Woman's Hour: The Last Furious Fight to Win the Vote
Woman's Hour: The Last Furious Fight to Win the Vote | Elaine Weiss
The nail-biting climax of one of the greatest political battles in American history: the ratification of the constitutional amendment that granted women the right to vote. Nashville, August 1920. Thirty-five states have ratified the Nineteenth Amendment, twelve have rejected or refused to vote, and one last state is needed. It all comes down to Tennessee, the moment of truth for the suffragists, after a seven-decade crusade. The opposing forces include politicians with careers at stake, liquor companies, railroad magnates, and a lot of racists who don't want black women voting. And then there are the "Antis"--women who oppose their own enfranchisement, fearing suffrage will bring about the moral collapse of the nation. They all converge in a boiling hot summer for a vicious face-off replete with dirty tricks, betrayals and bribes, bigotry, Jack Daniel's, and the Bible. Following a handful of remarkable women who led their respective forces into battle, along with appearances by Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, Frederick Douglass, and Eleanor Roosevelt, The Woman's Hour is an inspiring story of activists winning their own freedom in one of the last campaigns forged in the shadow of the Civil War, and the beginning of the great twentieth-century battles for civil rights.

Fantastic book!
The Woman‘s Hour takes a brief look at American woman‘s suffrage, then delves deep into the fight for Tennessee, the 36th state to approve the 19th Ammendment, paving the way for it to be ratified by the federal government.
Weiss also spends time looking at the key players of both for- and anti- parties.

e.queue Agreed! Thought it was such an interesting dive into the subject. I never knew what a fight it was at the end. 4y
K.Wielechowski @e.queue me neither! It was super interesting to hear how dirty the fight got, too. 4y

I'm #audiobaking with my favorite chocolate chip recipe and a book about the suffrage movement in Tennessee. I also remembered that I completely forgot to post a #bfcr3 update last week. 🤦 Truth be told, I've had a bunch of small health issues that have kept me from exercising much, but I think it's important to pay attention to my body's messages. Sleep is going decently well, though! 4/12 books read. #bookfitnesschallenge @wanderinglynn

Perfect way to end #womanshistory month! If you take your right to vote for granted, read this book! If you want to feel empowered, read this book! It took a 72 year movement, to get the 19th amendment ratified. I have never felt so grateful for the brave women who came before me. And the numerous parallels to today's political and social climate was astounding. We still have so much work to do.

Exceptionally researched, brilliantly readable this was eye opening. The political shenanigans, distrust and rampant racism that went alongside the campaign to finally grant women the vote in the US is played out with obvious modern day parallels. A full recommend. I‘ve already handed this over to my dad to read!

The amount of detail in this book is astounding (& occasionally slows things down) but the amount I learned about the women's suffrage movement & the ratification of the 19th amendment made it worth it. I particularly appreciated Weiss's commitment to depicting an honest portrayal of all sides (for & against) & the role racism played--both for Antis & the white Suffs who were more concerned w getting the vote than actual universal suffrage.

This book is amazing — edge-of-your-seat nonfiction about the fight to ratify the 19th amendment in the fateful 36th state needed for women‘s suffrage to become a right across all the US. Riveting. And sad that the racial arguments are still alive today. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A fantastic work of narrative nonfiction that offers a behind-the-scenes look at what it took for Tennessee to ratify suffrage and how this led to women having the right to vote across the U.S. 1/2 ⬇️

WanderingBookaneer Sadly, many of the issues being discussed 100 years ago are still relevant today. Thankfully, women are reclaiming their political power. Let us hope that the unity created by the International Women Marches leads to changes at such a grand scale as that described in this book. 2/2 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 6y

This was absolutely riveting from the first page to the last. When the 19th Amendment was up for ratification, suffregetes and anti-suffregettes converged in Nashville in a no-holds barred battle. The ending had me on the edge of my seat as much as any thriller I have ever watched or read. Weiss doesn't shy away from the shameful concessions and lack of support for racial equity that was involved in the push for the vote. Highly recommend.
