Beast Is an Animal
Beast Is an Animal | Peternelle van Arsdale
A girl with a secret talent must save her village from the encroaching darkness in this haunting and deeply satisfying tale. Alys was seven when the soul eaters came to her village. These soul eaters, twin sisters who were abandoned by their father and slowly morphed into something not quite human, devour human souls. Alys, and all the other children, were spared--and they were sent to live in a neighboring village. There the devout people created a strict world where good and evil are as fundamental as the nursery rhymes children sing. Fear of the soul eaters--and of the Beast they believe guides them--rule village life. But the Beast is not what they think it is. And neither is Alys. Inside, Alys feels connected to the soul eaters, and maybe even to the Beast itself. As she grows from a child to a teenager, she longs for the freedom of the forest. And she has a gift she can tell no one, for fear they will call her a witch. When disaster strikes, Alys finds herself on a journey to heal herself and her world. A journey that will take her through the darkest parts of the forest, where danger threatens her from the outside--and from within her own heart and soul.

The Beast Is an Animal is an eerie, compelling, wholly original tale of far-flung villages, dark woods, and creatures that hunt in the night. It's also a deeply human story about a girl finding her way in a world that is ugly and beautiful, good and bad—and discovering the same within herself.

Way back in the beginning, there were two sisters. They were born minutes apart, each with a velvet coat of black hair on the top of her perfect head. The mother had labored for two full days, and it was a miracle she survived.

Got my 5th and final book completed just at the end of the 24-hour readathon. Stayed up for the full 24 hours! Nice to end with a little YA horror. It was less traumatizing than I think ending with the Stand would have been. While this was a quick and enjoyable read it was definitely missing better descriptions and additional character/plot development. @DeweysReadathon #readathon #wrapitup

Mollyanna Wow! Woohoo! I don‘t think I‘ll ever make the full 24. That‘s awesome 🎉🍾🎉 4y

I read this because I loved the cover, which is a common occurrence for me. 😀

It's a dark tale about a girl destined to save her village from the soul eaters who threaten it. I thought overall the story was just okay. The build-up of the beast was far better than learning what the beast actually was though.

First of all, beautiful cover (just putting that out there). Second of all, I'm not a huge fan of the synopsis on the inside cover. I don't know if it's just me (which it very well could be), but it sounded like a beauty and the Beast retelling when I read it... And this book was pretty far from it. This wasn't a bad book, just not my cup of tea. The double F's annoyed me (forest+this book=fforest) like why?
But not a bad book, just a so-so.

tournevis Not an expert on English grammar, but I was taught that in early Modern English, the doubling of a letter could denote emphasis or specificity; at the beginning of a word it could mean "the one and only of" something. Like when one writes IFF, meaning "if and only if". I may have been taught wrongly there. Perhaps then if means the one and only forest, or the ur-forest. Perhaps not. 5y
Jerlynn Oh ok, that would make a lot more sense, thank you:)) (edited) 5y

I enjoyed listening to the audiobook version of this book. I actually thought it was based on a real Welsh fairytale it was so deep & dark, but according to the author‘s website, it was completely original. This is a so-so right on the verge of a pick. Good, not great, and enjoyable ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really liked the book. But I think the title is so stupid!!! It actually is not a beauty and the beast retelling, as I deducted from the title.
Also, why was "forest" written "fforest" the whole time.... It was only annoying, not special...

Booksblanketsandahotbeverage Lol, I really liked this book, but totally agree with you on the fforest and the title. 6y
Kimberlone One of my biggest pet peeves in Fantasy/Sci Fi books is when normal words are spelled weird! It‘s one thing if it‘s a totally made up word but makes no sense if it‘s a normal English word that has been just had the spelling changed! 6y
DuckOfDoom @Kimberlone If they use an old spelling that's fine by me, but I always think in writing it would have been easier to write The Forest with a capital letter to show there is something about it. 6y

I was immediately drawn to this book because of the title and cover. Both so beautiful. A delightful story with some fairy tale vibes and reminiscent for me of red riding hood! There were one or two parts where it lagged a wee bit for me and I was craving more action, but overall well paced. I wanted a bit more mythos and backstory to world. But definitely a great read!

When only the children are spared in Alys‘s village by the soul eaters, they‘re sent to a neighboring village to live. When danger looms over the neighboring village its blamed on the children who are put in charge of keeping watch at night. They care not for the welfare of the children, so long as they remain safe. #PetSemetary (going off lyrics) #OctoberXFiles

First book of my #yearofmarvellousreading done and WHAT a book. It‘s an unbelievably creepy and atmospheric exploration of the way women have been hated and feared and the way that religious oppression and mob mentalities can be twisted against them. Alys is a fantastic main character and I was really rooting for her to win out despite everything being against her. Can not recommend enough!

My Year of Marvellous Reading

So I‘ve not been around here much this last year. I‘ve just started a Masters course and you might think the last thing I need is a new project. But now that I‘m doing a lot of more serious reading for uni I want to be able to read things that grab me straight away, and I want to document it here! Here‘s to a #yearofmarvellousreading and FINALLY getting to some of my most anticipated books.

This book just wasn't for me. The writing style felt really simple to me and I'm not a huge fan of the world the author build. There were a few things that drove me crazy (such as the “fforest“ written with double “f“) but overall the book was ok and I can see how others might really enjoy it.

This is how “forest“ is written in the entire book (so far) and it's driving me crazy. Why would anyone do this?!?

Grise Why indeed? Is it the only misspelled word? Could it be some kind of clue? 7y
buecherwurm @Grise I'm not too far into the book but it seems to be used to point out that this is no ordinary forest. However, I still would have prefered this to be done in a different way and not by a misspelled word. 7y

From the first page to the very last, I was at the edge of my seat dying for what happened next. I NEEDED to know.

It was creepy, wonderful, a blend of the village meets soul-sucking-vampires meets dryads meets crazy puritans and I loved every single minute of it.

"And she laughed."

I have finished THE BEAST IS AN ANIMAL by Peternelle Van Arsdale.
This book was very odd but interesting. The story flows and connects well. The main character weren't annoying in any way. It has a little bit of romance but it doesn't focus on it to much on. I enjoyed the bit of romance. It's like it's own fairy tale.
I honestly enjoyed it! It wasn't at all what I guessed or expected. [??? out of 5] #firstreadoftheyear

Okay~ Blurb time!
I'm suprised at how everything is different that what I expected. Granted I knew nothing, and I mean N-O-T-H-I-N-G about the story or where it was coming from. I liked the title and the cover. I assumed fairytale and romance and what I'm getting is fairytale, mystery and supernatural. I love it so far. It's showing some romance but not focusing fully on it like other books. #captivated #thebeastisananimal #peternellevanarsdale

Well, the beast is real. In the beginning it felt as if it were a demon but not just any being. The way the people talk about the Beast it feels like he's Satan/Lucifer. I believed him to be a cursed a being or just the fear of going out to the unknown, but it is real. I can quite picture him completely but just because The Beast is an Animal doesn't mean The Beast is evil. So far The People are Monsters.
