NATIONAL BESTSELLER 2013 ALA/YALSA Alex Award 2014 Revelation Award at Angoulme 2015 ALA/YALSA Alex Award (Excellence in Narrative Nonfiction) You only think you know this story. In 1991, Jeffrey Dahmerthe most notorious serial killer since Jack the Ripperseared himself into the American consciousness. To the public, Dahmer was a monster who committed unthinkable atrocities. To Derf Backderf, "Jeff" was a much more complex figure: a high school friend with whom he had shared classrooms, hallways, and car rides. In My Friend Dahmer, a haunting and original graphic novel, writer-artist Backderf creates a surprisingly sympathetic portrait of a disturbed young man struggling against the morbid urges emanating from the deep recesses of his psychea shy kid, a teenage alcoholic, and a goofball who never quite fit in with his classmates. With profound insight, what emerges is a Jeffrey Dahmer that few ever really knew, and one readers will never forget. Also available by Derf Backderf, Trashed. Praise for My Friend Dahmer: "The tone is sympathetic and enraged (Where were the damn adults?), while not excusing or making the story unduly fascinating. Backderfs writing is impeccably honest in not exculpating his own misdeeds . . . and quietly horrifying. A small, dark classic." Publishers Weekly (starred review)? "One of the best graphic novels I've read this year." -- USA Today's PopCandy "One of the most thought-provoking comics released in a long time." -- Slate.com? "Carefully researched and sourced with ample back matter, Backderfs tragic chronicle of what shouldnt have been is a real butt-kicker for educators and youth counselors as well as peers of other potential Dahmers. Highly recommended for professionals as well as true crime readers." Library Journal "This isnt a cautionary tale. Its insight sharedinsight arriving too late to save Dahmers victims, let alone Jeff himself, but perhaps soon enough to remind both teens and their caretakers that questioning peculiar behavior might be a better tack than ignoring or exploiting it." -- School Library Journal? "Fortunately, cartoonist Derf Backderf isn't one to avoid the troubling, even terrifying, truths that lurk in the dark recesses of that notorious serial killer's early lifeand modern American life itself." -- Foreword Reviews "A powerful, unsettling use of the graphic medium to share a profoundly disturbing story. . . . An exemplary demonstration of the transformative possibilities of graphic narrative." Kirkus Reviews (starred review) "Masterful. . . a rich tale full of complexity and sensitivity . . . There's something about Dahmer's life and crimes that seems almost crafted for treatment in the murky world of comix. Yet it's empathy and nuance, not gore, that put My Friend Dahmer alongside Alison Bechdel's Fun Home and David Small's Stitches in the annals of illustrated literature." Cleveland Plain Dealer "A new classic of the graphic novel genre. . . . A moving book that qualifies as one of the great graphic novels, a work of art." Creative Loafing "A well-told, powerful story. Backderf is quite skilled in using comics to tell this tale of a truly weird and sinister 1970s adolescent world."?R. Crumb? "Anyone who opens My Friend Dahmer to satisfy a morbid curiosity, and likewise anyone who expects to find no more than a cynical publishing venture here, is bound for disappointment. It is a horrifying read, yes, not so much for what it reveals about the sad early (and inevitably terrible) life of Jeffrey Dahmer, but because of what it reveals about the bland emotional landscape of Middle America, in this vision a petri dish for psychoses in many degrees and forms.?Backderfs odd stylization, with figures that look like organic robots, is a perfect vehicle for this conception. His graphic approach is grotesque, droll, and it rags on reality as masses of kids knew and still know it.?Lots of books exist about the agonies and cruelty of the adolescent high school experience, but few so compellingly bring us straight into that soulless environment, showing the ways it can shelter, allow to burgeon, and, at the same time, be completely blind to real madness.?It wasnt easy reading this book, but Im glad I did."?David Small, author and illustrator of Stitches, a National Book Award finalist and #1 New York Times bestseller "Stunning. Horrifying. Beautifully done."?Alison Bechdel, author and illustrator of Fun Home, a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist "My Friend Dahmer is a brilliant graphic novel and surely ranks among the very best of the form. Like Alison BechdelsFun Home, the book plumbs a dark autobiographical mystery, trying in retrospect to understand actions and motivations to piece together the makings of a tragedy. Like Charles Burnss Black Hole, its a starkly etched portrait of the horror of high school in the 1970s. Comparisons aside, My Friend Dahmer is entirely original, boldly and beautifully drawn, and full of nuance and complexity and even a strange tenderness. Out of the sordid and grotesque details of Dahmers life, Derf has fashioned a moving and complex literary work of art."?Dan Chaon, award-winning author of Among the Missing and You Remind Me of Me "Just when you think you know all there is to know about Jeffrey Dahmer one of the most notorious criminals of the past centuryalong comes My Friend Dahmer, which adds significantly to our understanding of this rare form of psychopathology. The graphic novel format helps the reader appreciate the adolescent mind-set of Dahmers high school classmates. Although none of those who grew up with Dahmer expected to hear what they learned on July 22, 1991, when he was caught, no one was really surprised, either.?This unique book allows the reader to listen in on the fascinating reminiscences of those who watched the developing mind of a future serial killer."?Louis B. Schlesinger, PhD, Professor of Forensic Psychology, John Jay College of Criminal Justice "Itd be so easy to pigeonhole and think that the reason you cant stop reading My Friend Dahmer is because it offers a voyeuristic peek inside the monster. And it does. But as it turns its self-aware eye on the boy who doesnt belong, the real magic trick is how equally hateful and sad you feel for the monster himself. This ones still haunting me."?Brad Meltzer, author of Identity Crisis and The Inner Circle, a #1 New York Times bestseller?? "As someone who walked the halls of Revere High School with both Backderf and Dahmer and was there from the beginning, I am astounded by the accuracy and truthfulness of this portrait. I know of no other work that so clearly shows the teenage days of an American monster, long before the rest of the world heard of him. Mesmerizing."?Mike Kukral, PhD, Revere High School class of 1978, Professor of Geography, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, author of Prague 1989: Theater of Revolution "If you want to read a heavy story about a disturbing teenager, My Friend Dahmer will certainly quench your dark little desires. But this book is about a lot of other things that matter much, much more: the institutionalized weirdness of the suburban seventies, what it means to be friends with someone you dont really like, a cogent explanation as to why terrible things happen, and a means for feeling sympathy toward those who dont seem to deserve it."?Chuck Klosterman, author of Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto?and The Visible Man "A solid job. Putrid serial killer Jeffrey Dahmers origins are explored in this fine book. Dig ititll hang you out to dry."?James Ellroy, author of My Dark Places and L.A. Confidential

