A powerful modern day reimagining of Charlotte Bronts classic novel Jane Eyre. Jane learns that in the world of New Yorks elite, secrets are the greatest extravagance and she must decide if she should trust the man she loves or do whatever it takes to protect his daughter from the consequences of his deception.

The modern re-telling didn‘t add anything to the story. It‘s a graphic novel so there isn‘t a lot of room. Still, the characters were shallow. I was apathetic about Jane and that‘s just not right! ☹️

Jane Eyre is one of my fav books so I had really high hopes for this graphic retelling of Jane Eyre. Sadly the story line fell really flat for me. The author took all the good things about Jane Eyre and threw them out. Instead it felt like some cheap romance novel and listen I love cheap romance novels, But to do that to Jane Eyre just makes me sad. The art work though really makes this book. It‘s so stunning.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

That-Bookish-Hiker The artwork is the only reason I‘m giving this three stars. 5y

Lovely graphics but the story doesn't do anything new with the original. The almost telenova approach to the story bothered me. It read like a very average harlequin.

This graphic novel is supposed to be a modern retelling of Jane Eyre. I found myself intrigued by the story, and with more questions than answers. I thought the ending was lacking. I am sure it comes close to the original story, but to me it seemed too soap opera. It‘s been done a million times in other stories in other ways. Overall, a great read, but it needed more.

This is a modern retelling of Jane Eyre in graphic novel format. JE has long been my favorite novel so I was a little leery, but I needn‘t have been. The art is beautiful and the story, while not an exact match to the original, is true to the spirit. A very enjoyable, quick read.

Ummmm...no. A “modern-day retelling” of Jane Eyre, which I‘m totally on-board with, but it completely misses the entire point of the original. The depth and complexity of the characters in Bronte‘s work are what make it a masterpiece. Whereas, with this.‘, we get a trite romance and a weird ending and nothing of any substance. Some of the art is pretty, though.

I love Jane Eyre, but was disappointed in this modern retelling of the story. A young woman moves to NYC and takes a job as a nanny with the mysterious Mr. Rochester. The plot deviates from the original in too many ways and didn‘t make any sense at the end. I did like the development of Jane‘s relationship with little Adele. The artwork was very good, but the overall effect left me empty.

DivineDiana That‘s too bad. The artwork looks delightful, and I love the premise of the story. 😕 6y

I enjoyed this quick read. I love the illustrations. Jane‘s facial expressions were great. I am not a fan of the original novel, so it was easy for me to prefer this reimagined version. I would guess quite a few fans of Jane Eyre would find this graphic depiction lacking in comparison to the original though.

CoffeeK8 I loved this version, it was so refreshing and gave Jane more agency. 6y

This is a short, fun imagining of Jane Eyre in modern day New York. The art is really stylized and beautiful. I particularly liked the way Adele was portrayed. She reminded me a little of Eloise.

It's nice for fans of Jane Eyre, but probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone who hasn't read Jane Eyre since it cuts out so many storylines.

#booksandbreakfast while finishing the modern graphic adaptation of my favorite #janeeyre - which was a great disappointment. Using only the most general plot outline McKenna completely misses the point of why i (and so many others) love the original: it‘s character depth. Having our protagonist‘s struggle with pride, morals and integrity reduced to a 50 shades poor-girl-meets-rich-mystery-guy level is just sad. ...👇

Heideschrampf 👉... There would have been so many little ways how it could have been elevated towards a more literary level. I was hoping for a more complex, feminist and ambiguous work from the 📽Crazy Ex-Girlfriend writer, a show i adore. Keep off! (edited) 7y
Sarah83 So bad? 😪 7y
Heideschrampf @Sarah83 yeah, kinda... it‘s nicely drawn and if you want just an unrealistic swoony love story, it‘s an okay read, but it‘s just not jane eyre... 7y
See All 13 Comments
Sarah83 Like you said, the main elements are left out, it is not the same story 7y
Heideschrampf For those of you who wanna know: here are multiple deviations in the ❗️SPOILERS❗️below👇 7y
Heideschrampf Rochester‘s wife is in a coma (because she caught a bullet meant for him) and he only hides her to keep her safe from the killers 7y
Heideschrampf Cheesy: After a night at the ballet they are alone on his massive yacht, her sailing in a ball gown and heels, and they have swooning sex while the boat drifts unattended in new york harbour (edited) 7y
Heideschrampf Bertha‘s brother Mason is the villain who shot at R, wounding Isabella (Bertha). His motive: he wanted to kill Rochester to finally be able to confess incestual love to his sister... yeah, right... 7y
Heideschrampf Mason sets the villa on fire („if i can‘t have her...), R fights him and falls (we‘re not sure if he‘s blinded), and Jane carries out comatose Bertha through the flaming wreckage because she wants to save her for him. She fails. Happy Ending when Jane wakes up in hospital... (edited) 7y
Heideschrampf NO angry explosion at the aunt‘s house, NO orphanage + loss of best friend, NO nightly treck across the fields, NO cousins + St John, NO supernatural elements (edited) 7y
julesG Okay. I won't bother. You should ask for a refund. 7y

I‘m not a fan of the original Jane Eyre—she‘s such a martyr!—but this retelling set in NYC is quick and fun. McKenna‘s Jane has more backbone than the original, although her falling for Rochester is just as inexplicable to me as in Brontë‘s version. The supporting cast of characters adds a hint of diversity: a queer brown roommate who does drag, and a black friend at art school. Ramón Perez‘s striking page layouts add to the appeal.

Gezemice I loved Jane Eyre... I thought Mr. Rochester was flirty and they had chemistry. I don‘t read romance, mostly because it is usually unrealistic, but I could definitely see why Jane was going for Rochester. 7y

It was easy to spot writer Aline Brosh McKenna‘s name slipped in to the NYC cityscape in this graphic novel. Then, near the end of the book, I noticed Canadian artist Ramón K Perez had hidden his initials on a baseball cap. I feel like a champion noticer. (Autocorrect doesn‘t believe noticer is a word. Maybe I just invented it.)

This was terrible. Now I will open myself to all criticism and admit that I have not read Jane Eyre. *ducks from flying tomatoes* With that said, I know the story and thought this would be a fun, modern retelling. Nope. No character growth from anyone. Odd story with the brother. Rochester was just creepy and mean, and I saw no reason for Jane‘s attraction. And the ending: 🙄

KVanRead Yup. This was pretty ridiculous. Much better off reading the original. 7y

This. Is. BAD. Gosh where do I even start? If you‘re a Jane Eyre fan you will HATE this. It‘s a very loose interpretation (if it‘s even that at all) and it seriously reads like fan fiction. If you don‘t want to be heartbroken and read about a drunk, jealous Mr. Rochester (who reminded me of Mr. Grey), or a quick-to-fall in love “Cinderella” Jane Eyre—do NOT read this. What we all love and cherish about Jane Eyre is totally lost here. Ugh.

My only quibble with this modern retelling of Jane Eyre is that her childhood is really glossed over. Update: I‘ve thought about this some more and I realize the only reason I like it is that I liked Jane‘s relationship with Rochester‘s daughter, Adele. The rest of it wasn‘t so believable, so I‘ve adjusted my rating.

Loved this layout but I did not enjoy this book. It‘s contemporary twist was too shallow and simple for my tastes, with a relationship that developed even more implausibly than its namesake. The Game of Thrones twist was also just too thoughtless and the pace too quick to make anything ring ‘true‘. #letsgetgraphicweeklongmarathon
