- VN Detective & thrillergids *****

The first book in the Jack Reacher series and the inspiration for the first episode of the popular television show. I read it for that reason. Decent pulp fiction.

After watching the 1st season of Reacher I was curious about this well-known series. The first book is a great thriller & the show did a very good job with the material. Good plot, interesting characters, clues and twists all made sense. Really that‘s all I‘d ask from a book like this. A great read to curl up with on a frigid day. I don‘t think I‘ll read the next book in the series, but I‘ll watch the new season of the show.

AnnR My husband likes the show on Prime Video, but my goodness every episode is violent. Are the books incredibly violent, too? 10mo
AvidReader25 @AnnR Definitely violent. I‘d say the show is a good representation of the book. 10mo
AnnR @AvidReader Thanks for the candid info. I think I'll skip the books then as the violence in the show really disturbs me. 😬 10mo
AvidReader25 @AnnR I‘d watched the show with my husband so I was prepared for it. I was curious about the books since the series is so wildly popular. I‘m not interested in reading more of it though. 10mo

Really good! Very suspenseful and surprisingly poignant. My version also had a wonderful forward by the author talking about how he got started writing the series, including the inspiration for the name Jack Reacher, which was funny and interesting.

Sneaking in some quiet reading time on the rooftop garden patio on my hotel. Such a lovely place to read such a violent book. Liking this better than the TV show so far, not that the show isn't good, but the book gives a lot more insight that can't be shown on TV.

Well, never thought I would have shingles at the age of 39, but here I am. Stress is a funny thing, it can bring out the worst in you.

On the plus side, I can take tmrw off work to rest, so I'm going to focus on my reading and maybe do some more audiocrafting.

The moral of the story, take time for yourself and don't let stress consume you.

KristiAhlers @aperfectmjk it may just depend on where your shingles have broken out. Mine started in the middle of my spine and wrapped around my left side to end in my left nipple. And it rode right along the bra line. My husband came up one day and just rubbed his hand down my back like he always does and it dropped me to the floor. I pray yours aren‘t as painful. (edited) 2y
aperfectmjk @KristiAhlers mine also started with pain in my spine, the rash is on my left side right along the bra line as well. It has not spread to the front side of my body, and I hope it doesn't. But, I do feel muscle tension in my chest, neck, and armpit area, which I think may be from my lymph node being swollen. 2y

I don‘t read this genre very often. I‘m glad I read this book. I plan to watch the series on Amazon Prime next. Jack Reacher is a fascinating character, who it seems can‘t be stopped. I‘d like to continue on with this series to see where it takes him. It deems that his character is the only content that will go from book to book. If you liked fast paced and action packed, this book is for you.

I‘ve never read a Jack Reacher book and I don‘t think I‘m about to start - but I did enjoy watching all 8(ish) hours of the tv show… I was just going to watch the first episode and then go about my Saturday but I watched it all - no regrets, I had popcorn and several pots of peppermint tea.

Ruthiella That‘s fair! There are lots of books that I can appreciate better when adapted for the screen. Also, the TV actor is like 2x the size of Tom Cruise. I know the books‘ reputation and why they cast Cruise in the movie version makes no sense. 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Ruthiella, I was the recipient of *many* TED talks on the subject of why Tom Cruise was wrong for Reacher by a friend who did love the books 😂 I love watching action stuff but it‘s not my go to genre for reading. 3y

A fun read with plenty of entertaining twists. Reacher made me roll my eyes a few times, but I didn‘t mind. I listened to the audiobook for at least 1/2 of this book, on my commutes. The audio is okay, narrated by Dick Hill. The narrator didn‘t do Southern accents well and in the high action parts near the end, he reminded me of a horse race announcer with his speed and intensity 😂 I‘ll read/listen further though. A nice break from heavier reads.

Solid 4 🌟 for me. This had a few twists and turns I wasn't expecting. The pace was quick and driving. The short sentence structure actually enhanced the Reacher character in my opinion. I did figure out one of the major players quickly but not what they were up to. Reacher is a solid character. This is a fun, take a break from the heavier reading, book. I'll be sprinkling more of these in my reading.

Another series that I had never read nor seen the movies, but I've been meaning to give it a go ever since Karin Slaughter did a crossover novella with Will Trent. I won't lie, my first impression was something like "why are these sentences so short and where are the commas?" but before I knew it, BOOM. I was hooked. Fast paced. Well plotted. Good thrills. I'm looking forward to the next one!

I‘m not a fan of Tom Cruise, he played Reacher in the film.No offense meant ,I just pictured Reacher as a burly version of the author , Lee Child!😃

The preview chapter means I'm done with the book!