I‘ve been really looking forward to rereading this strange sort of true crime graphic novel memoir. I think it‘s a really interesting project to discuss a serial killer almost entirely before his crimes happened, and think about signs that went missed and what went wrong before any crimes took place. I like how this book had a lot of compassion in many directions but was ultimately, clearly, anti serial killing.

MatchlessMarie This one was my first read of 2024 I thought it was a very interesting perspective / take on this genre. 2mo

Meh. After watching the Netflix series and a bunch of interviews, this graphic novel didn‘t tell me anything new. I appreciate how he portrayed Dahmer as an unfortunate figure, who could have turned out different in better circumstances, but still placed full blame on Dahmer himself for his actions.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Backderf was Dahmer‘s high school classmate in small town Ohio. This title, incredible as it is, makes them sound like closer friends than actually portrayed, but I think that also speaks to the general oddness of Dahmer‘s character. Integral background information about his behavior, home life, and substance abuse are addressed in detail. While I didn‘t love the artwork, it was effective. A solid graphic memoir.

vivastory Great review! If you haven't read Backderf's other works I def recommend checking them out. I found his latest on Kent State esp informative & memorable 2y

I‘ve lost a lot of reading time this past week to this Netflix series! Very disturbing and wow, Evan Peters (as Dahmer) is impressive.

I read the tagged graphic memoir several years ago and would definitely recommend to readers of true crime. Backderf was Dahmer‘s classmate in 1970s Ohio. He‘s looking back at what he and others knew of this boy who became the man who took so many lives and destroyed many others.

A really truly difficult read, but an important lens to look at a really terrible person through. The writer was at high school with Dahmer and records his and his friends‘ memories of him, including some very very creepy material, but more importantly the huge number of times adults at school could have noticed and intervened in his life. This is the story of a truly frightening person and also a school full of adults that failed to step in.

Emilymdxn I liked how the writer focused on what he knew and, tastefully, didn‘t try to depict anything that happened with his victims later. I know from some other stuff I‘ve read that the families of victims don‘t like to have that stuff depicted 2y

Finished this one up this afternoon for #lmpbc. Nice pick wasn't 100% what to expect going into this and am glad the author didn'tgo too much into the murders b/c idk how that would have worked with a graphic novel but his reflections were interesting although not super in depth, which I understand, given his age at the time of the " friendship". So plan was to finish up my #LMPBC and get it in the mail yesterday. But then the bottom of my car fell off. 🤬
The worst part is that it forced me to do the thing I hate doing the most: asking for help. Twice.
My cars fixed(ish). Apparently it doesn‘t NEED a bottom. (It‘s just preferable).
Anyway, My Friend Dahmer will be in the mail tomorrow, @HeathHof
Tonight: 🍷

Maggie4483 @booksellerofyourdiscontent thank you! Fortunately I work with people who know about car stuff, so I was able to get some help there. But it happened after everyone else was gone for the day, and I don‘t have a lot of friends or family close by that I felt comfortable calling for help right then. 2y

Well written and well drawn.

