Disappearances
Disappearances | Emily Bain Murphy
What if the ordinary things in life suddenly...disappeared? Aila Quinn's mother, Juliet, has always been a mystery: vibrant yet guarded, she keeps her secrets beyond Aila's reach. When Juliet dies, Aila and her younger brother Miles are sent to live in Sterling, a rural town far from home--and the place where Juliet grew up. Sterling is a place with mysteries of its own. A place where the experiences that weave life together--scents of flowers and food, reflections from mirrors and lakes, even the ability to dream--vanish every seven years. No one knows what caused these "Disappearances," or what will slip away next. But Sterling always suspected that Juliet Quinn was somehow responsible--and Aila must bear the brunt of their blame while she follows the chain of literary clues her mother left behind. As the next Disappearance nears, Aila begins to unravel the dual mystery of why the Disappearances happen and who her mother truly was. One thing is clear: Sterling isn't going to hold on to anyone's secrets for long before it starts giving them up.

Good writing. Good characters. I like the concept of the disappearances themselves. I did not jive with the Shakespeare connection. Kind of just lost something for me. 4 stars because it did draw me in and I felt I was in this town, but the Will Shakes part is just not doing it for me.

This book is one of my all time favorite reads. I am obsessed with the magical twists in a modern day world and blown away by the level of thought from the subplots to Shakespeare. Would definitely recommend.

I absolutely adored this book. The characters were lovable, the idea of abstract things like reflections and dreams disappearing every 7 years is captivating, and the pacing is nice. The author gave me just enough time to settle into a new idea to where I felt comfortable and then threw in something new and exciting! So glad I found this on my elibrary.

This book had such a cool premise! A town where something disappears every seven years? Yes, please! I thought it was well written and had a very cool premise. My only problem with it is that Shakespeare plays a fairly major role in it (Look, her mom‘s name was Juliet so you knew she‘d be a fan) and I just... can‘t seem to like Shakespeare. BUT if you like mystery, and magic curses, and ESPECIALLY if you like Shakespeare, then absolutely read this

I LOOOOVE this book gosh, this is probably one of the best I have ever read! (and yet this book is so underrated)

It's a YA, fantasy and mystery - who will dislike this genre??? With a dash of magical acts, some mystery, family realistic love, a cute love story (but not overshadows the plot) - P E R F E C T!

The story is set into motion when Aila's mother dies and her father gets drafted into WWII. Aila and her little brother are sent to her mother's home town to live with her mother's childhood BF. Aila can tell something is off about this town. Every 7 years something disappears. It starts with reflections. A local doctor finds 'cures' for most and Aila links these cures to Shakespeare references. Def a good choice if you like crossovers.

I can‘t believe this book never got more attention! The reviews are great, but it‘s audience was so small. It‘s an enchanting blend of mystery, historical fiction, and magical realism, set in an uncanny “something‘s not quite right here” town during WW2, laced through with Shakespeare references and slow burn revelations. The atmosphere reminds me of The Raven Cycle, with a focus on family and small town secrets instead of friend group dynamics.

Zelma That sounds really interesting! 7y
Laalaleighh @Zelma I was really drawn in by it! I honestly wish it had been a series! 7y

Laalaleighh @Bookzombie thank you!! Hope you enjoy it!! 7y
Laalaleighh @sprainedbrain considering half my tbr is seemingly books you‘ve recommended at this point... seems fair 😹😘 7y
Laalaleighh @Avanders Haha! Aww I‘m glad my enthusiasm translates over into my reviews! Honestly though, if I had more characters to work with I would have added: It‘s a slower, more atmospheric book. If I had to match it to weather, it would be a really heavy fog- the kind that makes everything disappear except what‘s right in front of you. It‘s the sort of book you want after reading a bunch of fast paced, or suspenseful books and want a change of pace. 7y
Avanders 😳 You've made it even more appealing!! Maybe the library has it..... 😁😘😘 ETA: yep. Done & done. Hold placed. ☺️ (edited) 7y
Laalaleighh @Avanders haha, attempting to put my enthusiasm into perspective apparently doesn‘t work too well! I hope that enjoy it whenever you read it! 😘😘😘 7y
Laalaleighh @Avanders haha I just saw your ETA. Let me know what you think!! 7y
Avanders @Laalaleighh I suppose if a really heavy fog weren't appealing to me.... 😁 Oh I'm sure I will. 😘💖 (edited) 7y
Laalaleighh @Avanders I‘m nervous! I hope it lives up to my description. It does have mostly 4&5 star reviews everywhere, so hopefully! I love fog! It‘s one of my favorite weathers! I blame the musical brigadoon and this book I read as a kid where fog opens a portal to a different world- I can‘t remember its name! 7y
Avanders Lol I know the feeling!! I'm sure I'll love it 😁 Just like fog... 🖤💙🖤 I've been trying to think of a book suggestion for a while that fits your description.. I can picture it but I cannot remember the name!! I'll see if I can find it later 😁 7y

A "magical-realism" historical fiction mystery. Really? Give a teenager a dead mother, a father gone to war, a difficult little brother and a new town with a more-than mysterious disappearance every seven years and see what she does with it!

Wow, this was an immensely boring and weird book that I did not like. It's a "mystery" without any suspense and a super slow pace.

Why was it set in the 1940s?! There was no purpose to that! Ugh! I love WWII and Shakespeare but this book...no! Its so underwhelming!

I just didn't care about any of the characters or the big problem...

And the hidden family member who is wheelchair bound and angry about it...really? Are we really using that?

JazzFeathers Goodness, this really sounds awful 😕 7y
Tamra Too bad, I would have expected more too! 7y

Me choosing a #TBR is kind of laughable. Odds I'll stick to it are slim and none of these help me with #LitsyAtoZ but I was feeling pretty inspired by the hope of actual fall weather in October and all the Halloween posts today on Litsy. I'm almost done reading this book and I'm so loving it. The pacing is perfect - the plot unravels realistically. The magical element is intriguing; it's a force that is shaping the characters and their world, almost pushing it's way in gradually to be more of a presence with the absences (or disappearances) that it creates. I also like the lead, Aila, and the Shakespearean references and all the mystery that surrounds Sterling.

This one has gotten really good reviews, but it fell a little flat for me. I suppose it would be classified as magical realism, which I enjoy if done well, but I found it not hashed out as well as it could've been & therefore more on the unbelievable side. Some good elements here, but could've been better I think.
The cover's great though, huh?

Another audiobook listen in the car with my kids. Unlike the last one, this one got 👍🏻all around. Refreshing for YA. Strong female protagonist without any kind of special powers or beauty and who makes mistakes, but still succeeds. Unique mystery that weaves in Shakespeare and clues from his life and plays. This kept our interest and had a satisfying ending.

I knew I was going to enjoy this book! I didn't rlly know much goin into it other than its a YA mystery novel about a girl in a town where things disappear. I didn't know it was going to be a whirlwind of a journey with Shakespeare, friendship and family issues!

I've come to the conclusion that Litsy will be used for my theories and rants. Coz I have many of both!
.
.
PREDICTION: The Shakespeare book was meant to be sent to Stefen before/after Juliet died. But it didn't get sent and therefore Aila got the Stone(ring) and book. Stefen probably comes back to the town because he got news that Aila arrived and stole her necklace. And now both stories will meet up soon coz the months are closer now!!

Okay, so I think it's that mysterious other guy who is Phineas son who took the necklace. Like it makes sense. Phineas wanted it and the guy said he was gonna get it back and then it disappears chapters earlier! For now, it's the only plausible explanation! I have no idea how Juliet is involved tho, but am keen to find out! More spoiler-y discussions to come!
