under a different title and thought it was an excellent book. 5y
Hazel0303 @Butterflyamore The title I had was The False Report, but everything keeps defaulting to Unbreakable so I thought I would use the picture most associate with it now. It really was incredible. I think my next True Crime read is going to be American Predator. 5y
abookishbutterfly @Hazel0303 Oh, I see now that the tagged book is A False Report! I just noticed the picture initially. I saw this new cover at Walmart the other day and I was briefly excited, thinking they‘d written another book together. Then I realized it was the same book. “In 2004, a convicted sex offender was tried and found guilty of Patty‘s rape.”

This is real. This is not fiction. This is ridiculous. This is disgusting. What else can I really say? You can see how absurd it is. But it is the horrific reality for so many victims.

wanderinglynn And it continues to happen every day. Victims treated as guilty, not believed, even incarcerated for filing “false” reports. PDs downgrading the crime or not investigating. It‘s a sad statement of our so-called justice system. 6y

Trigger Warning: Child molestation

I‘ll put my thoughts in the comments with a spoiler tag. Read only if you are okay doing so.

abookishbutterfly
This is a case of child molestation. The teen was found guilty and families in the neighborhood blamed the detective for this. Not the teen who was found guilty. The cop.

This isn‘t surprising. This isn‘t a new thing. When people don‘t want to see the truth, the find someone else to blame. Often enough, it‘s the victim, which may have happened here as well, but it sounds like the detective took the brunt of it.
6y
candority I‘m not familiar with the book or the case, but that is ridiculous 😡 the only person to blame is the perpetrator. 6y
abookishbutterfly @candority Oh, I agree but this exemplifies one of the major social issues we have. They don‘t believe that he actually did anything. That‘s why the blame someone else for simply ruining his bright future. They contort the truth and make it seem like the perp has been victimized. It‘s all too common. 😥 6y

I feel empathy for the teen who was pressured into stating that her story was a lie. She was then charged for filing a false report! Until the truth was discovered, she faced further humiliation.

Can you imagine being called a liar after such a traumatic violation? Can you imagine having to live with that & not being able to seek help?

Sadly, I know as I ask these questions that there is a possibility that you can, indeed, imagine it. #believe

I am a sensitive reader and this is well written as to describe the actions of the rapist while being sensitive to the horrific trauma of the rapes. This is literally my worst nightmare. This is why victims and survives do not come forward. This is recent. The authors (both male) did their research and worked with a lot of women to get the story right. Being narrated by a woman benefited the story.

My God, this is an awful tale - but a great book! I can‘t believe how easy it is to think a woman reporting a rape must be lying, and how hard it is to get over not being believed.

While this book deals with a heavy subject, it also shows how great police and detectives can be when they actually believe their victims, and are willing to cooperate. More of that please!

This is a great example of well researched and well written nonfiction about a tough topic. True crime rarely centers around rape unless it is a part of a murder, etc. This really focuses on a serial rapist and his crimes. The book follows some of his victims and their stories. The authors do a great job of showing an imperfect system combined with the hard topic of false reporting of rape. Well researched and excellent writing! #goodreadsgiveaway

What a phenomenal book! As scary as it is, it is crucial to understanding how rape & its victims are viewed in this country & what we can do to combat rape culture. Parts of the book being from the rapists point of view, provide a unique perspective into the mind of those who seem to have the natural inclination to rape & how there isn‘t a safe place for offenders to go to seek preventative help if they know they‘re having unhealthy fantasies.

Samplergal It‘s on my list. I‘m hesitant to read because I was date raped in 1977. I never dreamt to report it. He was a family member of Ted Turner. Yes. That one. So reporting was out of the question. #meToo 6y
MyNamesParadise @Samplergal I‘m so sorry that happened! ☹️ This book would definitely trigger you I think because this book while fascinating, was terrifying, at least to me. :/ to know there are ppl out there who (not only date rape) but in the case of this rapist started having these violent fantasies at the age of 5, it‘s unsettling to say the least. 6y

It's not a spoiler because the profile blurb says that an 18-year-old from Washington reports a rape & with the police disbelieving, she recants & is charged false reporting. In Colorado a rape is investigated & a serial rapist identified that proves Marie's account. This book is excellent but the subject so frustrating & disturbing.😡😣

Hooked_on_books It‘s a terrific book. And I fully agree—so frustrating! But I‘m really glad that this type of situation, not believing rape victims, is being talked about. 7y
Jess7 Ohh this is on my TBR radar! I want to read this one! 7y

Tonight's dinner and book. This is one of those 'needs to be used' up dinners. I seasoned some local fish (monchong) I needed to cook with curry & other spices & cooked it in some of the lemon-garlic oil I made this weekend, then threw the leftover peas in the same pan to warm them up. Then I served it with brown jasmine rice, topped with tamed pickled jalapeños just because I'm addicted. ?It was really good. This book is really good too.

Tonight's book and snack. The topic of this one is tough--rape and the way sexual assaults are investigated, but it is really interesting and well-written. It seems like there are so many great non-fiction books lately.

MarriedtoMrT Yes! I loved this book. 7y
SamHeartCoffee Looks heavy. And I hear you on the non-fiction front! 7y

I couldn't seem to settle on a book tonight--I tried three before this one. It's good so far but I don't know how much longer I can stay awake. Also, I may be eating my feelings with this caramel-pretzel Klondike bar... 😋

DebinHawaii @Cinfhen Hey, yes it's on The Bug Island so at this point not a threat here. They've evacuated a couple thousand people there in the communities around it. Scary to see on the news though. Thanks for checking on me. 😘❤️❤️ 7y
Cinfhen Oh good!!! I was worried about you and especially your asthma 7y

#ReadingResolutions #MayTBR

I shouldn't call this pic of all of these books my May #TBR as we all know I'll never get them all read & it doesn't include my Kindle & 4 #ARCs on there, audiobooks & 2 books for May book tour reviews that haven't arrived yet.😬Some of these I've started & I'm hoping to get them finished & I will finish the review books on the left. Well, at least my inner moody reader has choices!

Pickpick

Obvious triggers for sexual assault galore, but if you can stomach it— wow. Quite an in-depth true crime detailing the lives of serial rapist Mark O‘Leary and his victims. Along the way the authors touch on how high the numbers are for falsely reported rapes and how history plays into the bias of investigators. I had a hard time putting this down. The telling is so well done as the narrative weaves between cases and character histories.

Pickpick

first heard about Marie 's story from the
Heartbreaking ProPublica story, and I often wondered about her and how she was doing, so I was glad to see that this had been made. A False Report is not an easy read, especially when the narration focuses on Marc. I wish this was not a relevant read, but it obviously is. The authors did a good job balancing a non-biased almost scientific tone while still humanizing all parties involved.
