Incredibly fun read. I happily had to do lots of research on the French Revolution, Algiers, and chess! You do have to tremendously suspend your disbelief--but the fun read is worth it. Could definitely read again--just for the history alone.

Woohoo!! I finished this one!! I think the “official“ #chunksterchallenge is anything over 800 pages, but for my personal 2022 challenge, I'm counting anything over 500 pages - these are books I've been putting off the last couple of years because of trying to hit my GR goal. This year, I've set my goal to 50 and even though I spent an entire week reading this one, I'm still 7 books ahead of schedule 😂 Anyway, this book! I loved it! Although it ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) was one of those books that did sometimes make me feel a little dumb. There is a lot going on here, and a lot of math, music, history, and chess - and I'm not particularly an expert on any of those! But the dual storylines really worked here, and I found myself very invested in both timelines. The ending felt almost too tidy, as a lot of complications got tied up quickly, but I'm a big fan of HEA, so I'm always willing to give a little ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) leeway there!! All in all a really enjoyable read and one I can see myself picking up again. I'm planning to read the sequel this week!!

#JumpStart2022 @Clwojick @Lizpixie
#Pantone2022 - Harbour Blue - it actually matched in real life 😂@Clwojick
#RoadTripUSA2022 - New York @megnews
#19822022 - 1988 (I actually hadn't realized this book was so old!) @Librarybelle
#AestheticallyMatched @Clwojick
#RoaringWolf - Hello @Roary47 @Littlewolf1
3y
TheAromaofBooks #WickedWords - @AsYouWish - I can't remember, does the word need to actually be in the title, or does the book just need to “match“ in some way? I.e., this cover is blue, so does it count for blue? 3y

Lizpixie Nice work!🙌 3y
AsYouWish @TheAromaofBooks It just needs to relate in some way, blue color on cover counts!!!!💙💙💙💙 3y
TheAromaofBooks @AsYouWish - Sweet!! I couldn't remember what the exact rules were! 😂 3y
AsYouWish @TheAromaofBooks The rules are flexible - it is just a fun way to get those books off our TBRs or a way to help pick books to read when we are stuck. 😁 3y
Librarybelle Oh! A 1980s one! Excellent! 3y

#BookReport - Still working my way through the tagged... the orchard is winding down fast, so there has been a lot of end-of-season stuff going on, plus I'm way into my current rendition of Stardew Valley 😂 I am staying on top of my chapter-a-day reads (not pictured) - David Copperfield, Wuthering Heights, The Story Girl, Pinocchio (more like 3-5 chapters a day on that one, so short), and my current nonfiction read, The Year-Round Vegetable ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Gardener, which is all about extending your growing seasons via cold frames, row covers, etc. The garden is due for a big renovation this spring, so I'm researching ways to improve the layout and overall usefulness of the space. I've decided not to return to my greenhouse job, so I'm hoping to have more time to devote to my home gardens this spring.

I've been surprised at how much I have been enjoying both David Copperfield & Wuthering⬇
3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Heights, although for completely different reasons. David Copperfield is surprisingly warm and humorous, despite all of David's many trials. Wuthering Heights is just honestly so ridiculous. I remember reading this in high school and wishing everyone would die of the plague - I still feel that way, but it's also like watching a slow-motion train wreck, if the train was full of terrible people 😂

@Cinfhen
3y
IndoorDame I love The Eight! 3y

Daisey Yes, I feel much the same about Wuthering Heights. I did not enjoy it the first time just because there was absolutely no one to like. This time I‘m reading with a different view, appreciating the writing, and accepting that all the characters are awful! 3y
vlwelser The Eight ❤ I still need to read The Fire. Which I have on my shelf but haven't been motivated to read. 3y
Cinfhen Windowsill looking nice and full 😁😉😘 3y
rabbitprincess I love that cow mug on the right! Also I binged my main Stardew save yesterday (where I married Harvey) and caught one of the legendary fish!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @IndoorDame @vlwelser - I'm really enjoying The Eight when I can sit down and focus on it for big chunks. Since a lot of my reading is in bits and pieces through the day, it's taking me a while to get through it, but I do like it!! And I'm looking forward to reading the sequel, although I might fit a few lighter books in first!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - I gotta get that windowsill winnowed down a little before I add my February books to it! 😂 3y
TheAromaofBooks @rabbitprincess - lately my husband has been playing through Farcry 6 so I started a new SV farm (the one with the islands) and almost through Fall of the first year. I might marry Sebastian this time - Shane was my first love 😂 3y
rabbitprincess @TheAromaofBooks Haha I almost married Shane because his sprite is the cutest, but Harvey likes planes 🥰🥰🥰 I played my Beach farm today and will be marrying Maru in that one (but I‘m dating both her and Harvey because I can 🤣) 3y
TheAromaofBooks @rabbitprincess - I love getting all of them to 8 hearts and then deciding what to do haha I guess I will just have to keep starting new farms so I can marry everyone at different times... I know you can divorce and remarry but that just doesn't fit with my happy SV vibe! Also I still haven't caught any of the legendary fish, so that's pretty fantastic for you!! 3y
rabbitprincess @TheAromaofBooks Same, I could never divorce any of them! I have to come up with different protagonists for each one, like Elliott gives me Beauty and the Beast vibes so he should marry Belle 🤣 3y
TheAromaofBooks @rabbitprincess - LOL same!!! 😂 My newest character is totally different from the one who married Shane! 3y

#JoyousJanuary starts tomorrow!! I've been slowing working my way through the tagged book this week - too many other books going on at the same time has made this one a bit of a struggle. I'm enjoying it, but there are a lot of threads going on, and I just haven't been able to devote big chunks of time like it deserves!! So my goal is to finish this one - I'm about halfway now, so that feels doable - and to read one of the shorter books from my ⬇

To be fair, I also really liked the first time that I read it. This is historical fiction with chess, adventure, intrigue, romance, and alchemy. Among other things. I highly recommend it. I'm going to finally read the sequel also, but not right this second.

2 timelines looking for a chess set that holds the mystery of life. I liked the past timeline the best and could have done without the other. As you move through time you recognize people from history and everyone is looking for this chess set. Does come together at the end but I just thought it was a bit too long for me. Frodo took too long finding the ring, Cat in the Eight took too long in this to find the ♟

I finished this a day or two ago & have been trying to decide what to say. Likes: strong female characters, a juicy conspiracy, lots of history, fabulous locations. Dislikes: no one would give Cat any info, a lot of the math & chess discussions went over my head, the sheer number of famous historical figures involved in The Game began to feel improbable, it was too loong! Mostly a pick but I'm not su0re I'd search out her other books.

This is up next because Grandma thinks I'll like it. We'll see. Sometimes we LOVE the same books. Other times, it's like we're on different planets.

Mariposa_Bookworm I have two copies of this. My mom's book club read it eons ago. My aunt never reads the books so I always get her copy. Somehow I ended up with both. I always keep them because they came from my mommy. 8y

megt This was assigned as a summer reading book for one of my high school courses ages ago. I never did finish it (I hated being told what to read, even if they were books I ended up liking) but I remember being totally engrossed in it for awhile. It was an impulsive buy (much like what i do whenever i wander into a bookstore) but had left me fascinated with French Revolution, certain Russian Grand Master, and the hope that someday i will have my own library. I have learned so much from something so little. Here's to my future library. ??