A fine, if uncomplicated, crime novel where the hero is ultra-competent. Everything fits together. No false leads. Just lots and lots of plot.

suzie.reads I have read all the Reacher books and it's been a rocky relationship. I've just started enjoying them again and he is passing the writing over to his brother? Very strange! 5y
Andrew65 @suzie.reads That‘s what I thought. 5y
suzie.reads @Andrew65 it is shear greed. They don't want to write but want the money from the franchise. James Patterson is the same he barely writes any of his books anymore and it is really noticeable. Women's murder clubs past few books have been written solely by Maxine Paetro, they have been totally different and very poor. 5y
Birdsong28 It could bring a fresh perspective on the series and maybe he could be smiliar in his writing style so that it won't be too much of a change. 5y
Leftcoastzen Not happy.Glad to hear that some Littens enjoy Andrews style .I‘m so slow at the series that I have many to enjoy before I get through the original 24 5y
Andrew65 @suzie.reads I‘d agree and exactly what my wife said. Also have to agree about the recent Women‘s Murder Club Series Books. 5y
Andrew65 @Leftcoastzen Me too. Lee Child is relatively young to stop writing. Possibly lost his mojo! (edited) 5y
ljuliel I haven‘t read books by either of them. I don‘t recall ever hearing of an author passing the job on to a relative , although I have heard of relatives who also become authors , like Leif Enger, then brother Lin , Anne Rule and daughter Leslie . Then of course , Stephen King, almost his entire family writes, other than his daughter ? Wife, and both sons write. (edited) 5y
TiredLibrarian @Birdsong28 Agree with you & @EadieB that this could be a good thing. I've read the whole series (within 60 pages of the end of #24!) & while I love them, it seems like Child has had to "reach" to keep the series from getting stale - flashbacks, odd subplots, etc... If Andrew Grant can breathe new life into it while keeping what we love about Reacher, good for them both. I've read too many series where the author doesn't know when to hang it up. 5y
Andrew65 @TiredLibrarian Perhaps that might have been a better option, to retire the series. I‘ve yet to read the recent ones. 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I've not read any of the Reacher books. My hubby has read them all, and waits for them. Though hes been a bit disappointed in the last couple. And he says Cruise is NOT Jack Reacher at all! I'll be sure to tell him this! 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Tell him I stopped reading them for a while when they cast Tom Cruise. Ridiculous decision! They are good reads, although only read about 9. (edited) 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I think he was ready to stop reading them too, he was very disappointed in them casting him. 5y
gradcat @Andrew65 I agree! I‘m very surprised about this!! So shocked that he won‘t be writing Jack Reacher anymore. 😳 @Crazeedi He is right—my brother says the same thing—Cruise is not Reacher! I stopped reading them after about, what, about 14 or so? Maybe this will be a good thing—new blood—we shall see, @TiredLibrarian & @EadieB Strange timing, though, right after Amazon announces an upcoming televised version. Humpf. (edited) 5y
EadieB @gradcat His decision about Tom Cruise shows he made it all for the money as he thought Cruise would draw the people but I think it kind of backfired! @Andrew65 @Crazeedi (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I know the studios have the control but should have sorted this before finalised the deal and been prepared to walk away, as I do feel this really harmed the book series for many - me definitely included! @Crazeedi (edited) 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 if his brother doesn‘t do a good job with the writing, it will definitely be goodbye Jack! @Crazeedi @gradcat 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB As my wife said, he may do a better job! 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I agree with your wife but you know people are so critical if given the chance to criticize. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Mostly definitely, like to see people fall! 5y
gradcat @EadieB Did he have any say in the choice of actor? Most of the time, writers don‘t get that, so I didn‘t realize he had approval. I just figured Cruise bought the rights and put it out through his own production company. Oh, well, live and learn. Child always seemed so nice...you should never meet your heroes, right?! 😂🤣😂 Poor Jack may very well miss you, Eadie! @Andrew65 @Crazeedi — am I right? (edited) 5y

I almost never read #crimefiction, but I was sucked into this novel simply by reading the first paragraph. I had received this book as a donation for my Little Free Library, and I was just looking through this book. Eight chapters later, I think I know why Lee Child is such a popular author! 😃

Leftcoastzen I need to get back to this series, think I‘m on the 6th book🤔 5y
SqueakyChu @Leftcoastzen Do you like all the books? My husband read four of the series, but stopped midway in two of them, saying he lost interest in the stories. Should they be read in order? 5y
Leftcoastzen I like to read them in order , there was one of the five I didn‘t like as much , but I want to try to get to 6 soon. This is the first book in the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child. Fairly good, easy read but a bit dragged out in places and chunky at 524 pages (paperback edition). The story line is very clear throughout the book and it doesn't venture off of it on tangents. I cant wait to read the rest of the novels and learn more about Jack Reacher. I wouldn't say that it was a fast paced novel it is quite a slow book that gradually builds up the details needed for the ending.

This is the first Jack Reacher novel, and it shows. Not as polished as the later novels but it set up the Reacher character and works brilliantly. Found the first Jack Reacher book in the library app, and decided to see what the popularity is about. I'm finding it hard to adjust to the narrator. He reads in a drawl, a bit staccato, like a list. With stress on nouns and the final word like it's almost an exclamation. "I was Arrested in Eno's DINER. At 12 o'CLOCK. I was eating EGGS and drinking COFFEE. A late Breakfast, not Lunch. I was wet and Tired after a long Walk in heavy RAIN." ?
