It Devours!: A Welcome to Night Vale Novel
It Devours!: A Welcome to Night Vale Novel | Joseph Fink, Jeffrey Cranor
From the authors of the New York Times bestselling novel Welcome to Night Vale and the creators of the #1 international podcast of the same name, comes a mystery exploring the intersections of faith and science, the growing relationship between two young people who want desperately to trust each other, and the terrifying, toothy power of the Smiling God.Nilanjana Sikdar is an outsider to the town of Night Vale. Working for Carlos, the town's top scientist, she relies on fact and logic as her guiding principles. But all of that is put into question when Carlos gives her a special assignment investigating a mysterious rumbling in the desert wasteland outside of town. This investigation leads her to the Joyous Congregation of the Smiling God, and to Darryl, one of its most committed members. Caught between her beliefs in the ultimate power of science and her growing attraction to Darryl, she begins to suspect the Congregation is planning a ritual that could threaten the lives of everyone in town. Nilanjana and Darryl must search for common ground between their very different world views as they are faced with the Congregation's darkest and most terrible secret.

Have you ever lived in a quirky desert city full of odd and eccentric beings, invisible food, back-alley fights between scientists, and a cult that worships a diety that will eat you (and potentially the rest of the city) whole? Yea, me neither! But after reading a book about such a place, I would be down to at least visit. Such a fun read, very funny, weird and wonderful. It‘s another hit from the Night Vale realm and I suggest you read it.

Estherhasredhair Yes!!!! I love Night Vale!!!! 3mo
SB_92084 @Estherhasredhair such fun books! I love the weirdness and the humor. If you haven‘t read “The Faceless Old Woman Who Lives In Your House” I highly recommend it! It‘s a Night Vale book but very different. The first chapter of that book is beyond awesome!! 3mo
Estherhasredhair @SB_92084 fear not! I have read all of them except the episode transcript books (and even then, I‘m really thinking about it). 3mo

It Devours is a bit of an irreverent pick for the #DecemberSong challenge's 6th prompt, Oh Come All Ye Faithful. In this book, a religious group that worships a hungry God envokes said God to come devour the town of Nightvale. It's up to a determined scientist and a devotee who is dedicated to protecting his faith to figure out what is happening and find a way to stop it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book but I‘d be tentative to recommend it to others. It runs parallel to the main podcast and features a solid mix of new and old characters, and has a pretty compelling main lead in the scientist Nilanjana and the religious devout Daryll. They also have Carlos and explore his time in the other world from the podcast, which was interesting. However, people unfamiliar with the podcast wouldn‘t be able to just jump into it

Gnora As some who read the first Nightvale novel, THEN went to the podcast I agree with this assessment 100%. It‘s a cool universe and I like the parts of it the novels expand on and explore, but without the background the in-jokes can be a little much. 4y

I loved this audiobook read by none other than Cecil Baldwin and to be honest, I was better for it. Since I read the predecessor myself I knew that the voice is what really makes the book and Cecil reading this sold me on it in a way that the book might have wavered. A solid 4 ⭐

I was hoping to be able to finish my ebook (tagged), but he tuckered himself out playing that cat fishing game for cats. I don't want to risk waking the beast.

Whenever I'm on my tablet he paws at it wanting to play with it. I've created a monster.

Book 41 of the year, finished May 25, audio

I enjoyed this one a lot more than the first in the series.

It describes the relationship between a devout religious man and a scientist woman and how they together defeat The Smiling God. Or do they?

This hovered between a pick and so-so, but I ended up giving a pick because of Night Vale's overall entertaining weirdness. I think this would have worked better for me as an audiobook, read like the podcasts I've enjoyed before. 3 💥💥💥 out of 5

Man alive I love the WTNV folk. I enjoyed the first novel a little better, perhaps, but this one was delightful.
If you‘re unfamiliar, the pod cast is a fun, sweet, creepy fictional community radio program from a desert town that is never boring.
The drawing out of the ending is totally within the way the Night Vale world works but I feel they‘ve done it more elegantly in live shows and on the pod cast.

Third book down for #24B4Monday! I am extremely unlikely to make it anywhere near 24 hours, but at least this is motivating me to get some books finished.

I liked parts of this book: the Carlos parts. Especially the Cecil and Carlos parts. The rest… 🤷🏻‍♀️ Not really interesting or satisfying. I‘ll probably give the next Night Vale book, if there is one, a miss.

monalyisha Bummer! I enjoyed (listening to) the first one (on audio)! 6y
Clare-Dragonfly @monalyisha I switched to audio partway through. Even Cecil‘s dulcet tones couldn‘t save it for me 😅 But if you liked the first one, maybe you‘ll like this one, too! I thought the first was just okay. 6y
TieDyeDude Good to know. I've given up on the podcast, glad I didn't spend time on this book. 6y
Clare-Dragonfly @TieDyeDude Yeah, if you don‘t like the podcast, probably don‘t bother with the books. 6y
TieDyeDude @Clare-Dragonfly I liked it until recently. I began losing interest after episode 100 or so, stopped listening a couple months ago. The first book was very forgettable IMO. 6y

We don‘t have many plans this weekend, and I realized I‘ve only finished one book this month, so I think I will join in one of these readathons for the first time! I doubt I will manage #24B4Monday, but I can try. At least it may motivate me to listen to more of my audiobook.

BeansPage Motivation is key. That's why I do these readathons the last weekend of every month. That way we can finish up our monthly TBR stack 😉 6y

Nilanjana is a scientist who works in Carlos's lab. She winds up investigating a weird series of events around town where places and people appear to be swallowed by huge pits. It leads to the Church of the Smiling God where she begins a relationship with Daryll Ramirez. Soon she has to decide if he is on her side or up to something sinister. She also has to decide to save the town. Fun tale of the weird with some laugh out loud moments. #MountTBR

Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor are great narrators and this novel is a fun trip into the world of Night Vale. I love the little jokes that show that the world of Night Vale is not our own. But in the end, while the world is so unlike our own, the people in it are all too human. And that‘s a very interesting take on this world.
