I love Tamara Pierce and this book was no exception. The only annoying thing is how long between this book and the next book there was.

Cheers Amazon, I really needed the reminder that I‘ve been waiting since 2018 to get the rest of my OG book boyfriends origin story 😩🥺

I love Tamora Pierce but this book is not for me. It was 400+ pages of a slice-of-life. So many times a plot could have picked up but we just kept seeing their school life. It's not until the last 50 pages that a plot finally starts to develop.
If i read the sequel itll be from the library

It took me a while, but I finished my #bookspin for this month! Tamora Pierce is one of my favorite authors, and this one only solidified that ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Although I love Pierce I am pretty sure that had I read this at any other time it wouldn‘t have worked for me in the same way. However I enjoyed being able to decompress at the end of the day by reading episodes about about a shy and powerful young mage and his friends learning about magic at school. There is no real drama although things to come in future books are hinted at. What I normally would have found boring was very comforting this week.

One of my 2020 favorites. Tempests and Slaughter is the first book in the Numair Chronicles, and revolves around young Numair, then Arram Draper, and his years at the Carthak University. It's nice to see a beloved character again, and as a longtime fan of the Tortall stories, it was wonderful to see the world expand.

This book follows Arram as he trains to be a mage - it‘s more a collection of anecdotes about his time at school rather than an overarching story - but that meant it worked really well for me as an audiobook for my commute. The three main characters were very good. I liked the reader - she changed her voice as the main character grew older which was a nice touch!

It‘s Tamora Pierce so the book is good. That being said, I was hoping for more. Though generally well-written, the writing is, at times also clunky. The story is engaging & complex but there isn‘t a whole lot of forward momentum. The real strength of the book is the characters—the three main characters in particular though there are also some great secondary characters. I don‘t know if I will continue with the series but I‘m glad I read this one.

I‘m continuing with my deep dive into the oldest, and dustiest, sections of my TBR stacks. I‘m afraid if I let some of these books linger tooooooooooo long, books that I was presumably interested in when I bought them, I will lose all interest and not give them the attention they deserve. Tamora Pierce is always good though and I‘m really not sure why I haven‘t picked this book up before now. Here goes!

Love the tortall series and Tamora Pierce's writing. Such fun seeing familiar characters and how they came to be the great and powerful people they are in previous books that came later chronologically. Sweet trio of kids. Magic school. Rich fantasy world. It has all you need.

My 1st experience of Pierce & I found it more middle grade than the YA I was expecting. Similarities with HP thematically but also the writing has the similar quality of easy readability as Rowling's. It's not particularly sophisticated but has a rhythm that is seductive and absorbing. While I see how this is a set-up for the trilogy and appreciate that this is quality fantasy .... cont. in comments ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Think it's a prequel to an existing series...which I haven't read. So I'm either gonna be clueless & confused or intriguing & hooked into another series - as if my TBR schedule isn't crammed enough!

The photo‘s of Wild Magic, but I promise this is about Tempests and Slaughter: there are certainly some discrepancies between the Numair of the new series and The Immortals (the first book Numair appeared in). Mostly in what spells Numair is good at and able to handle and what Arram (his younger self) is good at. Minor problems, but discrepancies I‘m finding nonetheless. 😢

It‘s the story of Arram Draper before he was Numair Salmalin (a beloved character from Pierce‘s previous Tortall books). This first book is set in his early teens and has all I‘ve come to love about Pierce books. Whether you‘ve read her before or are just now discovering Tortall, I could not rec this book more!

This is such a fun drop back into Pierce‘s Tortall ♥️♥️ if u love Pierce‘s books where growing up can be gross, hard, and magical, then this one is for you. I think (tho im reading it from a non-newbies eyes) this isnt a bad book to jump into Pierce‘s Tortall universe. ☺️

This book includes a giant self-determined emotional support tortoise who tries to climb into your lap when you are sad and checks on you when you have bad dreams. And that grumbles when the snuggles stop. I love Sunstone...

I am enjoying Numair and his lessons in Carthak, his Not!Pet Preet & and I share his discomfort with the gladiatorial games... I hope Musenda is ok...

Well, this is bringing back memories...

This books was MUCH better than I thought it would be. A perfect blending of mage school and world building. A really well written description of a young, shy mage and his friends. The female characters, as always with Pierce, are full fledged, and we gain insight into how the future emperor got to be as crazy as he was. I can‘t wait to read the next book in the series and I appreciate the messages about human and animal rights. 4/5 stars

I‘ve always loved Numair, and I‘ve loved getting to know him as young Arram Draper. This book is full of fun Easter eggs and insights. I can‘t wait to see what happens in “The Exile‘s Gift”! 🙌🏼📚🤓💕

As the beginning of a series this was a good start. It's a long book and felt it at times but I did enjoy the story. It's not heavy in drama but lots going on. This tells the story of his early years at mage school. The plot was interesting and detailed. The ending was good as it left you wanting more but no major cliffhanger. The introduction of Preet was clever and I really loved her.

If you love Tamora Pierce, you will love this book. I did. One could pick on it a bit but honestly, it‘s a great read, and I will never stop loving Tamora Pierce.

Arram, and his friends, Varice and Prince Ozorne, move through terms of the Imperial University of Carthak, attending classes, making friends and enemies, learning from powerful mages. Arram's day-to-day life makes up the most of the book and Tamora Pierce has created a World ready for adventure and it feels as if some real drama is around the next corner. thanks to the Author/the Publishers/NetGalley for this book in exchange for an honest review

I've been a fan of Tamora Pierce since I was in middle school and constantly look for books that remind me of her books.

I was so excited to read this book. The plot mostly felt like setup for later books and is full of foreshadowing for the immortals series where Arram/Numair first shows up. I really enjoyed the detail it adds to the world and look forward to the rest of the series.

Now I have to go reread Wild Magic!

Ok guys this was my first Tamora Pierce and I did not like it. I felt like there was no goal, it was boring and nothing really happened. I thought for sure I would enjoy this author, should I have started with a different book?

This didn't work for me for various reasons. There is little plot and world building happening, and the writing was dry and boring.

Got up at 5:00 am to go to a triathlon. Now I get to read while I watch.

Huge fan of Tamora Pierce! I loved seeing Arram as a young boy. His friendship with Varice and Ozorne was brilliantly done. Looking forward to the next book in this series! :)

Stellar as always. I got sucked in so quickly I left my shoes behind lol. Now to wait anxiously for the next one.

Numair is my all time favorite character from the Tortall universe so I was bound to enjoy this book about his origin story. This book is definitely a slow-burn fantasy; not much happens plot wise but I can tell that this book is really meant to set up events for book 2. I've always loved how Pierce describes magic and I'm eagerly awaiting book 2.

Also, Pierce should be giving SJM cover quotes not the other way around. #salty 😑

I'm so excited to read this book. Tamora Pierce has been one of my favorite authors since 2001 or 2002 when I first read Wild Magic. I was immediately hooked on her storytelling and bought every book she'd published from then on. Daine and Kel's stories in particular were my go-to books when I wanted something familiar and comforting. It's been a few years since I read any of her works so I'm excited to dive back in!
