Every week we pile our garbage on the curb and it disappears--like magic! The reality is anything but, of course. Trashed, Derf Backderf's follow-up to the critically acclaimed, award-winning international bestseller My Friend Dahmer, is an ode to the crap job of all crap jobs--garbage collector. Anyone who has ever been trapped in a soul-sucking gig will relate to this tale. Trashed follows the raucous escapades of three 20-something friends as they clean the streets of pile after pile of stinking garbage, while battling annoying small-town bureaucrats, bizarre townfolk, sweltering summer heat, and frigid winter storms. Trashed is fiction, but is inspired by Derf's own experiences as a garbageman. Interspersed are nonfiction pages that detail what our garbage is and where it goes. The answers will stun you. Hop on the garbage truck named Betty and ride along with Derf on a journey into the vast, secret world of garbage. Trashed is a hilarious, stomach-churning tale that will leave you laughing and wincing in disbelief.

5⭐️

I had such a blast reading this! The numbers are a little dated on it because it's from 2015 but like the book said, since the system hasn't really changed since the mid-1900s, the information is still really good. This book is part autobiography about the author's time as a garbage man and part educating the public on the importance of waste services. I really appreciated the art style and the sense of humor throughout this entire thing.

My last read before the end of #24B4Monday. It's about the author's time working as a trash collector, but also a history lesson about garbage and some seriously terrifying statistics about the amount of trash created by Americans. The humor is coal black, and a bit depressing, but overall a solid read. 4 💥💥💥💥 out of 5.

Finished with 24 hrs, 55 minutes, 17 seconds.

This graphic novel recommendation made me giggle when I saw it today!!!! Anybody read this one? “An ode to the crap job of all crap jobs.”😂😂

LiteraryinPA His name isn‘t really Derf Backderf, is it?? 7y
GarthRanzz Is it just me or does the character on the cover look like Harrison Ford? 7y
BryanaB I haven‘t read this one, but he went to high school with Jeffrey Dahmer and wrote another one about him, and that one was pretty good!! 7y

I really liked the art and the garbage facts were absolutely fascinating but the story got pretty repetitive and I found it a little dull. I‘m intrigued to try his other better known title, My Friend Dahmer.

UrsulaMonarch Great review- that was pretty much my experience too! 7y
KVanRead @Lkelly Thx! Have you read his other one? 7y
UrsulaMonarch @KVanRead not yet, but I plan to! I think I saw it available for free online somewhere but the format was too difficult to read. I read Trashed on #hoopla but Dahmer is not on there 😕 7y

Extremely informative and somewhat terrifying book that I ended up not "liking" a ton although I think it's quite good. The topic and artistic style were both effectively gross to me, which I appreciated, but this also made me dread returning to it a bit.

Nice quick history of recent trash collection #graphicnovels

SkeletonKey Just watched a great documentary called Waste Land about a Brazilian artist who started creating portraits from things found in Brazil's biggest landfill. 7y
UrsulaMonarch @SkeletonKey oh I've heard of that but have not seen it! Fascinating- and very depressing! - topic!! Will have to look for it, thanks! 7y

I picked up this at the comic book shop at the mall. I am enjoying it so far, I'm about 60% done. I went ahead and bought another of his graphic novels, "My Friend Dahmer" because this one is so enjoyable. #graphicnovels #comics #sliceoflife #humor

brilliantglow My husband does this to me ALL. THE. TIME. it's infuriating 8y
BookBoggart @brilliantglow My bf does the same thing! Especially around the last chapter or epilogue. It's as if men sense then end in nye and HAVE to interpret. Same goes for the end of movies too. Lol 8y
brilliantglow YES! omg that sounds exactly like my husband. You would think he'd clue in when I give him the glare and respond with uhhuh, okay or similar non conversation carrying responses lol 8y

An Ode to the Crap Job of all Crap Jobs! Great graphic novel that makes you think anew about the trash you generate - and what you put out at the curb!

I like the concept, but the execution was really boring. It's part story, part informational book, and neither is really effective. I did learn a lot, but I was ultimately bored.
