Infomocracy: A Novel | Malka Older
Read Infomocracy, the first book in Malka Older's groundbreaking cyberpunk political thriller series The Centenal Cycle and the novel NPR called "Kinetic and gripping." The book The Huffington Post called "one of the greatest literary debuts in recent history" One of Kirkus' "Best Fiction of 2016" One of The Washington Post's "Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of 2016" One of Book Riot's "Best Books of 2016 So Far" It's been twenty years and two election cycles since Information, a powerful search engine monopoly, pioneered the switch from warring nation-states to global micro-democracy. The corporate coalition party Heritage has won the last two elections. With another election on the horizon, the Supermajority is in tight contention, and everything's on the line. With power comes corruption. For Ken, this is his chance to do right by the idealistic Policy1st party and get a steady job in the big leagues. For Domaine, the election represents another staging ground in his ongoing struggle against the pax democratica. For Mishima, a dangerous Information operative, the whole situation is a puzzle: how do you keep the wheels running on the biggest political experiment of all time, when so many have so much to gain? Infomocracy is Malka Older's debut novel. PRAISE FOR INFOMOCRACY A fast-paced, post-cyberpunk political thriller... If you always wanted to put The West Wing in a particle accelerator with Snow Crash to see what would happen, read this book. Max Gladstone, author of Last First Snow "Smart, ambitious, bursting with provocative extrapolations, Infomocracy is the big-data-big-ideas-techno-analytical-microdemoglobal-post-everything political thriller we've been waiting for." Ken Liu, author of The Grace of Kings "In the mid-21st century, your biggest threat isnt Artificial Intelligenceits other people. Yet the passionate, partisan, political and ultimately fallible men and women fighting for their beliefs are also Infomocracys greatest hope. An inspiring book about what we frail humans could still achieve, if we learn to work together." Karl Schroeder, author of Lockstep and the Virga saga At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Throwback to last night, when I ate coconut curry tofu while I read another chapter of INFOMOCRACY. I started the book earlier this month and decided to take a break when I realized I wasn‘t in the right mood for idea-centric SF. That was a good move, because now I‘m in the perfect mood for it! I hope I can scrounge some quality time with it tonight.

Presenting the four books I MUST get off La TBR in October. I chose INFOMOCRACY because I enjoyed Older‘s work on ORPHAN BLACK and THE ILLUSIONISTS because reading THE HUMMINGBIRD‘S DAUGHTER by Luis Alberto Urrea reminded me how much I like to wallow in thick historical novels.

TBH, I‘m not enthused about the last two. They‘re each the third book in a series where the second book was a huge disappointment. They get 50 pages to hook me.

Low-stakes near-future techno-thriller based on machinations between governments that run 100,000 person mini-states right before a decennial election. Ken works for one of them that is hoping to have a chance at the Supermajority (i.e., running the most mini-states). Mishima works for Information, the non-partisan technocratic organization that conducts elections & disseminates information. They team up to counter the bad guys & have sex.

kingrat Tried out bookly for tracking, which is used to generate this graphic. Page counts based on what's displayed on my Kobo. Since my eyesight is getting worse, I've enlarged the font size and thus, the page count. 5y

Getting some reading in at bedtime. Gotta be up early to watch soccer.

Infomocracy is about a future where governments rule areas with exactly 100000 people, and there's a few thousand parties that run. Doesn't seem like a 2nd place party gets a say in each "centenal" but i am not far enough in to grok the complete setup. There's some political chicanery afoot, but it's too early to tell what or to care much.

I enjoyed this, but I regret doing the audiobook. I think I would have preferred a physical copy more. I got lost in what was happening quite a few times, plus couldnt get my head around some of the concepts. I'll have to do a re-read - I think I'll get more out of it.

BookmarkTavern Honestly, it‘s not much easier reading it in print! I think this is a book that just needs a second reading, no matter what way you read it the first time! 😂 5y

If you are looking to learn about current view of politics, do not read this book. If you want a futuristic thriller where political parties (“charismatic” creepy old power vs policy based vs corporation driven vs etc.) vie for election on a global scale in a micro-democracy system (I would be tempted to move to the Hello Kitty centenal) and the independent company “protecting” the world‘s information, read this book.

Hey friends I really enjoyed this book, and I‘m looking for something similar to follow it up with. It was very much a political techno thriller slash sci fi type thing, and I‘ve never really read anything like it before. I thought I‘d see if there were any #recommendations about! #scifi #technothriller #recomendsday picture of newly shaven Georgia for attention grabbing 😅❤️ #dogsoflitsy

I enjoyed this significantly more than I expected. It takes at least the first 1/4 to get interesting but once she hooks you it‘s hard to put down. Set 20 years in the future, global politics has evolved into micro democracy- instead of national governments an individual government is elected every 10 years by groups of 100,000 citizens. Very #technopunk #futuristic and #political, but definitely fulfilled my need for some hard sci-fi. 💙🌇

I 100% giggled at this quote. Post massive earthquake in Japan, and of course the tea cart is still up and running. I‘m enjoying the novel so far, but it‘s definitely a slow march through the first quarter. It‘s dense with future politics and technologies and I find myself often going back and re reading paragraphs for make sure I followed right.

This is the perfect book for anyone who loves politics and high-concept SF, an intricately plotted story set 40 years in the future, when micro-democracy allows for thousands of choices in government and Information ensures all voters have access to objective data. A fascinating read in this time of alternative facts and rampant "narrative disorder." I already picked up the sequel and plan to read it very soon.

This was a really interesting read! Almost the entire world is a global micro-democracy where each group of 100k people vote for what government they want. This story picks up 20 years into this new way of governing and right before the next big election that could make-or-break this way of life. The beginning was a little slow, but as it goes on there‘s double-dealing with political intrigue and espionage thrown in, too, to keep you guessing!

Crash I read this last year and found it to be an interesting book. There is another by the same writer called Null States. I haven't gotten around to reading it yet but you might want to check it out. 7y
Merethebookgal @Crash Yes, I thought it was quite interesting as well. I checked on Goodreads, and this will be a trilogy with Null States as Book 2 and in 2018 the 3rd book will be released (called State Tectonics). 7y
Crash @Merethebookgal I'll have to keep an eye out for the third one. Thanks 😊 7y

Trying to deal with my apparent apocalypse blues by reading a bunch of post apocalyptic and neo-societal fiction. This one's a little close for comfort with election hacking and such but it does a good job of explaining the functionality of the new micro-democratic arrangement without info dumping or unrealistic expository dialog

This is probably the closest I'll ever be to him but I can't be the creepy stalker girl that doesn't respect privacy.