A sad and scary insight into the teenage years of Jeffrey Dahmer.

Troubled from the start, with a family that never paid him any attention, no friends and completely isolated, life was very lonely for Dahmer.

Haunted by his thoughts and fantasies, this is the start of him becoming a monster who would go on to kill.

A really interesting though sad (for all involved) read.

Not a fan. So he had a bad home life and every adult around him failed him. So he was an outcast and an oddball and only had friends bc he was ableist and made fun of people. I‘m glad Backderf has sympathy for Dahmer, bc you‘ll be hard pressed to find any from me. This book was way too apologetic, and not towards the people whose lives were ruined bc of one man. No thanks, I‘d prefer not to sympathize with someone who brutally murdered others.

MsRadioSilence I‘m not sure what I was expecting, but I‘m just really not here for sympathizing with a serial killer who knew he had problems and, if the Notes are to be believed, did have at least one person trying to help. Anyways. I need a palate cleanser. 3y
MsRadioSilence ALSO ALSO the author tried to make a joke bc he once talked to Dahmer dressed as H**ler and never once mentioned that that‘s antisemitic as f*ck and he was wrong for it? And all the ableism jokes he also didn‘t think to apologize for in 2012 when this was published? Dude. What the f*ck did I just waste my time on?? 3y

Hello lovely litsy community!

My 10 yr wedding anniversary with my husband is coming up and I have no clue what to get him. He recently read this and loved it. So I was wondering if any one could suggest other graphic novels similar to this. He has read Chew and started Saga.

Thank you for your help!

#pleasehelp #recommendations

vivastory If he hasn't read Backderf's other graphic novels, I def recommend. Esp. Trashed which I found both very humorous & informative. I'd also recommend Craig Thompson's “Habibi“ (the artwork alone is stunning), Charles Burns' “Black Hole“ (kind of like a gn version of the movie “It Follows“. Read this years ago & it still creeps me out) Jeff Lemire's “Underwater Welder“ or his book “Roughneck“. Hope that helps! 4y
charl08 In addition to @vivastory recommendations - Might he like "My Favourite Thing is Monsters?" There's a great monthly GN review column in The Guardian too - although it's dangerous reading! https://www.theguardian.com/books/series/graphic-novel-of-the-month 4y

Meh.

I've always been interested in Dahmer and this is definitely an interesting and behind-the-scenes look at the man behind the murders but I just think true crime stories aren't exactly graphic novel material. The third party, high school view just didn't do much for me. Though I did find the sources at the end to be an interesting read.

Even after reading some of #Triptych and watching Nightmare on Elm Street, this wasn‘t the best thing to read before bed, regardless of it being a graphic novel.
BECAUSE IT HAPPENED.
IT WAS REAL.
Drawn and written by author-artist and former classmate ‘Derf,‘ he constructs a clear picture of how a mentally disturbed Dahmer grew up in an environment that shaped him into a serial killer. So many signs. So little done.

I hate liked this book. I loved this small glimpse into who Dahmer was as a teen - however, I feel also like the man the wrote it is capitalizing on a loosely based “friendship” with a teen Dahmer he only hung out with because he (Dahmer) was the source of a good laugh. I could just be overly critical of the material but it made the book seem hollow. #dahmer #onesitreads

Wow, honestly a real eye opener. It's one of those types of stories where even some kind of adult intervention could have drastically changed his life and saved so many lives. I guess without people like him though we wouldn't be able to figure out key signs to prevent future serial killers or catch them sooner. Either way, it shines a light from a different side from someone who actually met him and knew him, well, to what he let them know.

A complete departure from what I usually read. I‘m not a fan of graphic novels or serial killers! However my brother was talking about the movie made based on this book and of course my graphic loving partner had a copy . She got it at an op shop for $2 and had never read it. A look at his early life by someone who went to school with him. Before the killings. Interesting but alarming. @MrsMalaprop

Rissreads Now that does sound interesting! 6y

#2018Book98
While the art style of this graphic novel wasn't my favorite, the book itself was great. Backderf shows the world in which Dahmer grew up, offering insight into what might have led him down the path he ultimately took. My favorite thing about this, though, was Backderf's insistence that no one forced Dahmer to become a killer; he made that decision on his own.

I assume my level of excitement about reading this would be considered inappropriate by polite society.

Leftcoastzen I saw the movie! I felt my interest was maybe a bit inappropriate. If that makes sense.Movie was good but.. 6y

I loved it! The writing. The horrible “adults” who just didn‘t bother (okay they aren‘t horrible but...) the drawing. Oh and the movie adaptation was so worth the watch

Had to reread this one because @KUBuckeye and I were discussing it the other day. Quick read and I really enjoy the style of comic the author drew. Highly depressing, but still a great insight into the early years of #JeffreyDahmer

KUBuckeye And that conversation was totally normal. 6y
