Fast-paced Sci-Fi novel that has some Ready Player One vibes, but definitely is it's own beast. Emika Chen (hacker, gamer, bounty hunter) is a fun character to follow. I plan to start the sequel soon.

CatMS Loved Ready Player One, will need to check this one out. 8mo

A wild ride! I loved that we got to follow a female hacker through such vibrant world building. And it‘s non stop action from chapter 1. I went in not realizing that there‘s a sequel and was disappointed we didn‘t get more of a wrap up. But over all it was a fun read.

I'm struggling to read this month and I'm struggling to be okay with that. Sigh. I've only finished 2 books and I usually read about 7 each month. It's not that the books aren't good ... it's more a desire to be up and moving.

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Be gentle with yourself & listen to your body. I feel a bit bummed that last year I easily read more books but life is just more demanding right now. The books will be ready for you to pick them up when you can. Enjoy the movement because our bodies need that, too. 2y
Zamyah @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Thank you! I know it's not a bad thing to take a break but being a booklover is so much a part of my identity that it feels "wrong" to not be consuming books left and right. 2y

The tagged book I liked enough to read the sequel, which is the book pictured. Both were decent but reading the second one def made me see some holes in the plot and loose ends on the whole story. Also, it was a bit more focused on the romance, which is not quite my thing. Cool lil young sci-fi, but by the end of book 2 I was a bit sick of it.

This was a fun and easy read. The ending was a bit predictable but I really appreciated the unique world-building that is set in a not at all distant future.

I always have a hard time actually reading Sci Fi. Which is silly. I always enjoy it. Most of these have been on Mt. TBR for years! #NoShameReadathon22 is helping me get excited to read this genre more!

Space Opera - Lady Doctor Wyre
Hard Sci-Fi - Record of a Spaceborn Few (Wayfarers #3)
Steampunk - The Affair of the Mysterious Letter
Speculative Fiction - The City We Became (Great Cities #1)
Cyberpunk - Warcross (Warcross #1)

#NSR22 #Readathons

Nessavamusic Great list! I enjoyed Warcross 3y
the.bookish.valkyrie @Nessavamusic Thanks! I‘m pretty sure I will too! It‘s been languishing for years in my Audible library waiting for me to finally dust it off! 😅 3y

I am alone in thinking this book could totally happen someday? 😯

This was a really cool story. I've always loved the amount of detail that Marie Lu provides in her books, and this was no exception. It was fascinating to see what high tech gadgets could be like someday in the (maybe not so far?) future. A great action-packed read with a ton of twists and turns.

I‘ve never read this type of genre, and have never been into these types of books. Usually I read horror and mystery types but this time this book is just amazing! At first I was a bit confused and all but I just love how the story layout is like. I‘m not done the book yet but I‘m about to finish soon. I‘m excited to finish the book.

This book was super fun to read. I actually told myself I didn't care how late I stayed up, I was going to finish the book that night! I love the world building within the Warcross game. This is a near future society that feels like it could really happen within a few years. I love the structure of the tournament and the fact that the teams lived and trained together. There is a small romance, but overall this is a science fiction adventure story.

Twainy AGREED!! I liked the 2 Warcross & 4 Legend books plus The Kingdom of Back. Hmm that‘s all I‘ve read of hers so I guess I like her writing. 😁 Some are better than others but all were good to great! 4y

This was just as good as I remember it being the first time. I love the futuristic world this story is set in, all the technology and shifts in the world were so fascinating. Emika is also a badass, I love reading about strong female characters who are tied to no one but themselves, it was nice to see her progression from the start of the book to the end.

Shay1097 The supporting cast of characters were also super fun to read about, and I love, love, love stories where the main character gets to expand their family with the new friends they make along the way. I also loved the Warcross game aspect of this book, it was fun to get to read about a sci-fi video game that feels like it could be real one day! Overall this was really enjoyable and I can't wait to see how the second book plays out. 4y

For almost the entirety of this book I thought it should have been classified as a romace, but the ending made me see it differently. It was okay. I don't think it was amazing, but it wasn't bad either. I did find myself enjoying the story but I really wish there was more about the virtual reality and just a little bit more detail on the games. Other than that, it was an alright book. I will continue to the next one.

I was hoping to get these last two books completed before the end of the year, but they became my first completed books for 2021.
Warcross was a lot of fun and I‘m looking forward to continuing the series. Zero was obvious earlier than I would have liked but I did not see the reasoning behind his attacks. I really do enjoy books about virtual realty!
The Queen‘s Gambit was great but the chess moves were over my head.

This is the kind of book that makes me think. The one where I sit back and look at the world around us. A sci-fi novel where the world is obsessed with a fictional world and plays a game to escape reality. I feel like in our technology world, some of us are too sucked in to our technology. I ate this book up and finished in like 2 days because I couldn‘t put it down. Stay tuned for review of book #2

The world building in this book was honestly the best! It's so rare to find such an original book, with such a well written world. Set in Tokyo, which is one of my favourite places, we follow Emika who is such a badass with her hacking skills, rainbow hair and tattoos. I loved the plot and the twists, I didn't see any of them coming at all. I loved the romance and the characters. I absolutely loved this book, and have just ordered the 2nd.

Set in the future and in the world of virtual gaming, it was fun to read about the world years from now without it being pandemic/plague/apocalypse/war based ! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The story is interesting.
You might find it a bit predictable, since I guessed all the major plot twists correctly. But it is entertaining.

The only thing I truly hate is the romance. I mean why did Marie Lu had to write romance into this. That is the only thing that bothered me. It was really unbelievable.

First book of 2020, though I started in December. A fast paced read but predictable. I felt like I read this story several times already.

DogMomIrene Felt the same way. Plus the middle school kids who I handed this book to would come back with same feeling. I'm debating trying her other books, but I've heard they're all kind of so-so:( 5y

I had a lot of trouble getting into this one, which might say more about my current reading slump than the book!

It has a strong #socialmediafocus and warns about the dangers of having too much of a reliance on technology!

I loved Warcross, and I plan on continuing to the sequel right after! Warcross is a book about a girl who came from nothing, $13 in her bank account but a love for a game called Warcross, a virtual reality that changed the whole world, When the Warcross competitive teams compete Emika, the main character try‘s to pull of a stunt that could change her whole life. If you like books that have tons of action and videogames this book is for you! #2

I liked the gaming aspect of this book. That‘s not really something I do, so a little more insight into it was interesting. Of course, a teenage girl who is able to hack into systems that teams of trained professionals are unable to crack with one hand tied behind her back is just par for the course in the YA universe. I didn‘t see the twist coming, though, and it is an engaging story.

Nebklvr Are you planning to read the sequel? 5y

If you want a thrill ride (great action scenes) with young adults (geniuses, bounty hunters, extreme-world renown gamers) as they struggle to cope with their own issues whilst solving mysteries in the real and virtual worlds, read this fun book!
